Spike Lee has made me love “Empire State of Mind” again. I was so over the Jay Z-Alicia Keys song two years ago when the New York Yankees co-opted it for their run at (and subsequent win) the 2009 World Series. While it was the perfect anthem for the time, you just couldn’t escape the song. But I have to tell you, Spike Lee’s State Farm commercial, which used children singing the song and paying tribute to NYC firemen, has made me smile and tear up just about every time I saw/heard it this weekend. And now I can’t get enough. Take a look:

State Farm – not Allstate
I saw the commercial last night, and fell in love with it. What power it had with the children singing it. The words began to mean much, much more with this new generation. Loved the commercial, love New York.
I also teared up when I saw it.
I am balling my eyes out!!!!!
Add me to the weepy bunch. The emotion in it really caught me off guard…very powerful.
Seriously just cried.
Same here. Stopped whatever I was doing and just watched (and teared up) everytime it came on. So good.
The terrorists didn’t accomplish destroying our spirit. R.I.P. to all those lost. Gone, but never forgotten.
I saw that commercial on tv today and I paid attention just because of the song, then when I realized it was 9/11 themed I started getting tears in my eyes! So beautiful!
why don’t more companies try to manipulate us emotionally into giving them money. It seems to be working for statefarm.
“Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.” Children and firefighters are neighbors. Where I’m from–you don’t see a high school without a fire station on the same block, which puts the middle and elementary schools within walking distance. All State Farm is doing is showing appreciation. At what point does money have anything to do with the commercial?
God forbid you ever see the Budweiser commercial that played at the Super Bowl just after 9/11.
Not true. I’ve worked for the company for 35 years and that is what we are all about. We really do care about people, policyholder or not. 9-11 broke our hearts and still does.
So now I’m crying. Awesome.
Verizon and Budweiser also had very good 9/11 commercials.
I will patronize Bud, Verizon and State Farm simply because they took the time and care to produce three wonderful commercials on 9/11. All brought tears especially the Bud spot. GREAT JOB and NEVER FORGET!!!!!!
Mesmerized me! Good for Spike Lee for bringing a tribute to FD and the 9/11…
smiling thru my tears as i watched this.
