The new Pop-Up Video isn’t just for music nostalgia anymore. A recent episode of the resurrected VH1 staple featured Green Day’s “21 Guns,” and the bubbled-up footnote that Billie Joe Armstrong once named Rob Pattinson as his top choice to play the lead in the cinematic adaption of the American Idiot musical proved enough to fire up the Internet today. To be accurate, it seems as if Armstrong told Spinner.com back in 2009 that Pattinson and Ellen Page were the perfect couple to play Christian and Gloria, the lead characters from their followup album, 21st Century Breakdown. “He’s a good actor. There’s still more to come with that kid,”he said.
But no matter. Two years later, Pattinson remains a pretty solid choice for either role. Not only is he a good physical match for Billie Joe/Johnny/Christian, but the Twilight star can actually do his own singing. Heck, he’s even karoaked with Hugh Jackman! With the Twilight saga soon coming to an end, his slate might even be clear for American Idiot, which is being developed by Tom Hanks’ Playtone for Universal.
Pattinson might have Armstrong’s blessing — or not — but I’m curious how Green Day fans would receive Pattinson in the role. Sure, both camps worship pale-faced heroes, but I assumed Green Day and Twilight fans traveled in different circles hemispheres. I like this so much, I’m afraid it won’t happen.
I dont know, on one hand I havent seen him in anything but Twilight and would like to see him in an movie thats not Twilight and see if he can actually act. On the other hand, since I only seen him in Twilight I think hes terrible and I wouldnt want him to screw up American Idiot
I have never seen Twilight but I read an article about him in GQ a few years ago and he was so charming that I picked up a couple of his movies at the library. He was surprisingly not awful. I think he could do this if he could break out of the Twilight shadow.

I can’t see him playing either the main kid from American Idiot, and he doesn’t look much like Billy Joe to me. Robert Pattinson does alright when he’s playing a British character, but I still don’t believe him as an American. Doing that accent seems to have a negative effect on his acting.

I’m fine with it. As long as the movie adaption is faithful and awesome(and, of course, should he get the lead, Pattinson do a great job in the role), I’ll be happy.
I think he and Ellen Page would be pure magic! Pllleeease make this happen!!! I think he will pleasantly surprise all you naysayers for sure! I am a Green Day fan as well as a Pattinson fan.
