'Revenge': Down with the rich! Did you watch the second episode of ABC's new melodrama?

I was a big fan of the premiere of Revenge last week, which found a nice tonal mixture between soap-opera froth and high-melodrama insanity. That’s a difficult tone to hit every week, and I fully expected a drop-off in quality in the second episode. Not so! To my eyes, last night’s episode followed through on creator Mike Kelley’s promise that Revenge will keep things moving lickety-split. In just one hour, the show featured the fall of a Wall Street titan, a post-affair shakedown, a potentially fatal heart attack for a somewhat extraneous character (farewell, lovable poor dad?), and a polo match. I’m definitely intrigued.

In some ways, Revenge is almost starting to feel like a secret remake of Lone Star, last season’s best-show-ever-for-a-week. Both shows are about characters who use secret identities to enmesh themselves in luxury super-cultures; both shows feel uniquely attuned to the current burn-the-rich moment in America. At the same time, watching both shows gives you a voyeuristic kick: It’s fun watching the rich play, especially when they’re playing against each other. (Is Revenge as good as Lone Star was? Maybe not. But it will air a third episode, which is nice.)

Last night, Emily turned her Sniper Rifle of Vengeance on another one of her father’s old friends — a hedge fund trader named Bill Harmon who has managed to continually make money during the Recession. I figured we were being prepped for some kind of Madhoff melodrama. But Emily’s plot turned out to be a lot simpler: She just convinced Bill to invest all his money in Allcom Cellular, a company which appeared to be on the cusp of signing an exclusive contract with Nolan.

This led to one of the least realistic portrayals of Wall Street ever committed to film, with Bill screaming “Buy Allcom! Buy everything!” and everyone in his office flop-sweating while they invested $2 billion based on a tip from a mysterious young woman who their boss met one day earlier. It was a bad move — Nolan was actually investing in their competitors, and the hedge fund was ruined.

This was a pretty simple twist; Emily’s little mini-missions of vengeance are going to have to get more complicated to keep us interested. But the show kept all the other subplots zipping along at a fast pace. Nolan stuck a deal with Jack — the man with the povo-glam stubble — promising to give back Jack’s boat if he promises to be Nolan’s friend for a summer. Jack’s little brother Declan continued his flirtation with Charlotte, who is currently some Wealthy Douchebot named Adam. Lydia tried to blackmail Conrad over their affair. In the episode’s best scene, Emily sat down with Victoria for a nice little afternoon tea; thrillingly, every word the two secret enemies said to each other was a lie. They even got into a nice little semi-existential argument: Emily explained that she had a passion for history, since “Our past defines us,” while Victoria explained her own belief that “Our choices define us.”

The most fun thing about Revenge‘s second episode was that the show’s regular flirtations with pure camp are tempered by the fact that nearly every plot comes down to one thing: Money. The Porters are feeling the squeeze of our bad economy: Dad is broke, and the bar is barely hanging on. Lydia is descending into financial ruin — losing her house, her jewelry, “even the dog” — and she’ll do anything not to live like common people. There’s a great, almost dystopian sense that the rich families in the Hamptons have erected a wall around their community, where it’s still 2005 and Alan Greenspan never retired. The episode’s best line was almost a throwaway from Adam the Douchebot: “Stay on your own side of the economy, you little dog!”

By the end of the episode, another face was crossed off Emily’s photo. But vengeance comes with a price. She might have had a fun first date with Daniel, and an even nicer surprise birthday party. But in the end, she had to wish herself –her real self — a happy birthday, all alone. Her closing words had the soothing tones of a Meredith Gray wrap-up narration, but the subject matter was much colder: “The only person we can truly trust is ourself.”

I think I’m sticking with Revenge for the forseeable future. Viewers, what did you think of the second episode? Were you as sad as I was that we didn’t get another Confucius quote in this episode? I mean, sure, Oliver Wendell Holmes is nice, but I know Confucius, and Oliver Wendell Holmes is no Confucius.

Can’t believe how addicted to this show I am now. I love the stare downs between Emily and Victoria. The room feels so cold.
And wow that wardrobe… so jealous. I’ll be tuning in next week for sure. Hopefully EW will do recaps soon? *nudge nudge*

    • Mel

best show of the season so far.

      • Summer

I don’t think I’ve loved a show this much since the first season of Gossip Girl.

And this is better than that BY FAR.

      • hmm

question is what will they do in season 2+.
season one take out the son
season two take out the daughter
season three take out the husband
        season founr take out victoria

the only issue is that one revenge takedown per episode is a bit much. i can see the first one in the pilot being simple and straightforward enough to be self-contained, but this episode’s was too easy. would have liked to see it over a few episodes and do some character development about the target. this holmes guy was too “evil” – make the characters 3 dimensional; show some good to him and make the decision to get revenge tough and conflicted. would actually be cool if at some point, emily/amanda decides not to take down a target. anyway, still watching.

About the take downs, I heard one character will be down systematically in the first 4 episodes. Then larger archs will happen. I’m not worried about the longevity issue.

        Can’t wait!

    • thin

I’m enjoying it a lot. Those first five minutes of the premiere got its hooks deep into me.

      • Max

Agree with Steve, there should be a build up where 3 or 4 all go down the same episode much like “The Godfather”.

    • ChaCha

I’m addicted already too. I thought Ringer was going to be my new big addiction this season, but Revenge snuck up on me. Any show that can make me shout out “Yeah!” (when she took down Bil)l, something I rarely do, I knew it had its hooks in me.

    • Yina

      Love it!

  • DO RECAPS FOR THIS SHOW

love this show please do recaps it deserves it!!

    • musa

      i like it

    • Riot Act 666

ABC hit another one out of the ballpark!

      • jacula

        Me too!

    • craftylime

      This was a recap.

      • ChaCha

You’re right, but they need to put it in the “recaps” column. I only found this by searching the show’s title.

    • Hollywood Plant

ABC can do no wrong! Another winner!

      • Jay

ABC cancelled Better Off Ted 2 years ago….. I assure you, they CAN do wrong

      • dexx

How is that wrong on their part? Stations don’t spend money to air shows just for the heck it. They need to make money and it comes from advertising and if enough of the right demo of people aren’t watching, the money isn’t coming in. Common sense.

      • Dave

Actually, the cancellation of Better Off Ted is completely ABC’s fault. They treated the show like crap, barely gave it any promotion, burned off episodes during the holidays when no one is watching TV and put it in terrible timeslots. They never gave the show a chance to find an audience.

      • thin

Tough to viably make that argument when they gave it a second season when there was no (ratings) reason to do so. I loved it, but I get why it was cancelled.

  • STEVE ZISZOU

I find that I often shout “REVENGE” while watching this program on TV. (Usually every five minutes or so.)

    • Katrob

Wow, this could make an already good show that much better… guess what I’ll be doing next week.

    • Mellissa

      LOL, new drinking game?

    • Lauren

haha, i’m joining in next week. Revenge! here, here

    • Woot

Drink every time Emily/Amanda stares at someone?

  • Gael

this show is rather surprisingly good. emily vancamp really irritated me back in everwood, and i found her interestingly refreshing in brothers and sisters, but now it seems as if she’s really found her stride.

    • Laura

Huh. I actually loved her in Everwood.

  • annie

wasn’t the first episode told five months earlier? second episode took place the week after the yacht party as said by Ashley (Emily’s friend) so it’s more like 18-19 weeks earlier as we count back to the present… not 12 weeks like the episode starts off… timeline is off…

    • Sherrip

I wasn’t paying that close attention the first week, I do think they showed the murder, and then the screen said 13 weeks before- anyways, I know it was the end of May, and they had a 13 ep order and they’ve said the murder will be wrapped up in the 13th ep.

      • Clarissa

annie is right, it did say five months eariler.

    • Kim

Here’s the timeline: When Emily/Amanda decides to rent the house for the summer, it isn’t even summer yet- its a sort of future arrangement. Come Memorial Day, she is moved in and meeting everyone. A few weeks after the events of Memorial Day (mid June) the events of episode 2 take place which brings us to 12-13 weeks before Labor Day

      • Kim

To clarify, she signs to rent the house 5 months before Labor Day but moves in around Memorial Day

    • RobSD

The first episode started with the engagement party/shooting at a Labor Day party, the first Monday of September. It flashbacked to a Memorial Day party, the last Monday of May. That makes it a little over 13 weeks, but nowhere near the 5 months you thought it was.

      • lacey

We never saw how much time passed between her touring the rental beach house to her moving in. Now I’m not an expert on renting/moving and this is tv land but one would assume it would take more than a day for this all to happen. She toured the beach house 5 months ago and agreed to rent it. Now it’s 13 weeks until her engagement party we saw at the beginning of episode 1.

      • thin

It very clearly stated on screen that we jumped back to five months earlier from the engagement party. As others have said, the missing time was probably taken up with the move, but the show didn’t indicate where that time went.

      • ChaCha

You’re right, Thin…I remember seeing that info on the screen too.

  • Kaiulani

It’s now earned series recording status on my dvr even though I love to watch it live. I am so in!

    • Jessica

this! it’s the only series i’ve been watching live because i’ve been so excited about it! i still tape it too to rewatch lol

    • tv_reader

Bingo — season pass. Me too.

  • Delon

I was completely hooked after the first episode. Far superior to Ringer. Of all the scripted shows that debuted this fall Revenge is my favorite.

    • Katie

Agree! I had higher hopes for Ringer and did not expect much from Revenge. But I love Revenge and have told everyone to start watching so we can discuss it!

      • lickthis

ITA I expected Ringer to be better, but instead Revenge is so Much Better, especially the characters and the clothes.

    • JosiePosie

Revenge is a better show than Ringer. But I still like both , and I plan to continue watching. I’m pretty sure Ringer will last at least one season. There’s no way the CW is going to pull their Golden Girl’s (Sarah Michelle Gellar) show off the air without at least giving it one year. I hope ABC gives Revenge a real chance as well.

    • ashley

Completely agree. The first 20 min of Revenge was better than the past 3 episodes of Ringer.

    • thin

This has been a pleasant surprise, and Ringer (so far) has been unpleasantly disappointing.

  • Kira J

I haven’t neen this hooked on a show so quickly as since the first Melrose Place or maybe the first seasons of Desperate Housewives. I love it so much! Supernatural will always have my heart, but I can get a little side action with Revenge on Wednesday nights!

    • lickthis

Haha Kira, you’re a SPN fan too Awesome, we have same taste in shows

  • Eli

Best new show of the season for me and also biggest surprise of the season.

Emily van Camp is a great actress and her scenes with Madeleine Stowe are a rare prime-time treat to watch.

    • tessa

Agreed. Love this show and the scenes between Van Camp and Stowe are terrific. I enjoy the supporting characters as well. Very entertaining, interesting show.

  • Matt

@Annie – I was confused for a moment too (because I don’t think the show did a good job at making this clear). But ’5 months ago’ was when Emily/Amanda looked at the house and decided to rent, Then the scene with her and the british assistant unpacking her house was (supposedly) fast forwarded to 13 weeks before the engagement party.

    • Katrob

Yeah, she originally looked at the house in the spring, before the start of “summer in the Hamptons” The whole party on the boat, etc. I assuming was a jump forward happening around Memorial Day weekend?

  • really ?

I watched the first episode -had mixed feelings. Never really liked the leading actress but intrigued by the story-line / one early sneak-peak called it a modern day Monte- Cristo revival / Well, it did not worked for me. . After 10 minutes into the second episode I simply switched to a different channel.. Bon voyage Revenge – I’m done with you.

  • really ?

Sorry- it did not work for me, My spelling was incorrect.

  • VanderV

As long as VanCamp is in the show, I dont think I’ll ever stop watching.

    • Jacquelyn

      Fully second that!

  • Samantha

I love the show. I hope the ratings keep up so we get more revenge!

  • Patchi

I’m surprised at how much I like this show it wasn’t on my list of fall shows to watch but I decided to record the first episode anyway and I really enjoyed I think it’s my favorite new show so far, I watched last nights episode live and I’m definitely at king with it for awhile .

    • es

      same here

    • Judy

Seconding all of this exactly! I’m floored by how enjoyable it is.
