Jason Segel, Emma Stone, and Charlie Day announced as 'SNL' hosts: All is forgiven!

This weekend’s installment of Saturday Night Live, the Anna Faris-hosted Halloween episode, was a disappointment to say the least. Aside from the Digital Short interviews with Drake and the Michigan State cable access send-up “J-Pop America Fun Time Now” providing the few actual laughs during the broadcast, it was an uneven clunker. In fact, the best moment of the night wasn’t even a sketch. It was when the TV screen announced that Charlie Day would be hosting the upcoming Nov. 5 episode with musical guests Maroon 5. Shouting! Possible nudity! This episode will have everything!

But, the excitement doesn’t stop there for fellow SNL fans like me who were worried about the lackluster Faris and Ben Stiller episodes following up the season opening knock-out one-two punches from hosts Alec Baldwin and Melissa McCarthy. In addition to the always-hilarious Day getting his first go at hosting, Emma Stone will return to Studio 8H after delivering one of last season’s best episodes. The Help and Crazy, Stupid, Love., star will be joined by Coldplay for the Nov. 12 episode, but I must admit, I’m most excited about the announcement that Jason Segel will finally be hosting SNL for the first time in his career. (I know, I know, PopWatchers. That’s no real surprise coming from me.) Not only will Segel have the spectacular Florence + the Machine as his musical accompaniment (I haven’t been able to stop listening to “Shake It Out” for the past week and a half), but the Nov. 19 episode will air just four days before The Muppets hits theaters, so a possible Kermit cameo seems like a totally feasible wish to have come true. (Well, probably more so than naked Adam Levine, anyway.)

Are you just as stoked about the back-to-back-back hosting gigs from Charlie Day, Emma Stone, and Jason Segel as I am, PopWatchers? Do you think they’ll be able to get the season back on track? Or are you more excited about rocking out to the upcoming musical guests than worrying about the hosts? Share in the comments section below!

Day, Stone, and Segel you mean. Edit your last paragraph.

    Sounds like a good choice.

    • Mas

still would have preferred the actor who plays Sheldon Cooper on Big Bang Theory to have been the host

      • A

He’s one of the most unfunny people on television, no thanks.

      • SheldonCooperForever

I agree with Mas…although I would caveat the statement with the acknowledgement that Jim Parsons (Sheldon Cooper) is hilarious on Big Bang, it’s hard to say how he would do on SNL. I predict it would be a smash hit or dismal failure…nothing in the middle.

“Big Bang Theory”: the high-rated sitcom that no one actually watches.

      • ohreallyfactor

why? why why why? he’s unfunny, the show is unfunny. i swear big bang theory is a joke that cbs is playing on us.

      • Greg

Good to know. So I can watch something else. He is one of the most unfunny people on earth. How do you people continue to get paychecks for this crapulence is beyond imagination.

  • Katherine

Jason has been absolutely outstanding these past few years on HIMYM. He deserves this! Excited to see Charlie Day and Emma Stone as well!

Agree, but this writer was way too hash on Anna Farris and her episode. There were some really funny moments and she did a nice job.
The worst parts came with the Republican debate looong sketch (which she wasn’t even in) and all impressions by Fred Armisan.

      • Todd

No, the Faris episode was not funny at all. It’s not her fault though. They just didn’t use her very well. It’s not like she’s another January Jones or anything.

  • orville

The Muppets cameo is even more likely considering that they (or at least Jim Henson creations) were semi-regulars on the show back in the 70s.

    • kate

Kermit made a cameo in Justin Timberlake’s first episode. Will Forte played the puppeteer but I’m not sure if he did the actual voice. He was just on Up All Night, I don’t see why he wouldn’t come back for a visit.

I think it was Elmo who was on the Jeff Bridges episode at Christmas… or maybe it was Grover. Anyway, yes, there used to be special SNL muppets on in the early years. The head writer at that time hated them. He said “I don’t write for felt.” ;) They phased them out after the first season, I believe.

  • Mandy P.

Well, this should truly be a test for the SNL writers. If they can’t do something with these 3 guests they have no hope. Maybe they will let Segel write some of his own stuff, he’s so funny!

    • Rachel Green

Agreed! He will probably bring a lot of good ideas to the show.

    • Stacie

      This.

  • LM

Can’t wait for the Emma Stone/Coldplay show!

  • Mike

Sounds like a great Nov. sweeps schedule. All terrific actors, now the hosts need to bring some celebrity special guests for thier hosting gigs….

  • Andrew

I’m glad Emma is coming back to SNL. She was a terrific host last year.

  • MrFord

I disagree, I liked the Stiller and Faris epsiode. They had funnier laughs than the McCarthy ep. Love McCarthy, but I just didn’t laugh during that episode. And the Baldwin ep wasn’t bad, just not his best outing. Personally Stiller and Faris eps put this season back on track. But I am excited for Day, Stone and Segel hosting! Whoa, that sounded like a law firm!

    • Bobby’s Robot

I thought the McCarthy episode was the strongest of the season by far.

  • K

I have been thinking that Segel needs to host. He is such an obvious choice that I can’t believe he hasn’t been asked yet.
Really excited for Charlie Day and Emma Stone too. I really hope the writers don’t let them down!!!

  • MiaS

Maybe Cookie Monster dreams will come true.
Hey Jason-can’t wait for the Muppets on SNL. Hint, hint.

    • Ian

I believe cookie monster already showed up last season in reference to this.

      • MiaS

You are right Ian- I need more coffee!

      • Squishmar

That’s who it was! I was trying to remember which muppet was on with Jeff Bridges. :D

  • Same

Has Neil Patrick Harris ever hosted SNL?

    • Bobby’s Robot

      yes

    • Bob

      Yes. January 2009.

  • Mike

That is a power trio of hilarious hosts if ya ask me.

Day and Sudekis have a ton of chemistry from the movies they have been in, and I expect them to really knock it out of the park.

  • no cars go

charlie day hosting = my first attempt at watching snl in awhile. i hope kristin wiig doesn’t ruin it.

    • Elizabeth

      Totally agree about Kristin Wiig.

    • Dark Defender

      ditto

  • Oprah

Excited as heck for Charlie D. and Jason Segel to host, but seriously EW? Emma Stone’s episode last year was AWFUL, and she was BARELY used. I’d much rather have someone like Kat Dennings host, since I could see her actually being GOOD.

  • Samantha

I will definitely watch these episodes but probably not others.

    • LOL

Glad Emma is coming back. Anne Hathaway needs to come back again, too. The show needs to get better music, though.
