EWwy winner Courteney Cox would like to kiss EW's...ewe

Well this is a delightful way to kick off a weekend. I’m suddenly more ready than ever to pound some grape!

Thrilled to be the esteemed recipient of a trophy in the shape of a ewe after winning the Lead Comedy Actress category of the 2011 EWwy Awards — EW.com’s annual celebration of the television performers and series (for comedy and drama) that you readers said deserved Emmy nods — Cougar Town star Courteney Cox leans in for a smooch (in a pose strikingly similar to the way Jules Cobb performs damage control on an oversize glass of red)….

“I’m not kissing your butt,” she claims. “But Thank You so much EW!!!!!”

Invisible opera gloves to you, Courteney!

Cougar Town‘s midseason premiere can’t come soon enough.

Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore reportedly at odds. Speaking of odds...

Things are not looking great for the six-year marriage of Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher. Though Two and a Half Men‘s new star has tweeted that we shouldn’t jump to conclusions — “When you ASSUME to know that which you know nothing of you make an ASS out of U and ME” — the tabloids are quoting sources close to Moore as saying that their relationship is teetering. Hence, paparazzi are stalking Kutcher to see if he’s still wearing his ring, Taiwanese artists have tackled the rumored discord, and oddsmakers are even speculating on their future together. According to PaddyPower.com, a website that clearly takes bets on anything, the odds of the couple divorcing before the end of 2013 are a cynical 2/5. Clearly, the smart money is thinking split. In fact, the smart money has already moved on to speculating about Ashton’s next girlfriend. Currently, Scarlett Johansson is the odds-on favorite (8/1) to land on Kutcher’s arm, with Eva Longoria (12/1), Jennifer Lopez (12/1), and Lindsay Lohan (16/1) close behind. The educated gambler in me trusts in past performance, so if I was a pathetic, compulsive gambler, I’d like Courteney Cox (25/1) and Madonna (33/1) as smart bets. I’m not compulsive enough, though, to lay money down on Sophia Loren (90/1).

Are you repelled by the practice of gambling on a marriage’s demise? Or is this the best news Lindsay Lohan has heard since Mean Girls?

The CW’s The Vampire Diaries may have been tops in EW.com reader ratings last week, but that was only based on partial data — we hadn’t yet been able to include Friday and Sunday programming. And now that a full week of new TV is under our belt, a new champion has emerged: AMC’s Breaking Bad, in which a desperate Walt turned to Saul for help after Gus brought the hammer down. Also moving into the top ranks: the season premieres of Friday’s sci-fi freakout Fringe, and Sunday’s lawyer-cum-political-cum-domestic drama The Good Wife. Tony Bennett on 'The Daily Show': Amy Winehouse knew she was going to die

Legendary crooner Tony Bennett stopped by The Daily Show on Thursday to talk about his new record-breaking album, Duets II, and he ended up sharing his sad impressions of working with the late Amy Winehouse while recording “Body and Soul.” “She knew that she was in a lot of trouble, that she wasn’t going to live,” Bennett said.

In the heartfelt and somber video, Bennett goes on to describe Winehouse as one of the few jazz singers who sang the “right way.” Check it out after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Honey Badger don't give a [bleep]... but he sure likes pistachios

Categories: Advertising, Television

Honey Badger, you’ve gone corporate! But I suppose if you were ever going to sell out, it would have been to crack some nuts. The one benefit of seeing PopWatch’s good friend, Honey Badger, join the mainstream? We get to see him using a snake as a whip, which is immediately going into my folder of “Great Ideas.” Thanks, HB. You never stop giving. Not that you give a f—. READ FULL STORY »

Sean Penn: Postmodern superhero?

Sean-Penn

Sean Penn has never played an action hero of the spandex and superpowers variety, though he does have a penchant for characters who display a certain type of populist heroism. For Penn, it seems art often imitates life as he crusades around the globe to end war, rebuilds devastated cultures (Haiti), and secures equal rights for all people. Just today, the actor marched with freedom protesters in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, brandishing a flag and demanding the transfer of power from the military leaders who succeeded Egyptian dictator Hosni Mubarak. Local media reported him as saying, “The world is inspired by the call for freedom.” This, just a week after the news that he worked to secure freedom for the U.S. hikers imprisoned in Iran, poses the question: If America is looking for a hero, could Sean Penn be it? Stop the presses! 'Newsies' may be heading to Broadway this spring

Disney’s new stage version of the 1992 musical film Newsies, which had its world premiere this week at Millburn, N.J.’s Paper Mill Playhouse to generally rave reviews, may be headed to Broadway this spring. EW has confirmed reports that Disney has been approached by several Broadway theater owners about a possible transfer of the production, which is currently slated to run through Oct. 16 at Paper Mill. There are no firm plans as yet, since Disney had only modest ambitions for the show: namely, licensing it for schools and community theater groups.

Though the original film was a box office flop, Newsies developed a cult following on home video thanks to Beauty and the Beast composer Alan Menken’s songs and the early, enthusiastic (and sometimes charmingly off-key) performance of Christian Bale as a turn-of-the-20th-century newsboy leading a strike against New York City newspaper barons. One potential hitch for mounting Newsies on Broadway is that the lead actor playing Bale’s character from the film is already committed to another production. Jeremy Jordan will play Clyde Barrow in the Frank Wildhorn musical Bonnie & Clyde, which is scheduled to begin previews Nov. 4 before a Dec. 1 opening.

'Person of Interest' second look: Are you still interested?

Person-Of-Interest-Caviezel

Last week, we were introduced to the crime fighting duo of Jim Caviezel and Benjamin Linus Michael Emerson on CBS’ Person Of Interest. I was intrigued by the pilot and thought it nicely tiptoed the line of presenting its heady premise — two men fight crime based on information generated by a machine that sees and hears everything — without falling too deep into it’s high-concept plot. I had assumed that the story would venture into Minority Report-esque questions about the moral ambiguity of preemptive action, but so far the show has avoided that whole argument by proving beyond a reasonable doubt that the Bad Guys really are bad guys and intend to do bad things to good people. POI deals with premeditated crime — not spontaneous crimes of passion — so in these days of electronic correspondence and surveillance, I suppose it’s plausible that an eavesdropping machine could sort through the din and generate information on what individuals were about to do. Course, maybe that’s just me being paranoid… moving on.

If you haven’t watched last night’s episode, tread carefully. There are some Spoilers ahead. READ FULL STORY »

Leaked images of iPhone 5 case inventories confirm that someday, maybe, there will be an iPhone 5

Categories: iPhone

Trying to get an early look at a new Apple product is kind of like trying to learn the plot of the next Christopher Nolan movie. The first couple thousand “facts” that hit the internet are invariably wrong, and even the occasional semi-legitimate “leak” usually winds up being much less revealing than we think. So grain-of-salt time: Tech blogs TiPb and Boy Genius Report have received screenshots purporting to present a list of items from AT&T’s inventory system, including six iPhone 5 cases. So now we know that — in a move guaranteed to send shockwaves rippling through our culture — Apple will release a new version of a ridiculously successful generation-defining product, and also if you’re feeling fancy you can put said product in a “Pearl Pink” case. Teen sensation punks Simon Cowell on 'X Factor'

Simon Cowell has terrified his share of aspiring stars during his years as a judge on American Idol and The X Factor. But last night (check out Annie Barrett’s recap), someone had the nerve to throw it right back at him, and Cowell’s stunned reaction was priceless. Fourteen-year-old Brooklyn phenom Brian Bradley took the air out the arena when he called Cowell out: “Yo, I swear to my life, you lucky we’re ain’t in the streets because if we were in the streets, this is what I’d say to you…”

Cowell was stunned. All the judges were stunned. The crowd went silent. But then Bradley launched into his rap, the oddly adorable “Stop Looking at My Momz.” Watch. READ FULL STORY »
