Melissa McCarthy's 'Saturday Night Live' pulls in impressive ratings: Is she your dream cast member?

A few weeks ago, PopWatch started an official petition to get Melissa McCarthy to co-host the 2012 Emmys alongside Amy Poehler after they stole the show with their ingenious Best Actress pageant bit and general wonderfulness. But it seems many of you want McCarthy to tackle a different high-profile gig first.

As it turns out, the Bridesmaids star was a big draw in her SNL debut over the weekend, delivering some impressive numbers. The show, which also welcomed fellow SNL first-timers Lady Antebellum, averaged a 5.2 rating/13 share in the metered-market households. While those aren’t exactly Betty White numbers, McCarthy pulled in more than last week’s season premiere (5.1 rating/13 share), which featured Alec Baldwin’s record-breaking 16th appearance as host.

Plenty of viewers, myself included, were impressed by McCarthy’s no-holds-barred approach to hosting. In fact, some of you in the comments section (don’t worry, not this “Comments Section”) suggested that the Mike & Molly actress should literally quit her day job and become a full-time SNL cast member. While that probably won’t happen any time soon (after all, she did just win an Emmy for her work on the CBS sitcom) McCarthy has officially joined the list of celebrities we’d love to see as regulars on the sketch show.

In addition to Baldwin and White, the exclusive club includes fellow ace hosts like Justin Timberlake, Christopher Walken, Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, Anne Hathaway, Jon Hamm, Steve Carell and Steve Martin. But is McCarthy now your ultimate dream SNL cast member (Hidden Valley Ranch enthusiast Linda or her gleefully demented Lawrence Welk Show sister, pictured above, could easily be recurring characters)? Where does she now rank on your list of must-return SNL guests? Did you tune in live or did you catch the episode Sunday after hearing all the buzz? Share in the comments section below.

I checked it out today at work. Hidden Valley needs to cut a check for her. Their stock just went through the roof. Also, I will never look at a balloon horse in the same way again.

I thought she was a one trick pony like Wiig. I guess people find skit after skit of loud, in your face, annoying women laughable. It’s like the nightly news with Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann in a loop.

      • MesoSoup

She’s quite talentred – loved her since Gilmore Girls.

  • Elizabeth

While she was funny, I wasn’t that crazy about a couple of the sketches, including the Hidden Valley Ranch one. Then again, I wish they would get Wiig off the show because all of her characters are one-dimensional and annoying, and she is on too much. I’m afraid the same would happen with McCarthy.

The Emmy people must not think the same as you on Wiig, she has been nominated two years in a row for Best Supp Actress in Comedy!

      • Elizabeth

No, the Emmy people don’t think the same as do. I realize there are a great many people (including the Academy) who feel differently than I do, but it doesn’t influence the fact that I think Wiig is a one-note hack. It’s a measure of my respect for the Academy that I don’t think they would take bribes for a nomination…

Not as sorry as I am putting an extraneous ‘e’ in your name.

I can always count on’s comments section to be so wonderfully, irrationally hostile.

    • Joe

Agreed! I can’t stand him as host and would never include him in the list of “must have” hosts. That “hurry on down to omelette ville” character has to be one of the dumbest, most annoying things in SNL history. Definitely fast forward through those.

    • Jethro

Agreed, Timberlake is very over-rated, and what’s with these movies he is starring in?

  • Tajah

SNL, hire her to save the show! Ms McCarthy did the impossible and made the sketches funny despite the writing. Amazing!

Plus, she actually ACTS. She didn’t need to read cue cards and knew her lines, which was fantastic and instantly noticeable. Absolutely professional.

  • shawshank

I could definitely enjoy a second round of Linda and Arlene. I think your list of reoccurring hosts is great, but would put Melissa McCarthy as the funniest woman to host SNL in a long time (excluding former cast members) Way better than Hathaway and even Emma Stone.

  • dm

She’s too good to be on SNL full time. I would love it if she hosted once a year or so.

  • Kelsey

I think I’m probably the only one who thinks that a lot of Melissa’s performance was improv — they just let her go DO with some basic instructions on where they wanted her characters to end up. Clearly SNL cast member need more training in improv cuz she blew them away (except for Kristen.) I think she’s brilliant and made sketches funny by sheer force of comic will.

  • Monty

I threw up in my mouth a little when i watched that Hidden Valley Ranch sketch…that much ranch dressing…

    Oh God…here it comes again

  • Frankie

I thought she was the funniest host on the show yet. she need to ditch “mike” and find her own show.

    • Eric

Seriously. That dude is not even in her orbit. She needs a top-notch comedy, like Tina Fey has “30 Rock” and Amy Poehler “Parks and Rec.”

  • R@mis

Why hasn’t Meryl Streep hosted yet? She’s sharp, funny, and a fantastic actress. Plus, she’s one of Hollywood’s biggest troupers, who commits 100 % to whatever gig she is doing.

    • christie

Meryl would kill it , loved her turn on the web based version of Lisa Kudrow’s Web Therapy. But, I really want to see a SNL sketch where Melissa McCarthy hits on Alec Baldwin AND Meryl Streep who play a conservative married who think they are seeing a regular role humdrum therapist but then have the therapist be a sex-crazed Melissa who go no-holds and flirts with both of them and Meryl’s character warms up to the flirting!

  • donner

I laughed thru the whole show. I thought she did a great job and seemed comfortable and willing to be silly. I would be excited to see her host again, knowing she’d bring that enthusiasm and comedy timing to the skits…

  • djt

i had to record it and watch it the next husband laughed out loud..he NEVER laughs out loud …thats how funny she was..i agree with everyone, she wasn’t reading cue cards, she was either prepared or it was improv, either way it was the best snl i have seen in many years…and i am old..

Melissa McCarthy better be the Top Contender for the Entertainer of the Year!

  • cate

I’d love to see Ty Burrell host. Please SNL sign him up! Oh and more: Emma Stone, Paul Rudd, Neil Patrick Harris and John Hamm.
