Michelle Williams' Marilyn Monroe transformation in 'Vogue': Itching to see 'My Week with Marilyn' now?

Categories: Movies

She’s co-starred with Ryan Gosling and has grown into one of the most acclaimed actresses in the industry, but there’s yet another reason to feel jealous of Michelle Williams. While filming Nov. 4′s My Week With Marilyn — which centers on Marilyn Monroe’s time filming 1957′s The Prince and the Showgirl — Williams attempted to make her body more curvy, but, simply, just could not gain the weight. “Ultimately, it went right to my face,” she told Vogue in a cover story by Adam Green, shot by Annie Leibovitz. “So at some point it became a question of, Do I want my face to look like Marilyn Monroe’s or my hips?”

Eventually, Williams decided to use padding to bolster her figure, but, based on Vogue‘s piece, it seems her transformation into Monroe in the film is still all natural. Though many of you balked at the first photos of Williams as Monroe, the actress’ immersion into the character is impressive (she read plenty of books, watched movies, and listened to music to become Monroe), and her co-stars are telling folks to expect a spot-on performance. This Week on Stage: The Broadway season goes into full swing with ‘Follies’

The fall’s spate of big Broadway openings began this week with the official New York City debut of the D.C. transfer of Stephen Sondheim’s Follies. Our critics saw that musical revival, plus three off-Broadway works. Here’s how they fared.

Cymbeline: The Blue-grass infused production of the Shakespeare romance returned to off-Broadway last week, and earned an A- from EW correspondent Keith Staskiewicz. “If you thought that Shakespeare and full-on foot-stamping, washboard-scratching bluegrass would go together about as well as peanut butter and motor oil,” Staskiewicz writes, “you’re wrong.”  READ FULL STORY »

'Freakazoid!' found a bowl, good for him!

Freakazoid

If Animaniacs was the Citizen Kane of 1990s cartoons, Freakazoid! would have to be The Magnificent Ambersons — Orson Welles’ impressive but somewhat neglected follow-up. Whereas Animaniacs was a huge success that ran for a total of 99 episodes, Freakazoid! lasted a mere 24 episodes. Only years later did the eccentric superhero show become something of a cult treasure, in part due to Cartoon Network reruns that aired from 1997 to 2003. READ FULL STORY »

The 2011 Miss Universe Pageant: 10 Awkward Utterances During Swimsuit Competition

Congratulations to Leila Lopes from Angola, who was crowned Miss Universe 2011 in last night’s 60th anniversary competition in Sao Paulo, Brazil!

I had every intention of compiling 10 Adorable Andy Cohen Faces for this post (he hosted along with Today anchor Natalie Morales). But as soon as the bikini catwalk started, I knew that the standout moments of this major television event were, instead, the 10 Most Awkward Swimsuit Competition Utterances — made by the well-intentioned but ohhhhhhh so corny skybox commentators Jeannie Mai and Shandi Finnessey. Body shots for everyone and my official ranking here: READ FULL STORY »

Chris Harrison blogs the 'Bachelor Pad' season finale

chris-harrison

Before we jump into the finale of Bachelor Pad I would be remiss if I didn’t take a moment to honor the anniversary our country recognized this weekend. I hope every one of you took an extra moment to hug and say I love you to those closest to you as we marked the tenth anniversary of 9/11. It is my hope that we will always remember and let this moment in our history always let us keep perspective on what’s truly important in our lives.

Once again, like our premiere, the finale took up all three hours of prime time on ABC. The first hour took the final four couples to Las Vegas. One thing we really made an effort to do this season is step up the challenges, especially towards the end of the show when they become so important. In my opinion this challenge was more than worthy of being our final competition. The contestants were extremely excited when I told them we were off to Vegas for our final challenge, but they had no idea what was in store for them. READ FULL STORY »

'Bachelor Pad' season finale: 'Really? Here is where I find out?'

Well rose lovers, were we not entertained? SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t finished watching tonight’s epic three-hour Bachelor Pad finale. If you have, you’re probably still hoarse from yelling at your TV after Holly and the Pad producers left poor Mike Stagliano bruised, battered, and broken hearted. (Okay, maybe I’m the only one who was yelling.) Of course, tonight we also crowned the “winners” — and thank GOD their names did not rhyme with Stacey and Brianna. Did the right team take home the money? Did Ella really need that new nose? Did Team Bachelor go a little too heavy on the flat-iron with Ben’s hair? So many pressing questions! Stay tuned for my full TV recap later tonight (UPDATE: Click for Kristen Baldwin’s full Bachelor Pad finale recap and Chris Harrison’s exclusive Bachelor Pad blog), but in the meantime, post your thoughts about tonight’s Bachelor Pad finale below. Farewell, rose lovers! Meet you back here in 2012!

If there’s one ongoing theme in the comments section of this website (besides some of you guys being able to get some amazing deals on XBox), it’s that critics have no idea what they’re talking about and you’re going to see a movie with or without their stupid opinion. But, every now and then, the clouds part, the battle ceases and critic and moviegoer can come together to collectively agree, “Yeesh! That movie is terrible!”

That movie this week was the, uh, comedy(?) Bucky Larson: Born to Be a Star, which earned the rare jewel of a 0 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes. READ FULL STORY »

Madonna makes a silent film with hydrangeas. It doesn't end well for one of them. -- VIDEO

If you can’t wait much longer for the release of The Artist and/or you love the bizarre, ongoing Madonna vs. hydrangeas drama, then, boy is this video is for you!

While Madonna’s rep all but shot down any floral enthusiast’s hopes that Madge would apologize for her hydrangea hate last week (“She’s entitled to like any flower she wants and she didn’t want to hurt the feeling of the hydrangeas of the world”), the singer/actress/writer/director/producer took matters into her own hands and made a video, a silent short film to be precise, about the whole thing.

In the clip, Madonna caresses an arrangements of her once former foe and apologizes, “You have no idea how many nights I have lost thinking how I hurt you. Words cannot express how sorry I am. To think I may have caused you pain.” READ FULL STORY »

'SpongeBob SquarePants' destroys kids' attention spans, says Science. Maybe it just makes them smarter.

Breaking news from 1999: Scientists have discovered that SpongeBob SquarePants — a well-dressed undersea schizophrenic who works as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab — is bad for your children. So say a group of well-trained researchers at the University of Virginia, who published their findings in the journal Pediatrics. The study measured “executive function” — the ability to stay on one task without being distracted — in preschool-aged children.

The study divided the kids into three groups. One group watched a nine-minute clip of SpongeBob SquarePants; one group watched a nine-minute clip of Caillou, a show that is the polar opposite of SpongeBob in every way (slow-moving, airs on PBS, made in Canada); and one group spent nine minutes drawing pictures. In tests conducted afterwards, the latter two groups had equally fine “executive function.” The SpongeBob group’s performance was notably worse. So now we have scientific proof: Watching PBS is exactly as much fun as not watching television. READ FULL STORY »
