Are you ready for Justin Timberlake as a leading man?

In the cover story of this month’s Esquire, Justin Timberlake talks about the day he turned invisible. Or rather, the day he wore an Ernie-from-Sesame Street costume and toodled around Comic-Con like just another dude in a costume. (Writer Chris Jones played Bert. Big summer for the multi-colored gender-less roommates!) The joke, of course, is that Timberlake is such a recognizable and oddly approachable superstar that he has to put on a muppet costume to be incognito. (“I can sometimes walk around New York if I dress the right way,” he tells Esquire, “but that’s it.”) It’s been a big year for Timberlake’s acting career — he starred in summer comedies Friends with Benefits and Bad Teacher, and don’t forget all that Oscar talk off of Social Network — but next month’s In Time will be his first outing as a blockbuster-action protagonist. Do you think Timberlake can pull it off? Or should he start at least vaguely considering the thought of producing a new album?

  • There are *no* words. *Not* a compliment. Heath, we *still* miss you.

R.I.P. Heath Ledger. We will never forget you.

  • napster

He played an effeminate, nauseating creep in Social Network. Wasn’t much of a stretch.

Yea when i saw it i thought “hmm.. justin timberlake playing a douche doesnt seem like a huge stretch.”

I am one of the biggest fans of these arsitts, but I must say, this song is not good. These arsitts can produce much better quality work. This song is not catchy, creative or memorable. This is what happens when you become over confident and start underestimating your audience. Unfortunately the radio and tv networks will force it down our throats, and it\’ll begin to grow on us. But on first listen, its very poor quality over all, from technical production to songwriting. It sounds like music spaghetti, its too busy. I\’m a true fan of all these arsitts, but I\’m very disappointed.

You are so right, Napster! JT really is an effeminate, nauseating creep.

  • Zach

I don’t know who brought up Heath, but JT as leading man? Sure, why not? He’ll never be Daniel Day-Lewis let alone George Clooney, but he’s fine for comedies and rom-coms. The Social Network proved he could act well enough if the script is good and requires him to be charismatic. But his biggest successes will probably still be on SNL.

How did that movie prove he can act? He’s not a good actor in any movie.

  • Marissa

Justin can’t really act that well, I don’t think. People say he does a good job, but I think he’s just game and charming but that really can’t carry a movie. He really is much better with music and dancing so I’d like him to forget about movies for a while and get back to that.

  • Ledger

He couldn’t carry heath ledgers jock strap.

    • Bebe

He’d be too busy smelling it.

  • Stacie

I think the only reason people pay attention to him in movies is because he’s Justin Timberlake. Anyone could have played that part in Social Network – it was a good part! I’d rather see other actors given these opportunities. JT is becoming less cool to me everyday.

  • Rollick

I think the joker from dark knight is the greatest screen villian of all time.

  • nykolus

    simply put, “no”…

I look forward to seeing Justin Timberlake and Cillian Murphy face off in the forthcoming film, ‘In Time’ and I hope Justin Timberlake does more mainstream movies from now on rather than resuming his music career.
Everyone is hounding him about why he’s doing movies instead of music and now he has sadly stopped doing films by the looks of it with only ‘In Time’ left to be released and no other film projects.

    • Liz

I look forward to it as well, but I think based on the casting I will be rooting for the bad guys. Murphy, Kartheiser and co are far more subtle actors and I prefer that. JT does his best work in in-your-face roles like SNL.

    • jessica

I agree with you I want justin timberlake to do more films too. Lets hope so.

  • Stef

The only thing I’m ready for Justin timberlake to do is go away .

    • CW

      Cosign on that.

Agree. I really don’t get the appeal of this guy. He wasn’t that appealing to me even when he was with Nsync.

  • Templar

IMO Justin is just OK. Not leading man material, somewhere in the Topher Grace/Toby McGuire territory.

  • Cookie

I think he can pull it off, but will he be able to have “Justin” totally disappear into the character?

  • GeeMoney

JT is a supporting actor, not a leading man. Besides, he needs to go back into the studio and make another album!

  • Sue

Don’t know why Heath Ledger’s name was brought up but I agree that no one ever will take his place. Nice to see other people still feel that way. RIP Heath. Gone but never forgotten.

  • jessica

Justin Timberlake can do what the hell he wants to do. He’s cool like that, and yes he can be a leading man.He can act better than some that’s out there now Aston Kutcher can you hear me!!
