Ryan Gosling on breaking up that street fight: 'Then the guy from 'The Notebook' shows up and makes it weirder'

Ever since Ryan Gosling moved to New York City, the streets have felt much sexier and a little bit safer, thanks in part to his intervening when an apparent art theft fight broke out in downtown Manhattan last month. (Sorry, Canada, but we’re never giving him back!)

When a very enthusiastic citizen caught the whole thing on camera and the moment, in which Gosling broke up the scuffle with the help of his very, very nice arms, went viral instantly. While the world swooned, it turns out the Drive star was kind of embarrassed by the whole thing. MTV News recently asked Gosling about his heroic efforts, and the actor explained what really went down and why the whole thing sort of bummed him out.

“I think that guy really was stealing that other guy’s painting, so I should have just kept my nose out of it,” Gosling recalled, “It was sad, because it turns out that I said to the guy, ‘Why are you doing this?’ he said, ‘Well he tried to steal my painting.’ I said, ‘How do you know?’ and he said, ‘Well he comes here every day and looks at my paintings,’ which means the guy was a fan, and so he wanted the painting so bad he had to steal it because he couldn’t afford it. So he finally steals the painting and then he’s getting his ass kicked by his hero, and then the guy from The Notebook shows up and makes it weirder.” (Actually, as far as getting caught stealing goes, that sort of sounds like a best case scenario, no?)

Gosling continued, “It’s just, the whole thing. Nobody wins, nobody won. I did not win. I had just come from the gymnasium, and I was all stretched out and feeling warmed up.” Sorry, but the image of Ryan Gosling (who adorably uses words like, “gymnasium”) “feeling warmed up”? Now, everybody’s a winner!

Ahhhhhh…. I need to lie down. This adorable hotness (I never knew there was such thing before) is overwhelming me. Deep breaths…. Breathe in, breathe out…

  • Aunt Sassy

What is this creepy story–“his very, very nice arms.” You’re a journalist, not a 12 year old girl.

    • Chelsea

Relax, this isn’t the New York Times, it’s a pop culture blog…nothing wrong with openly admiring Ryan’s…uh…assets.

Maybe Aly is a 12 year old protege who EW hired to access the teen audience more easily. this would also explain all the Twilight and Hunger games articles. But seriously, RG does have very, very nice arms.

To be fair, my crush on Ryan Gosling makes me act like a giggling 12 year old girl as well.

I have had the hots for him for many years. Such an excellent actor and pretty darn cute to boot.

I love this man. Also, I love the fact that he’s into the older ladies (Sandra Bullock, Eva Mendes), which means I’ve got a chance!

Sorry to bring you all down, but he was pretty dumb for getting involved and he is lucky he didn’t get hurt. I don’t know how things go down in Canada but in New York, unless it’s somebody you care abooot in a fight, you should mind your business. People here are crazy and you might end up getting stabbed in the face like that dumb lady in the subway who thought it was ok to scold a bum for smoking.

The way things go down in Canada is that we try to help where we can. And we’re bloody polite about it when we do, eh?

      • Samantha

ha ha ha ha great answer. (fellow Canadian)

I don’t know what’s happening to me but my crush on Ryan keeps growing and growing. He had me at shirtless in Crazy Stupid Love.

Please, please, please someone with audio productions skills turn “I was all stretched out and feeling warmed up” into a dance song.

What disturbs me are the girls just laughing at two guys beating each other up. Sad…. Then – “oh my God – that’s Ryan Gosling.” – Bad priorities in life – laugh at violence, and freak out when you see a celebrity. Its sad that no one else intervened.

    • a girl

Well it’s two girls. You’d have to be a pretty stupid girl to place yourself into a fight between two men. In the male dominated world we live in, women are already used as pawns in the fights for power and money and resources that men wage against one another. We don’t need to create more opportunities for women to get knocked around. Perhaps they could have called the police or cared more that two men were debasing themselves that way over a piece of property. Perhaps history has taught us that you can’t stop two men from warring over the meaningless. Why bother?
