Larry Merchant wants a shot at Floyd Mayweather ... in 1961.

Undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather knocked out WBC welterwight champion Victor Ortiz in controversial fashion last night, throwing two mighty punches at a defenseless Ortiz after the champion had lowered his gloves following a pause in the fourth round. While boos rained down on Mayweather after the fight, he redirected his fury at Larry Merchant, HBO’s infamously meandering 80-year-old analyst, who persisted with questions about the fight’s climax that the new champ tried to sidestep. Finally, Mayweather exploded, “You never give me a fair shake. HBO needs to fire you. You don’t know sh– about boxing!”

Merchant shot back, “I wish I was 50 years younger and I’d kick your ass” before handlers separated the two men. Watch the exchange, courtesy of TMZ, below: READ FULL STORY »

Glee and Modern Family are pitted against each in several major Emmy Award categories tomorrow night, including Best Comedy Series, but their rivalry has bloomed into a feud thanks to some comments from Modern Family‘s Sarah Hyland. As a guest on E!’s Fashion Police on Friday night, the actress who plays the oldest daughter of Ty Burrell and Julie Bowen mocked the red-carpet stylings of Glee‘s star, Lea Michele. “It’s like a slow-motion picture kind of thing. It’s just like, she puts her hands on her hips like this and like sticks out her collarbones — I don’t know if you can see — she sticks out her collarbones to make her look skinnier and she goes sticks out her lips,” she said, while simultaneously performing an impression. In a real-life story that is practically ripped from an episode of Glee, the mayor of Carrollton, Ga. has cancelled a stage production of The Rocky Horror Show that was slated to open Oct. 27 at the city-owned Carrollton Cultural Arts Center after viewing a risqué video clip from rehearsal. “I found it very offensive, not in keeping with the community of Carrolton, if you will,” Garner told Atlanta’s NBC-11 news. PopWatch Confessional: Entertainment therapy

We often joke about the PopWatch Confessional being a form of therapy: We read others’ comments, discover we’re not alone in certain behaviors, and somehow we feel better about ourselves. But have you actually used entertainment as therapy? Here’s why I’m asking, and warning, it’s a more serious discussion than usual. My father is nearing the end of a six-year battle with an illness. Every night this week, I’ve found myself watching Paul Wylie’s figure skating routine to the Untouchables soundtrack before going to sleep, waiting to see if I still get chills during the main theme segment, which kicks in at 3:30 in the video below. If I still get chills, then I’m doing okay. I’m not numb. I still have a capacity for joy. It’s a dangerous game to play. I’m sure there will come a time when I won’t, and that confirmation could make me even more sad. But for now, every time I do, it’s a source of comfort more than the actual entertainment itself. I tested it early just now, and I got chills because I got chills.  READ FULL STORY »

Dr. Oz (sort of) ruins apple juice. But that's not all!

Dr. Mehmet Oz caught a lot of flack this week after suggesting on his show Wednesday that many brands of apple juice had unhealthy levels of arsenic in them. According to The Chicago Tribune, the FDA has since responded to the claim, and said in a statement, “There is no evidence of any public health risk from drinking these juices. And FDA has been testing them for years.”

With what’s being touted as inconclusive testing and misleading results (the FDA claims Oz did not differentiate between organic arsenic, which is harmless, and inorganic arsenic, which can be lethal), the daytime doctor is in some hot water for what some are calling “fear-mongering.” (Though it’s hardly the first time, as he came under intense scrutiny for plugging the H1-N1 vaccine.) According to the Tribune, a spokesperson for The Dr. Oz Show said, “We don’t think the show is irresponsible. We think the public has a right to know what’s in their foods.”

So, thanks, Dr. Oz, for ruining apple juice. But he’s done more than that: Here’s some other things that Dr. Oz has ruined inadvertently — or otherwise — for us on his show: READ FULL STORY »

'The Lion King 3D': Is the 3-D worth it to see Simba on the big screen again?

Ah, the circle of life. First a Disney film is released out unto the world to run and jump and play with its paying audience, then it grows up into a strapping VHS that disappears into the vault for years at a time, then a Broadway show, a straight-to-video sequel, an IMAX re-release, a DVD, a special edition DVD, and so on, until finally it is reborn as a 3-D re-re-release. It really is beautiful when you think about it.

The Lion King is one of the early examples of the classic films slated to get an ex post facto 3-D conversion, and quite a few more are on the stereoscopic horizon, including the Star Wars films, Top Gun, My Dinner With Andre, and more. So is it worth it? READ FULL STORY »

The 100 best comedies of all time? Time Out London has an interesting, extremely British list

Categories: Lists-o-rama!

Making a “greatest movies” list is always difficult. Movie quality is subjective, after all: Which is “better,” the psychological depth of Citizen Kane, the relentless comic timing of Some Like it Hot, or the kinetic thrills of Raiders of the Lost Ark? By their nature, such lists are open documents, demanding debate. And that’s especially true of a list of movie comedies. The things that make us laugh are extremely personal and highly subjective. When someone tells me they don’t think Caddyshack is funny, I can’t help but judge them. (I, in turn, have felt the cruel judgment of close friends when I admit that I can’t stand Anchorman.)

Still, a new list by Time Out London takes a good stab at compiling the 100 funniest movies ever by specifically building their list from the opinions of over 200 comedy professionals: Stand-ups, comedy writers, and other professional funnymen (and women, too!). READ FULL STORY »
