Update: Read a rundown of the premiere here.

I love premiere week — probably more than my birthday and all major non-present holidays combined! And tonight brings one of my favorite shows back from hiatus: How I Met Your Mother.

Having seen the first half hour of the premiere (yes, that’s me gloating), I can’t wait for y’all to see it. And yes, I’ll be back later today with some thoughts on it. But while the show is on our brains, I wanted to toss out a question: What do you want to see this year? READ FULL STORY »

Which scene in 'Drive' shocked you the most?

With a box office-topping 3-D re-release, the animated classic The Lion King roared back into theaters, ushering in a whole new generation of fans… who can be just as horrified and upset as the rest of us were by Simba’s father’s terrible death when we saw it back in 1994. Of course, as far as shocking deaths at the movies went this weekend, nothing held a candle (or a crowbar… or a speeding car) to the spectacular, but unquestionably nowhere-near-kid-friendly flick, Drive. CAUTION: DANGEROUS CURVES AND MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD. READ FULL STORY »

From the EW Archives: Emmy winner Melissa McCarthy's EW Pop Culture Personality Test

If there was a belle of this year’s Emmys ball, it would have to be Mike & Molly‘s Melissa McCarthy, who was crowned best lead actress in a comedy series. It was a triumphant moment for an actress who, in the last year, went from having her right to star on a sitcom about two people falling in love questioned, to being the breakout star of the box office hit Bridesmaids and landing an upcoming spot hosting Saturday Night Live (Oct. 1). EW’s long been a fan of Groundlings alum McCarthy, an unsung hero on Gilmore Girls and Samantha Who?, and in 2009, we got to know her better with an EW Pop Culture Personality Test. Like all good comedy, it still holds up… READ FULL STORY »

Fall TV Mondays: What to watch? What to DVR?

There are a lot of things that stress me out in life: what to eat for lunch, what to wear to work, what to do after work…you know, decisions in general. But few things fill me with more anxiety than figuring out what to watch on TV during the fall season. From new and returning scripted dramas and comedies to so-bad-it’s-good reality shows, each night poses a fresh dilemma between what to tune into live versus what to save for the DVR (or for that matter, skip all together).

I’m sure I’m not the only one going through this. So, this season PopWatch readers, I say we  save ourselves the agony of indecision by declaring our allegiances early on. Everyday this week, I’m going to list the shows I plan to watch live, and record on my DVR, for this season’s coveted 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. slot. Then it’s your turn to share your picks. Let’s get started with Mondays below!  READ FULL STORY »

Last night, when the Emmys were announced for the Miniseries or Made or Television Movie category, two telefilms — Downton Abbey and Mildred Pierce — swept six of the seven categories. If you’re one of the people who hasn’t developed a driving obsession with these two series (especially the smash U.K. hit Downton Abbey, which is still a bit of a cult success Stateside), never fear. We can catch you up after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Emmys 2011: What was the best moment last night? How about the worst? Vote in our polls!

It seems fitting that the Emmys, an awards ceremony dedicated to honoring the best moments and performances in television over the past year, had so many of its own great moments and performances last night. While I’d personally argue that Amy Poehler (please, oh please, let her get her due for Parks and Recreation next year) leading her fellow Best Actress in a Comedy nominees to the stage when their names were called for the category was the funniest and most memorable moment of the evening, there were plenty others that made the evening shine.

Why they didn’t use The Office skit as the opener was truly baffling, considering that sketch was far and away the funniest scripted moment of the night, thanks to some killer cameos by Ashton Kutcher and Aaron Paul. (In bizarro Office world, Creed would so associate with Breaking Bad‘s Jesse.) READ FULL STORY »

'Newsies' hits the stage -- EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK

“What’s different about my Jack as opposed to Christian Bale’s Jack? He’s a bit more fun-loving,” says Newsies star Jeremy Jordan (pictured, singing “The World Will Know” to his fellow warbling paper peddlers, including Andrew Keenan-Bolger’s Crutchie) about taking over Bale’s part in the stage version of Disney’s cult hit. “He’s a little less broody. He still has the same dreams and aspirations. He’s just as powerful, but he’s much more flirty.” He’s also much smaller: “Instead of being bigger than everybody, and almost intimidating,” adds Jordan, “he finds himself as one of the guys.”

Newsies, which opens on Sept. 25 at the New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse, also gives Jack some new songs to sing and a whole new love interest. READ FULL STORY »

Seriously PopWatchers, let’s all work together to make this happen. Write to your local congressman if you have to. It needs to be stated all across the land: Amy Poehler and Melissa McCarthy simply must host next year’s Emmys together.

With all due respect to host Jane Lynch, Poehler and McCarthy were the two funny ladies who truly dominated the stage during the Emmys telecast, walking away as the night’s big winners. READ FULL STORY »

BREAKING: Jon Hamm in a tux! (With special, equally attractive guest Christina Hendricks)

Yes, you’re excited for Kyle Chandler and Melissa McCarthy, and, yes, you loved that Office parody. But, still, we know that nothing about the Emmys got you more pumped than the image of everyone’s favorite cartoon pilot, Jon Hamm, in a tux. Alas, Don Draper didn’t win last night — even if his show, Mad Men, did — so we were left to settle for a few fleeting moments with Hamm on the red carpet. So, above left, we offer you an antidote to the withdrawal: The two best-looking people at the Emmys, for your computer wallpaper’s pleasure. Enjoy!

How did Jane Lynch do as Emmys host? Vote in our poll!

Blame Jimmy Fallon? Perhaps the Late Night host set the bar way too high with his top-notch opening number last year, but it seems a good number of you on Twitter were a tad disappointed in Jane Lynch’s hosting duties at the Emmys last night. (EW’s Ken Tucker would beg to differ, noting she was, “Excellent, and even better in her quick, throwaway moments than in the funny taped pieces.”)

While that bland opener (Alec Baldwin or no Alec Baldwin, it certainly got the show off on the wrong foot) certainly did her no favors, some — including yours truly — feel the ceremony didn’t allow Lynch to play to her strengths. READ FULL STORY »
