Ben Stiller and Anna Faris named as upcoming hosts for 'Saturday Night Live': Excited?

Time to step aside, Alec Baldwin. Some more actors will soon need to bask in the glow of getting the opportunity to host Saturday Night Live. NBC announced today that Ben Stiller and Anna Faris will host SNL on Oct. 8 and 15, respectively. It will mark the second time both stars will be headlining the show. (Stiller, who was a cast member for just a few episodes back in 1989, hasn’t graced Studio 8H as a host since 1998, while Faris gave it a go back in 2008.)

So what can we expect — or at least hope to expect — from the funny stars? Since Stiller will be promoting his upcoming comedy Tower Heist, don’t be too surprised to see some high-profile cameos. (Hey, if Baldwin can get his Oscar-hosting buddy Steve Martin to stop by, maybe Stiller can get Eddie Murphy to do the same? Eh, probably not, but we can settle for Jay Pharoah’s impression.) Even though Stiller never really had a fair shot at doing sketch comedy, the guy is really good at it (RIP, The Ben Stiller Show), which he should be able to prove when he hosts again. I’m mostly just holding out on the vain hope that Stiller’s Zoolander will somehow meet Bill Hader’s Stefon during Weekend Update and we’ll all lapse into some bizarre space time continuum at New York’s hottest clubs. (Sidenote: Stiller will be accompanied by musical guests Foster the People, ensuring you’ll have “Pumped Up Kicks” stuck in your head well through Halloween.)

As for Faris, who will have musical guest Drake by her side with his own brand of earworms, well, we’ve long known that she’s one of the funniest ladies out there. So long as she doesn’t make us endure the trailer for her new comedy What’s Your Number? one more time, we’re counting on hers to be a solid show, too. Plus: Fingers crossed her adorable husband Andy Dwyer, er, Chris Pratt stops by!

Thankfully, the wait for Stiller and Faris won’t be dreadful, as we’ve got Emmy-winner Melissa McCarthy, who will be making her SNL debut, hosts this week’s episode with musical guest Lady Antebellum.

Are you excited that Stiller and Faris are returning for hosting duties, PopWatchers? What do you hope they’ll do during their gigs? Share in the comments section below!

I am over the moon about this. I loved when Anna hosted a few years back, and now that she has some experience, I know she’ll be even better. As for Ben, I’m excited for him too. Quite honestly, every host who’s friends with Bill Hader always ends up doing well. (Probably because the episodes tend to be Hader-heavy). So, yeah, excited!

Bummed at the music guests announced so far this season. Surely SNL can do better.

  • Templar

    No.

    • VanderV

Yup, annuh faris yes but not Stiller. Watching this guy standup gig like worse than nail on a chalkboard …with william hung singing in the background.

  • Molly

    I can’t wait for Melissa!!!

    • Ken Hidaka

I saw Melissa McCarthy from “Mike & Molly” and she rocked. Just wait til Anna Torv, the star of “Fringe” hosts Saturday Night Live. I bet she’s itching for a shot at being a funny girl. Hey, you never know.

  • markinnyc

wait…..that will make four shows in arow that Justin Timberlake does not host…that has to be some sort of a record.

Don’t jinx it. Now he’s going to show up, and mug for the camera, taking away all the attention from the host. See: Amy Poehler (36×01) and Paul Rudd (34×08). It’s becoming obnoxious.

Great news. It would be even better if Charlie Day was hosting too. The man is hilarious on Sunny and was the best part of Horrible Bosses. Come on SNL make it happen.

    • Erica

      I couldn’t agree more.

    • Dave

Yes, Charlie Day definitely needs to host. And Joel McHale too.

      • Squishmar

Joel McHale would be amazing. Love him.

    • khidak1

Guess what, Charlie Day DID host SNL recently.

Now, I’ll be crossing my fingers and hoping Anna Torv, the star of “Fringe” gets her shot, and who knows? Maybe, she will be the next guest host when the new year comes.

      C’mon SNL, we want Torv!

Joel McHale. Amy Poehler. Steve Carell. Please, and thank you.

      How about Christina Applegate?

      • chris

        that would be good

    • chris

agreed with charlie day, joel mchale, steve carrell, and amy poehler but also donald glover and nph again

    • adam

Add Busy Phillips to the list.

  • etm

I think I’m the only person in the world who doesn’t like Anna Faris.

    • Templar

I confess. I’ve never seen her in anything.

    • Anonymous

      Yes you are.

  • Meg

Okay, so now my hopes are up about Zoolander. I’m going to be thoroughly ticked off if that doesn’t happen!

    • Squishmar

Pretty amazing prediction… Zoolander and Stefan together. Aly got it right. Impressive.

  • Taryn

SO excited about this!! I can’t wait to see Foster The People on the show

  • stutzbearcatjim

Eddie Murphy needs to host, but he never will. Excited about Stiller. His show in 98 was hilarious

  • Brian

I recall that Ben Stiller was scheduled to host back in 2001, but when 9/11 happened he cancelled hosting the show and Seann William Scott took his place.

    • ryan

yes he was and it was very controversial. he was had a big ego about it and cancelled at the last minute and sean stepped in with no concern. i thought for sure he would never be asked to host again

      • Squishmar

I thought it was Drew Barrymore…but you’re right. Drew hosted while there was the anthrax scare going on.

  • mar

Would really love to see Michael Weatherly host SNL. I think it would help to see him in something else so that people won’t just say he’s that NCIS actor.. Plus he’s great with comedy!

  • Aidan

I want the cast of Community (specifically Joel, Donald, Danny, Chevy, and Allison.) and the cast of Parks and Rec (specifically Aziz, Chris, Nick, Adam, Rashida, and Aubrey.)

    • Squishmar

Chevy on SNL? It’ll never happen. ;)

  • Ken

I can think of a bunch of celebrities who are itching for an opportunity to host Saturday Night Live, especially Anna Torv from “Fringe”

I want to see Anna Torv, the star of “Fringe” on Saturday Night Live this season. I think an actress as talented and beautiful as Anna Torv deserves a shot at hosting Saturday Night Live.

She has a popular tv show on FOX, where she plays an FBI agent, and an upcoming movie coming out sometime next year, but she has never done comedy before, and this would be a golden opportuntity for Anna Torv to show a live studio audience just how funny she can really, really be.

It would be interesting to see her make the transition from FBI Agent Olivia Dunham to funny girl, based on the different characters she could play on the show.

All I’m saying is “Give Anna Torv a chance!”

It’s 50-50 at best, and she may or may not host this season, but give her a chance.

  • ken

Did you know it’s been almost 20 years since someone from Australia last hosted Saturday Night Live (Elle MacPherson in 1996)?

How about giving Anna Torv from “Fringe”, Poppy Montgomerty from “Unforgettable”, Simon Baker from “The Mentalist” and maybe even movie actor Hugh Jackman a chance to show the world that they CAN do more than just perform popular tv dramas.

I think Torv, Montgomery, Baker and Jackman would make wonderful guest hosts on SNL, and I bet they’re all itching for a golden opportunity to perform live comedy for once in their careers, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they all got the opportunity to host SNL this season., and possibly next season as well

It would be a high point for their acting careers.

    • Squishmar

That’s not “almost 20 years.” That’s 15 years. But I like your suggestions. It’s really hard to believe Hugh Jackman has never hosted. He’d be great!

      • Ken

I’m glad to hear that you think Hugh Jackman along with Anna Torv, Poppy Montgomery and Simon Baker would all make wonderful guests.
