'Project Runway': Best stinkface of the night?

Project Runway consistently serves up some of the most vile/awesome stinkfaces on television. Last night’s episode (read my full recap here), which had the contestants designing their own fabric and putting on their own fashion shows, was no exception. Vote below for the week’s best.

Guest judge Rose Byrne (bottom left) looked like either Jennifer Garner or Keira Knightley the whole time (depending on the stinkface).

'Rescue Me' post-mortem: A look back at a show unafraid to confront the personal cost of 9/11

Categories: Rescue Me, Television

In the opening moments of last night’s series finale of Rescue Me, it looked like we were going to get exactly the sort of solemn, reflective experience that we’re going to want (or for some, need) when the ten year anniversary of 9/11 comes this Sunday. We saw the all too familiar images of flags draped over coffins and grieving family members, and listened while an embattled co-worker tried to properly eulogize his fallen friends. It was a poignant reminder of what most of us saw on TV ten years ago, and it set us up for an 80 minute summary on exactly how much we’d lost.

But then Tommy Gavin woke up, because Rescue Me has never been that type of show. Yes, it’s about 9/11. The unspeakable pain that resulted from those events may be dulled by time for many of us, but for 62 Truck, and particularly Denis Leary’s Gavin, it’s going to be there every day. But the moments that made the show so special during its seven year run were never the (abundant) tearful funerals or even the frequently spectacular firefighting sequences. At its core, Rescue Me was about how the survivors of these catastrophes, ranging from 9/11 to everyday warehouse fires, picked up the pieces and went back to work in their aftermath. 'Big Brother': Talk about tonight's eviction!

big_brother_2

Think Adam is the worst player in Big Brother history? Well, sorry! He won’t be going home tonight! The man, who attacked the last Head of Household competition like it was a Beggin’ Strip, now has the power to announce the two nominees for eviction. But the real power goes to whoever wins the Power of Veto tonight — who will they choose to go with them to the final three? The vets, as always, seem to have the advantage, since Jordan and Rachel are so tied together, and Adam only exists to lap up their trail of fame. But, should Porsche win the veto — well, then things could get interesting, folks.

Come here tonight during the episode to comment on the final four, and be sure to stop by later tonight for my full Big Brother recap. Otev demands it! UPDATE: We have another evicted houseguest! Click the jump to find out who left the house! READ FULL STORY »

'South Park' creators crash NYU course, want students to respect their authoritah -- VIDEO

Man, college kids are so lucky these days. The most interesting thing to ever happen to me back in school was when I accidentally robo-tripped during a Faulkner discussion section when I had the flu. (Absalom, Absalawesome!) But now Hollywood’s most talented are crashing college courses. At least, South Park‘s Matt Stone and Trey Parker are at NYU. Currently circling the Interwebs is a video (embedded below) of the writing duo walking in on a writing class at the university. They taught the students that the best South Park episodes go something like, “This happens and therefore this happens, but this happens, therefore this happens.” Seriously, it’s actually pretty interesting! Of course, the lesson would have been better had it been delivered by Mr. Mackey, m’kay? READ FULL STORY »

Could the REAL Gumby have robbed a 7-Eleven? (POLL)

Some weirdo in a Gumby costume tried to rob a 7-Eleven in San Diego. What a world, huh? After the jump, you can watch the video of him failing miserably and even donating 27 cents to the scene of this crime against everyone’s childhood after fumbling (presumably for a weapon).

I wonder if it makes me a terrible person that the things I’m most disappointed about are the complete absence of a Pokey suit for Gumby’s sidekick and the way Gumby’s costume is just split wide open in the back, hospital gown-style. Get it together, G. Commit to the costume or commit to the crime. Even the real Gumby wouldn’t have half-assed this so badly. READ FULL STORY »

'A Prophet' director lands Marion Cotillard for follow-up

Following up 2009′s instant classic, the brutal French prison film, A Prophet, was never going to be an easy task for director and co-writer Jacques Audiard, but casting Marion Cotillard as the lead should definitely help. According to Variety, the Academy Award-winning actress (La Vie en Rose) will star in Rust and Bones, an adaptation of Craig Davidson’s collection of eight short stories, which range in topics from a married couple that dabbles in dog fighting to a man losing a leg to a killer whale.

The book’s dark and certainly twisted subject matters are nothing new for Audiard and Thomas Bidegain, the duo behind A Prophet‘s script. (Anyone who remembers the razor blade scene from their last movie can attest to that.) Considering the unanimous praise critics heaped onto A Prophet, the reteaming of Audiard and Bidegain surely shoots Rust and Bones high up the list of movies to look forward to, and adding Cotillard only heightens the anticipation. Budgeted at a reported $22 million (a relatively large amount for a French film), Rust and Bones is sure to be one of the bigger movies coming out of Europe next year.

It has yet to be announced whether the adaption of Rust and Bones will be a narrative woven together with elements from the collection’s different tales, like how Paul Haggis consolidated F.X. Toole’s Rope Burns into Million Dollar Baby, or a more literal translation with separate stories like Stephen King’s Creepshow. Creating a single story from Davidson’s collection might be the more difficult of the two possibilities, since the book covers so varied and odd territory. You could end up with a married couple of dog fighters who lose their legs in a tragic encounter with an orca whale.

I would totally see that!

Is Adam the worst player in 'Big Brother' history?

Categories: Big Brother
big-brother

This season of Big Brother has seen its share of tragedy. Daniele tried to prove she could win the game without her father, BB legend Evel Dick… but the game proved her wrong. Jeff had a clear route to victory with an alliance that loved him… until one of his closest friends, Shelly, stabbed him in the back. You could almost look at this season as a portrait of generational conflict: The new players had big plans to sabotage the all-stars, but the Newbies’ tendency to betray each other (and occasionally just make incredibly stupid gameplay moves) gave the Veterans a shockingly smooth ride. But with only three episodes left in the season, viewers are mainly focusing on the most tragic contestant of all: Adam, the man who reached the Final Four despite the fact that he has done absolutely nothing all summer. Jonathan Taylor Thomas (nay, JTT) turns 30 today!

As any woman in her mid-to-late twenties can attest, Jonathan Taylor Thomas, or JTT as he was known around the Teen Bop/Bop/Tiger Beat/Tiger Bop/Tiger Teens Beep Bop Ba Doop community, was a big deal growing up. You were either so entirely obsessed with the Home Improvement dreamboat that it was hard to tell where the JTT posters hanging in your bedroom ended and your actual wall paper began, or you had a best friend who did. (I was of the latter category. And as a true testament to how much I love my best friend, I actually accompanied her to see Wild America and Man of the House at the movies. After our parents dropped us off, of course.) READ FULL STORY »

Ryan Gosling on breaking up that street fight: 'Then the guy from 'The Notebook' shows up and makes it weirder'

Ryan-Gosling

Ever since Ryan Gosling moved to New York City, the streets have felt much sexier and a little bit safer, thanks in part to his intervening when an apparent art theft fight broke out in downtown Manhattan last month. (Sorry, Canada, but we’re never giving him back!)

When a very enthusiastic citizen caught the whole thing on camera and the moment, in which Gosling broke up the scuffle with the help of his very, very nice arms, went viral instantly. While the world swooned, it turns out the Drive star was kind of embarrassed by the whole thing. MTV News recently asked Gosling about his heroic efforts, and the actor explained what really went down and why the whole thing sort of bummed him out. READ FULL STORY »
