'Private Practice' season premiere: Heart attack -- or attack on our hearts?

Private-Practice

Well, wasn’t that a rather deceptive way to open the new season of Private Practice? All summer, we fans have been wondering what, exactly, was going to happen to Pete — who suffered a heart attack in the last few seconds of May’s season finale — when the show revved back up this fall. So, naturally, Practice didn’t make us wait long and opened just minutes after the aforementioned medical emergency: Pete was still laboring on the floor, post attack. Stressful!

Not too much later, Sam was called into the hospital to help out Charlotte with a patient. They were pumping a chest, doing all they could, Sam was distraught, until Charlotte told him that they had to call it. The death, that is. Time: 10:17. Only — and as the whole thing was playing out, it became pretty clear what was going to happen — Pete wasn’t the dead body on the table. It wasn’t until the camera finally panned to the guy — a total unknown, who, frankly, we don’t care about — that we saw the patient’s true identity. I said it already, but: deception!

'The Big Bang Theory': Amy Farrah Fowler's top 10 moments

When discussing Thursday night’s new episode of The Big Bang Theory, I could explore the growing friction between Bernadette and Howard as the betrothed couple navigate whether their wedded bliss will be spent under the caustic and oft-constipated gaze of Ma Wolowitz. I could marvel at how much childlike fun Sheldon seemed to have playing with his new model train set, and how much a conductors hat suits him. I could bemoan the fact that Raj was virtually MIA, or, for that matter, that Penny had scarcely anything to do other than scarf down the final dumpling at the start of the show.

Instead, I think it best to focus completely on one Amy Farrah Fowler, since her slow-burn kooky courtship of Leonard Hofstadter utterly dominated the episode. So brilliantly, Emmy-baitingly played by Mayim Bialik, Amy asserted herself as a major comic force on tonight’s Big Bang, so much so that I suspect a few of you will be spending your time on the message boards complaining that there was much too much of her. I will not be joining you. Nope, I adore Amy. Forthwith, in chronological order, here are my top 10 favorite Amy moments from “The Pulled Groin Extrapolation”: READ FULL STORY »

'The Office': How's new boss Andy Bernard doing?

andy-the-office

Community: it’s not just a show that’s on before The Office. This week’s Office featured the Dunder-Mifflin crew coming together on a challenge to increase sales after new CEO Robert California said he wants to see them double their percentage growth this quarter, despite a little national recession.

Naturally, new boss Andy was feeling the pressure. He wanted to continue making a good first impression on Robert, so he crowd-sourced tie options in the conference room while Dwight led a meeting about a brand new heavy triangle tablet. (Side note: Awesome). READ FULL STORY »

The massive first-week sales of 'Gears of War 3' prove the world is hungry for an existential gorefest

Gears of War 3 is a bleak, weird game about emotionally numb dudes — blessed with biceps that are almost as big as their massive feelings — fighting against gun-toting monsters in a last ditch effort to save the few remaining scraps of human civilization that haven’t fallen into decay and ruin. In what might be a subtle indication of the national mood, Gears of War 3 is also a runaway success: According to Variety, the game sold three million copies in its first week. That’s a nice increase over Gears 2 (which took about a month to reach that milestone) and it’s enough to claim the title of Bestselling Videogame of 2011 for at least a month and a half, before the latest entry in the Call of Duty franchise sets yet another ungodly sales record. Melissa McCarthy and Andy Samberg pump the jam in 'SNL' promos

You stole my thought, Andy Samberg — Melissa McCarthy is actually my jam. Though to be fair, it’s beginning to look like she’s everybody’s jam. Heck, she’s even the Emmy voters’ jam! This is why, much like Samberg, we’re positively pumped to see her reunite with her Bridesmaids co-star Kristen Wiig when she tackles her first Saturday Night Live hosting gig this weekend.

If you just can’t wait until Saturday, there’s always McCarthy and Samberg’s hilarious promo video. Watch as they awkwardly  deftly channel their inner Technotronic, exchange precious gifts, and discuss the infamous scene that helped propel McCarthy to big-screen fame. “You took a s— in the sink,” Samberg explains. (As if we could forget.) Enjoy the video below!  READ FULL STORY »

Holly Madison takes out insurance on her breasts. Well... d'uh.

Holly-Madison

In the annals of unusual celebrity insurance policies, Holly Madison’s recent revelation that she has a $1 million policy with Lloyd’s of London on her breasts barely raises an eyebrow. After all, Adam Lambert’s crotch was covered for an even mil. Celine Dion reportedly insured her voice. Heck, David Lee Roth wisely — so so wisely — insured himself against his own sperm (should one ever complete its journey). READ FULL STORY »

LeAnn Rimes talks to Ellen DeGeneres about eating disorder rumors and her hubby's ex

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that LeAnn Rimes was the precocious youngster that nabbed the Best New Artist winner at the 1997 Grammys, isn’t it? That’s primarily because over the past few years, Rimes went from being a country-crossover sensation to tabloid mainstay, thanks to her relationship with her now-husband, Playboy Club actor Eddie Cibrian. (The two began an affair while working on 2009′s cheese-tastic Northern Lights, which ultimately turned into its own Nora Roberts drama and caused the demise of both of their respective marriages.)

The scandal that never-says-die got a second fourteenth life when Cibrian’s ex-wife Brandi Glanville debuted on The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills this week, prompting people to get invested in the story once more. In her premiere episode Glanville declared, “I was married to the number-one d—–bag of all time.”

Perhaps to make sure she doesn’t get a kicky new nickname courtesy of Glanville on The Real Housewives, Rimes appeared on Thursday’s installment of Ellen to discuss, among other things, her relationship with Cibrian. “Obviously, we made decisions that were not necessarily the right ones, but it obviously brought us to the place where we are now. And, we’re happy and we’re married. And we’ve always put his kids first. We took the kids into consideration with everything that we do,” Rimes told DeGeneres. “The way we handled it, I will always say, it could’ve been handled a lot better, but maybe we both didn’t have the tools at the time to do it properly. I think we have both come to a really good place in our lives. And, right now, I’m really at peace.” Watch the interview below. READ FULL STORY »

Hostage situation in Congress, 'The Onion' reports

Breaking News: Armed members of Congress have taken 12 kids hostage — at least, according to The Onion, the satirical newspaper and website.

The situation began earlier today when The Onion  tweeted, “BREAKING: Capitol building being evacuated. 12 children held hostage by group of armed congressmen. #CongressHostage.” An hour later, another tweet read, “Arlington gun shop confirms Rep. @EricCantor bought 6 semi-automatic handguns, 3 rifles & 600 clips of ammo last month #CongressHostage.”

They then linked to a video of the “hostages” in Congress, with voices being heard to say, “Hey Boehner, this kid’s got a phone,” followed by a gun-shot. As of right now, The Onion is still tweeting updates about the ongoing hostage situation.

The story is fake, but the response in the past hour has been very real. READ FULL STORY »

Was there anything more exciting on TV last night than baseball?

Evan-Longoria

The most exciting TV last night came unscripted. But unlike much of the Wednesday reality TV lineup, it didn’t involve histrionic singers or immunity idols. The drama came from a little game called baseball. And what drama!

If you were a Red Sox fan, your season’s sudden end felt apocalyptically anti-climactic. To put it into EW-friendly pop culture terms, the Sox missing the playoffs after entering September with a nine-game Wild Card lead is a bigger disappointment for the Nation than the respective bummer factors of The Phantom Menace, the Matrix sequels, that Roseanne finale, Chinese Democracy, and the oeuvre of Kevin Costner combined. And if you were a Rays fan, last night felt something like this. READ FULL STORY »

'Ghost' musical bows on Broadway in April 2012

Broadway, you in danger girl! Ghost The Musical is slated to make its American debut on April 23, 2012. The show will play in the Lunt-Fontanne Theater, which currently houses The Addams Family. Bruce Joel Rubin, who won an Oscar for his Ghost screenplay, has written the book and some lyrics to accompany the music and lyrics of Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart and Grammy-winning producer Glen Ballard. Tony winner Matthew Warchus (God of Carnage, La Bête) will continue directing the production as it carries over from London’s West End. Previews begin in March.
