Just as Broadway stars did 10 years ago, theater legends Joel Grey, Bebe Neuwirth and others gathered this afternoon in Times Square to mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and perform once again the Kander and Ebb song, “New York, New York.”

Introduced by Grey, the performance featured the casts of Book of Mormon and Billy Elliott, as well as celebs such as former American Idol judge Kara DioGuardi. Gavin Lodge, a performer with Priscilla: Queen of the Desert said, “It’s an honor to be here today. Singing ‘New York, New York’ in Times Square — it’s iconic.”  READ FULL STORY »

Ali Lohan, 17, has decided to age gracefully

So many “real” housewives and older (26 and up) starlets are defying the very laws of nature in this brave new world we’re living in. A little lift here, a slight tuck there, and before you know it, you’re popping somas and looking like a creature from the murky inner depths of the Bravo network. It’s usually unattractive, and it’s an undeniably negative trend that is wreaking emotional havoc on the impressionable young women of my generation.

This is why I was delighted to learn that 17-year-old Ali Lohan has defied the defiers by opting to age gracefully. Of all things! A rep for this brave young woman, who was recently signed to a modeling agency, denied allegations that she went under the knife after a new photo sparked concern and media frenzy.  READ FULL STORY »

'Project Runway': Nine (!) finalists show at New York Fashion Week

Project-Runway

Project Runway filmed its finale show at New York’s Spring 2012 Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week today — and in order to avoid spoiling the rest of the season, all nine designers who are still in the running in TV time got to show their lines. Looks like fashion and costume designer L’Wren Scott (pictured, left) will join Nina Garcia, stinkface-y Michael Kors, and Heidi Klum on the judging panel for the season 9 finale.

You can check out all of the collections here. Some observations: Viktor kept up Team Chaos’ “Rorschach tests for eveningwear” theme from this week’s episode with his collection, Anya went with a bunch of flowy, wearable prints (all of which I want to own) (agggh! except this!), and Olivier’s models all look bored and sad. My favorite piece of all might be this metallic number from Laura, but I think I like Anthony Ryan’s just-colorful-enough collection the best overall.

See anything you like?

'Contagion' cast: Just how many Oscar-nominated actors does it have?

Contagion-02

Despite what you have seen in the trailers, director Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion is really the Valentine’s Day of global pandemic thrillers. I’m joking, of course. But just as last year’s romantic-comedy invited a gaggle of beautiful Hollywood stars, including five Oscar nominees, to fumble for the glory of love, Contagion features eight actors in its cast who’ve been nominated by the Academy: Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, John Hawkes, Elliott Gould, Jude Law, and Laurence Fishburne. While not unprecedented — Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 also boasted eight performers who’ve been so honored by their industry — it’s a mighty deep pool of talent. (Mind you, that’s not even counting the likes of Jennifer Ehle and Bryan Cranston, who also have roles.)

But while Valentine’s Day and the upcoming New Year’s Evefive eight Oscar-nominated thesps — rely on stunt casting and Harry Potter is all about arming prestigious Brits with mighty wands, Contagion appears to be a uniquely collaborative superstar effort. Credit Soderbergh, who specializes in sprawling, multi-layered storytelling that lures serious actors and Hollywood stars to even minor supporting roles (See: Traffic, Out of Sight, Ocean’s Eleven). Or maybe Soderbergh simply tells his actor friends in each case that this movie is really really really going to be his last movie before he retires.

Can you think of a past movie that can give Contagion‘s cast a run for its money?

Why are videogame sales falling?

Categories: Videogames
Deus-Ex-Human-Revolution

The videogame industry has, for over a decade, been a rare portrait of fabulous success in a changing media era. The music industry imploded in the mp3 era. The TV industry has weathered a relentless array of storms: splintering audiences, DVRs that destroy ad revenue, the creeping menace of Torrent sites. The movie industry just had a record box office summer, but ever-declining ticket sales and the erosion of 3-D profits makes Hollywood’s outlook look grim. By comparison, the videogame industry looked ridiculously robust. Just last November, Call of Duty: Black Ops became the fastest-selling… well, thing in pop culture history, grossing $360 million in one day. But this summer, the videogame industry has seen a notable drop in game sales. READ FULL STORY »

As mind-boggling as Fringe can be, devoted fans of the Fox TV series probably have no need for a refresher course about the show’s now-elaborate mythology. Yet “Past + Present + Future” – a new series of recap videos that launches today at Fox.com – is worth checking out for longtime viewers (and is a must for newbies curious to check out the sci-fi drama in the wake of its acclaimed third season), especially with Dr. Walter Bishop himself doing the narration. The first installment provides a big picture overview of the series. The second installment – called “A Tragic Past” – begins the deep dive exploration of the saga. READ FULL STORY »

Jon Gosselin comes to grips with Reality, resembles rational human being

Jon Gosselin: Unlikely voice of reason?

It’s hard to believe the idea that Gosselin, the former reality-star-in-the-throes-of-a-midlife crisis and unofficial Ed Hardy spokesman, could be someone we’d actually have to listen to again, let alone agree with, but here we are, PopWatchers. Gosselin recently sat down (in what appears to be the waiting room of a dentist or dermatology office) with RumorFix.com to share his thoughts on his ex-wife’s determination to keep herself — and their kids — in the spotlight for financial reasons, as their recently-canceled show Kate Plus 8 draws to an end.

Now, brace yourselves, it all sounds entirely logical and seems kind of sincere. Michael Lohan, your former douchey protege hath betrayed you! Seriously this guy just said these things:

“Things will work out the way they should work out. Obviously there are families out there that have several kids. People work normal jobs. And things work out.”

“To rely on reality television… that’s a misnomer. Reality television is not a career. Get back to normal life, simple life, provide for your family.”

“I have my kids, I have my custody, I pay child support … I don’t have a farm on 24 acres… and the kids seem to have a good time at my house.” (Maybe he let them eat their pizza without guilt and berating? So there, Steve the Security Guard!) READ FULL STORY »

Michael J. Fox shows off 'Back to the Future' Nikes, discusses Charlie Sheen on 'Letterman'

While we’re all still waiting patiently for our hoverboards, (just four more years, PopWatchers!) Michael J. Fox brought the next best thing to his visit to The Late Show with David Letterman on Thursday night: The new Nike MAGs, a line of Back to the Future Part II-inspired shoes. Fox showed off the kicks, which are almost an exact replica of the ones worn by Marty McFly himself in the 1989 movie. (Sadly there’s no power laces, but they do light up.) The actor explained that the limited edition shoes (there’s only 1,500 of them) will be auctioned off on Nike’s eBay site and that the proceeds will go to his Parkinson’s research foundation. As Fox put it, the coveted shoes will go to three groups of “people with major joneses”: Sneakerheads, Back to the Future fanatics (who Fox joked are, “Out of their minds… in a good way”), and the Parkinson’s community that want to help advance research. Better yet, Fox revealed that Google co-founder Sergey Brin will match up to $50 million. Watch the moment below: READ FULL STORY »

Bus, do your stuff! A tribute to 'The Magic School Bus'

magic-school-bus

Seatbelts, everyone! When I was in elementary school, I used to long for the days when we’d pause our typical classwork to watch some type of “educational” programming. (Thank you, PBS, for those breaks from learning my multiplication tables. Twelves were hard!) And easily my favorite of these educational shows — perhaps only second to Reading Rainbow — was The Magic School Bus. I never much cared for science in school, but cram basic science principles into a TV show and wrap them with a super catchy theme song sung by the one and only Little Richard? Sold! Did you see the 'Two and a Half Men' Top 10 list on 'Letterman'? Tell us what you thought!

charlie-sheen-lying-down

Tonight’s Late Show with David Letterman featured a “Top 10 Reasons To Watch the New Season of Two and a Half Men” list presented by new star Ashton Kutcher alongside series originals Jon Cryer and Angus T. Jones. Before the stars’ appearance, Letterman took the opportunity to let loose on He Who Shall Be Named Over and Over and Over Again. ”This [season premiere] is going to be huge thanks to Charlie Sheen,” Letterman snarked. “I mean, he did all the heavy lifting on this one, boy.” Watch the video after the jump.
