Has 'Millionaire Matchmaker' Patti Stanger reached her tipping point with her comments about gay men?

Anyone who’s ever seen an episode of The Millionaire Matchmaker knows self-proclaimed love guru Patti Stanger is an acquired taste akin to wasabi peas. She comes on strong and leaves your insides feelings raw. But Stanger’s frank, loud-mouthed, know-it-all persona has become her signature, the reason people watch her show in the first place. Who doesn’t want to see a paunchy, balding, middle-aged entrepreneur get put in his place for insisting that he will settle for nothing less than a Perfect 10? This past Sunday, however, Stanger crossed a line. Dishing out dating advice on Bravos’ Watch What Happens Live, she effectively characterized all gays as “queeny,” oral-sex-obsessed Grindr disciples incapable of monogamy, and even laughed in beloved host Andy Cohen’s face when he dared disagree with her perspective. Despite apologizing late yesterday, Stanger is still facing serious backlash. Is it possible she has gone from someone we love to hate to someone we just hate? READ FULL STORY »

Kevin Costner out of 'Django Unchained.' Whose career should Tarantino resurrect instead?

Any fan of Quentin Tarantino’s body of work knows that the guy loves to spice his movies with actors whose careers could really, really use a shot in the arm (metaphorically speaking). And it looked like for Tarantino’s next film — the period-slave-picture-slash-spaghetti-Western Django Unchained — he’d smiled upon the dimming star of a man who was once the Biggest Movie Star in the World: Kevin Costner. But then, yesterday, Costner dropped out of the film due to an over-crowded schedule (playing Pa Kent in Man of Steel may be enough of a career boost, I suppose).

The role was especially juicy, too: READ FULL STORY »

Matthew Morrison to Jonah Hill: 'Nobody messes with someone from musical theater!'

Filed under: TV and tagged: , ,

Matthew Morrison has a message for Jonah Hill, who belittled and challenged Glee‘s Mr. Schue last week on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, and it goes a little something like this: “I know Sue Sylvester, Sue Sylvester is a friend of mine. Jonah Hill, you’re no Sue Sylvester.”

Last night, Morrison sent Fallon a video response, answering Hill’s challenge with, “Nobody messes with someone from musical theater!” Watch below. READ FULL STORY »

The battle over the 'Jersey Shore' tax credit proves we are in the declining days of the American empire

Dr-situation

When it comes to the Battle for the Snooki Subsidy – the $420,000 tax credit that the New Jersey government originally granted to Jersey Shore, which has just been vetoed by Governor Chris Christie — there are no heroes. Not MTV, which made untold millions off the Shore franchise in the last year and a half, but still couldn’t resist a tasty government shakedown for a few measly hundred thousands of weak American dollars. Not the grandstanding politicians, whose mock outrage over such an inessential matter proves once again that the modern American political system is incapable of focusing on actual important things, like a Ritalin-starved fifth grader who keeps getting distracted by his own shoelaces. Not the American public, who care more about half a million dollars misspent on popular drunk idiots than about untold trillions misspent on soulless finance kingpins and endless wars.

In fact, the only people who come off well in all this are the cast members of Jersey Shore. We like to pretend that they are the barbarians at the gate, the horsemen of the apocalypse. But the apocalypse is already here; we are the barbarians. At least the Jersey Shore cast is having fun. They’re like the tannest, drunkest, stupidest violinists left on the Titanic, playing string-quartet interpretations of crap house music while the ship sinks away.

Alan Rickman returns to Broadway for 'Seminar' -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Severus Snape smiles and laughs, a lot — at least in this exclusive video of Alan Rickman and the cast of Theresa Rebeck’s Seminar meeting for the first time last Monday in New York’s West Village. Sure, it’s fun to see Rickman clowning around, but Seminar — and the footage — has other delights, like Tony nominee Lily Rabe and the beautiful Hettienne Park (The Intelligent Homosexual’s Guide…). The pair, plus Broadway newbies Hamish Linklater (The New Adventures of Old Christine) and Jerry O’Connell (The Defenders), play tortured students to Alan Rickman’s writing teacher in the comedy, which opens Nov. 20.  Check out the footage below. This Week on Stage: ‘Newsies’ opens in N.J.

Disney’s 1992 cult musical finally has an official stage version. And it’s good. Stage editor Thom Geier traveled all the way to Millburn, N.J., to check it out, while Tanner Stransky saw Theresa Rebeck’s latest in Los Angeles, and I hiked downtown for drag-legend Joey Arias’ return to New York City. Read the highlights below (click on the bolded titles for the full reviews).

Poor Behavior: “[It’s] a hoot,” says writer Tanner Stransky about Theresa Rebeck’s “hilariously farcical” new play about two married couples on a minibreak in the country. He gives the comedy an A, applauding Rebeck for yet “another character driven, relationship-heavy story.” READ FULL STORY »

Jay-Z’s dream to bring his New Jersey Nets to Brooklyn is on the verge of reality, and the rap mogul announced yesterday that he’ll personally open the Barclays Center with a concert (or two or three) when it opens next September. A Brooklyn native who’s owned a share of the Nets since 2004, Jay-Z intends to play an active role in the creation of the team’s new logo and uniforms, which will prominently feature their proud new neighborhood. Watch the New York Post‘s video clip of yesterday’s press conference below. READ FULL STORY »

'How I Met Your Mother': Did Victoria just make this a lot more complicated?

I think we can all agree that we sometimes become too invested in our television programs. That’s why we cry during season finales, scream at our TV, and in the case of last night’s How I Met Your Mother, literally fall out of your chair. Well, perhaps the latter just happened to me. In any case, let’s talk about that ending…

But to do that, we have to quickly recap.

What do you get when you mix Sweet Home Alabama with The OC and just a hint of Gilmore Girls? A fun new Monday night dramedy, Hart of Dixie.

Rachel Bilson stars as Dr. Zoe Hart, a fresh-out-of-med-school grad from NYC who has life all figured out. She gives a speech so inspiring at her graduation ceremony that a older gentleman, Dr. Harley Wilkes, invites her to come work at his practice in Blue Bell, Alabama. She passes, but four years later, after finding out she won’t be a heart surgeon in NYC until she sees patients as “People to help, not puzzles to solve,” Dr. Hart has a change of heart (See what I did there?) and decides to become a general practitioner for a year. She takes Dr. Wilkes up on his continued offers to move to Alabama and work for him. Will she learn lessons of life and love in the good ol’ South? Bet on it. READ FULL STORY »

'2 Broke Girls': It had a decent pilot. Is it becoming a good series?

2-broke-girls

Last week, Michael Patrick King and Whitney Cummings’ sitcom 2 Broke Girls got off to a bumpy but promising start: The chemistry between Max (Kat Dennings) and Caroline (Beth Behrs) was strong, but many of the jokes pertaining to city life missed the mark. The premiere fit nicely into the good-for-a-pilot category, but the important second episode, which doesn’t have the excuse of being the first, had to be better. Was it? READ FULL STORY »
