Evangeline Lilly discusses learning elvish, breastfeeding on the set of 'The Hobbit'

For the rest of her natural life, Evangeline Lilly is going to have to answer questions about Lost. Did the numbers ever really matter? Why did Kate have to ruin everything? Lucky for her, those questions may subside for a while so that incessant queries about The Hobbit can take their place.

Lilly, who stars in this weekend’s robot-boxing movie Real Steel, fielded a few of them during her visit to The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on Monday. The actress told Leno that after Lost had wrapped, she’d intended to take time off, but she got an offer she couldn’t refuse. “Pete Jackson called and said, ‘Would you like to be an elf on The Hobbit?’ and I said ‘Yes, I really do. I really do want to do that,” Lilly recalled.

The new mom (early in the interview Lilly explains that she pulled a Claire, skipping the hospital entirely and having a natural home birth for her son) talked a little bit about her role as the new Woodland Elf Tauriel and breastfeeding her four-month old in full elvish attire. According to the star, her baby “freaked out” when he looked up an saw a mysterious, pointy-eared woman who resembled her. Lilly said that her partner (boyfriend Norman Kali) later joked, “You know his internal dialogue is, ‘Mom you wouldn’t believe what happened to me today.”

Check out the full interview below. But, if you don’t want to listen to Leno imply he can have sex for 30 hours (Good morning, PopWatchers!), skip to the three-minute mark to hear all talk of Tolkien. Watch:

After Lost began, I thought the gorgeous and talented Evangeline Lilly had a promising career ahead of her and would become a bigger star but she has done so little in the last seven years. I hope she’ll have a career renaissance with Real Steel and The Hobbit films and do more mainstream movies from now on. Good for her to keep landing such high profile roles. She deserves it. It’s an exceptional performance by her in Real Steel, just wonderful.

Reel Steel is going to suck

    • endo

Um, LOL, I don’t really think anyone’s going to see Real Steal for “exceptional performances.”

    • tcc

Reel Steel looks like a potential summer movie that turned out so bad that they dumped it in October, doubt it will be doing anything good or Lilly’s career.

    • Anthony

I was under the impression Evangeline Lilly was choosing not to work as often. I’m sure she gets scripts for all sorts of non-sense and she picks the projects she feels comfortable with

And I’m hearing nothing but glowing reviews for Real Steel. So there you go

    • Tess

Heh. She makes the robots look animated and capable of more real human emotion than she could ever convey onscreen.

She’s That Chick. The one who’s completely self-deluded about herself, her worth and the world. Didn’t she say a few years ago that the producers are so FRUSTRATED with her because she just refuses to be the big movie star they all know she could be? And that she used to pray to God to make her less beautiful because she couldn’t bear to be getting all that attention for how gorgeous she was? How about when she was lecturing about overpopulation and how selfish it is to have more than one child and how she’d never do that and adopt?

No wonder she sucks at acting. Meryl Streep, Denzel, Kate Winslet, any actor worth their salt… those are people with brains between their ears. I’m not saying they’re infallible, but they’re self-aware and mature enough to understand the world around them and capable of immersing themselves in a made-up world and take the viewers on a believable journey with them. Talentless hacks like Evangeline Lilly on the other hand like to think they’re just Too Good for Hollywood, constantly TALK about how they’re Too Good for Hollywood and then cash in on robot fighting aborted summer movies and nerd fests anyway.

  • mikeman

she’s super beautiful and will make an amazing elf, no doubt.

    • J.C.

She’ll definitely be much better than Liv Tyler who has to e at or near the top of the, “My daddy go be a job in movies even though I’m a terrible actor” lists.

  • Merson

Evangeline Lilly is lovely, gorgeous, sexy and beautiful. She’s amazing. That woman is incredible. There’s a lovely gentleness and sweetness to her.

  • Aubrey Price

Love Evangeline Lilly!! She deserves to be so happy and have lots of babies. Really lovely girl.
I’m a new mother myself and I highly recommend having children. My hips are bigger…my breasts are bigger. I’m loving it! I feel like more of a woman now. It definitely makes me feel so much sexier than ever before.

    • Meg

      But boys can’t have babies.

    • Jiji Moran

      Ugh! Too much sharing there.

She resembles Liv Tyler, who played Arwen in LOTR.

      • Houser78

Can’t recall any Tauriel in the Hobbit…will she be like Liv Tyler who’s character was not in the book?

      • aughra

Yes, Houser78, Arwen in the movie was a combination of Arwen, daughter of Elrond, and Glorfindel who, on his white horse, raced Frodo to Rivendell. Lily’s elf is another “made up” elf, so we have someone to care about from Tharanduil’s realm in Mirkwood, and to move the plot along.

    • Lara

I couldn’t agree more! I had a baby two months ago and I’m really surprised at how feminine, strong and beautiful I’ve been feeling ever since. BTW, I applaud Evangeline for choosing to breastfeed and talking about it publicly. It’s great publicity for the best thing you can do for your child.

    • BillR

I’m sorry Aubrey Price, but I don’t believe you. Send me pics of your breasts and hips to prove your statement.

    • Mike

It’s funny how you women are so happy that you got a bigger butt and stuff after having a baby. I can guarantee your husband is not happy with the new weight even though he won’t tell you so. Just sayin’…

      • starla

Wow..that is very rude! I am 105 lbs and my baby is 7 months old….what weight do you speak of?

      • Eric

What’s the matter Mike? Getting crushed a lot? LOL

      • Ace

Geez Mike, harsh! Maybe she was a more “stick figured” woman with a small chest and hips and is more feminine and shapely now. Good for you, Aubrey! Mike sounds like he’s single. If not, he should be! :P

      • Lara

Well, lets see if my husband is not really happy: I had a baby 2 months ago and lost all of the extra weight except for 5 pounds in 10 days. Today I’m 115 pounds and, believe me, those extra 5 I still have are all in the right places. Pregnancy and breastfeeding can make miracles for very slim women like myself!

      • Brian

Any man who regards his wife’s post-pregnancy weight with aesthetic distaste is a poor excuse for a man. Mike, if you get married and your wife has babies and then has trouble losing the baby weight….if you don’t recognize and celebrate the miraculous achievement and sacrifice her body provided to give life to your children, you can pretty much go f**k yourself. I don’t want to say you’ll make a crappy dad, but…well…if that’s where you place your priorities when it comes to having kids….sounds like the mark of a poor father. My wife has tons of stretch marks, which she feels self-conscious about because she hears from all sides that stretch marks are ugly. Personally, I think they are meaningful souvenirs of her strength and maternal sacrifice, and I love them and what they represent. I felt the same way about her baby weight while it lasted. Grow up, man.

      • lisa

lets hope Mike never has to endur the torture of womanly curves because for the sake of mankind,
        lets hope he never procreates

  • Chase

Uck!!! Hell no.. She sucked as Kate….

    • ihatescreennames

I’m with you–Kate had two expressions…constipated and confused.

      • shane

        No, THAT was Elizabeth Mitchell.
Expression 1: lip tremble, eyes well
Expression 2: lip purse, eyes well
What a horrible “actress” she is.

  • Alex

“But, if you don’t want to listen to Leno imply he can have sex for 30 hours…”

Hey everyone, look! Leno finally told a joke that was funny!

    • Nshi

Being on the receiving end for 30 hours doesn’t count.

      • Ace

That made me laugh! I will say when they said that about Leno, I think I threw up in my mouth a little!!!

  • Loni

Good for her for breastfeeding! It’s not easy to do at all, but so good for your baby! However, I’ve had three kids and I don’t know how she did a home birth, that would just terrify me. But maybe that’s because I’m married to a doctor so I’ve just heard about all that can go wrong. :)

  • tenley

Why do I have a feeling Leno missed the real story? There’s no way she got that job except through connections via her former Lost boyfriend (the guy who played Charlie) who was a hobbit in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

  • LOL

    Phillies lose in 4

  • Samantha

I wish you’d post a transcript or something. I refuse to watch Leno.

    • TK

Why? Because of the Conan thing? Just ask George Lopez how that worked for him.

  • Kim

    I want Lost back.

    • Ron

  • Zach

Why was sweaty, dirty jungle Kate so smoking hot and clean suit-wearing civilzation Kate did nothing for me?

    • lisa

My boyfriend says the same,& as a straight chick, I agree

  • kim

she will be a wonderful elf! but you lost me at the idea of Leno having sex for 30 hours. yeeeeech.

  • Anna

I love Evangeline Lilly! She seems so down to earth. I miss lost so mucn

  • Eric

Love EL! Can’t wait to see The Hobbit! Would be cool if they did a LOST movie. Maybe Hurley needs some help and brings them all back to the island, and the ghosts of Jack and others are telling him what they have to do.
