LIFE names 'The Worst Accents in Movie History.' Rough week, in'nit Anne Hathaway?

One-Day-Hathaway

One Day could very well turn out to be the most distracting movie of 2011. Either you couldn’t get attached because you’d read the book and knew the shocking, twist ending that was coming or you didn’t know and were so blindsided you had a hard time enjoying the rest of the film. But, there’s been an even bigger diversion that’s kept people for falling for the weepy, big-screen adaptation of David Nicholls’ best-selling novel: Anne Hathaway’s shaky British accent.

The folks over at LIFE would have to agree. In their list of “The Worst Accents in Movie History” they argue that Hathaway’s Emma is supposed to hail from Leeds, but the actress seemed to have picked up a whole bunch of regional dialects and compiled them into one super-distracting allegedly British accent. Of course, she’s hardly the only star to miss the mark completely when it comes to speaking in a foreign tongue. READ FULL STORY »

'South Park' vs. 'The Simpsons': Which is the better beloved animated comedy?

south-park-vs-simpsons

Comparing South Park to The Simpsons is like comparing cheesy poofs to doughnuts. Both are delicious, rich, and stay with you even after they’re finished. (Gross!) So how can we possibly determine which is the more superior animated comedy? It’s a tough debate, but Sandra Gonzalez and I attempted to name a victor. So read on, neighbor-inos, and let us know what you think in the comments below, m’kay?

(This is part of an ongoing series of posts in which EW writers debate the most defining pop culture rivalries. Past subjects have included Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera, Schwarzenegger/Stallone, Godfather/Goodfellas, Movies/Videogames, and the neverending boy-band battle between ‘N Sync and the Backstreet Boys. Come back here Thursday for more exciting face-offs!)

Kate Ward (South Park: Oh, awesome!): Okay, let’s get this started. Now, if the argument here was South Park versus The Simpsons seasons 1-11, I’d say you’d surely win in a landslide. Unfortunately, The Simpsons has allowed itself to shrink into a state of irrelevance over the past decade. Say it with me: D’oh! READ FULL STORY »

Have you ever jumped a little too high, sobbed a little too long, laughed a little too loudly at an inappropriate moment, or had some other physical reaction (involuntary groaning or spontaneous applause) in a movie theater that left you genuinely embarrassed? SPOILER ALERT: If you haven’t seen One Day, or read the book, go ahead and skip straight to the comments and share your story. If you have, here’s mine.  READ FULL STORY »

Chris Harrison blogs 'Bachelor Pad' episode 3

chris-harrison

I truly hope all of you are singing “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” in your head while reading this blog. Why on earth it’s taken us ten years to get Bret Michaels to come on our show and sing that song is beyond me. The good news is it finally happened, and all seems right with the universe. It wouldn’t surprise me at all if all the sudden the stock market went up and there was peace in the Middle East now. READ FULL STORY »

'Bachelor Pad' episode 3: 'You smell that? That's so disgusting.'

Pop quiz, rose lovers: If you haven’t seen tonight’s episode of Bachelor Pad (and why are you reading this if that’s the case?) please see if you can guess what caused the horrible stench described in the above quote:

A) Jake’s cologne, Fame Whore.

B) The Pad’s hot tub, before or after a cleaning.

C) The otherwise lovely horses who had the extreme misfortune to be employed during a horseback riding group date Vienna attended.

You’ll have to read my recap for the answer (UPDATE: Click for Kristen’s full Bachelor Pad episode 3 recap), but if you’ve seen tonight’s episode, riddle me this: Will anyone be brave enough to take on the power couples? If tonight’s elimination is any indication, the answer is: Not anytime soon. So who to root for? (Besides Stag, who probably has no chance.) Do you have a favorite? Or a least least favorite? And who did you think looked the best in his speedo? (My vote, as always, is Michael Phelps.)

Kate Winslet saves Richard Branson's mom in a fire

That headline is so fake-seeming, tragic, and awesome all at once. In what may turn out to be her most heroic role, actress Kate Winslet saved Richard Branson’s mother from a fire early Monday morning. Winslet and her two kids, who were staying with about 20 people at the largest house on Branson’s private isle in the British Virgin Islands, escaped the flames unharmed. The fire ignited as Tropical Storm Irene hit Necker Island with lightning and high winds.

“Many thanks to Kate Winslet for helping to carry my 90 year mum out of the main house to safety,” Branson wrote on his blog. “She was wondering when a Director was going to shout CUT!”

Biz humor! It’s what it’s all about.

What did you do today?

No, no, it’s not a competition. I mean, you already were going to lose because you don’t have a private island.

Lindsay Lohan wears Pippa Middleton's Royal Wedding dress to Kim Kardashian's nuptials: Game on!

Pippa-Lindsay

I’m not saying Pippa Middleton and Lindsay Lohan should engage in some sort of cage match or Hunger Games-type competition to determine who wore the glamorous Temperley dress best, but if they did, I would totally watch that. (Vegas odds would have to go in favor of Lohan, no? She’s pretty scrappy.) While Middleton technically wore it first, and in a gorgeous green, to the Royal Wedding of her sister Kate Middleton to Prince William, Lohan cleaned up nicely and (appropriately, no less) wore the equally lovely white version of the gown (guests were instructed to only wear black or white) to America’s — forgive us — Royal Wedding of Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries. USA! USA! USA!

Okay, since there’s probably not going to be any cage match, you tell us PopWatchers: Pippa or Lindsay? No fighting dirty in the comments section below!

'The Glee Project': What should change (and stay the same!) in season 2

[Spoiler Alert: Don't read on if you haven't seen the season finale of The Glee Project. I’m not going to lie, in the 20 seconds I thought Damien lost The Glee Project last night, I sent one angry tweet, an outraged text, and cursed aloud. (What can I say? The little Irish lad had put a spell on me — and pretty much everyone in that last-chance performance room.) So I was thrilled when Ryan Murphy announced that — TWIST — both Sam, whose name was first announced as the winner, and Damien would be getting seven-episode arcs on the next season of Glee. JOY!! Even more good news? Lindsay and Alex were also getting 2-episode stints! EVERYONE WINS!!

As a fan of all the finalists, this happy ending was a welcomed one. I love that we had two winners and, additionally, two consolation prize winners. Good for them.

Now, with a second season likely, I can’t help but reflect on the season gone by, which was, by my account, a stellar one. And I hope it stays that way. It’s one of the stronger new competition shows I’ve watched in a while, so I hope it doesn’t lose it’s momentum. How can they maintain TV viewers’ interest? Well, I’m glad I asked myself. Here are my suggestions. Feel free to add yours below in comments! READ FULL STORY »

Snap judgment of Kim Kardashian's wedding dress: Classic with a dash of crazy

If you couldn’t tell by the recent Keeping Up With the Kardashian marathons and a media circus that nearly rivaled the April nuptials of Prince William and Kate Middleton, Kim Kardashian got hitched in Santa Barbara, Calif., yesterday, and though official photos from the event are being kept mostly under wraps, some images have been released. (Us attempted to get first dibs with this photo, in which Kim and step-dad Bruce Jenner resemble two snowmen.)

In this gallery are images of the $20,000 cake and bridesmaids dressed in white — a move she totally stole from Middleton — and, of course, the dress! (See left!) Based on the details so conveniently leaked into the press, we knew the reality star/mogul/model/ubiquitous spokesperson would don a gown by family friend Vera Wang, who designed sister Khloe’s dress in 2009. But what would it look like? READ FULL STORY »

Katie Couric's talk show will be called 'Katie.' Enough already with the eponymous talk show titles?

In the grand tradition of Oprah, Ellen, and Anderson, former CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric’s syndicated daytime talk show — debuting in September 2012 on ABC affiliates — will be called Katie. Judging by the look of the pastels ‘n’ purple promo pic to your right, Katie will be shot in soft focus from my bedroom circa 1994. READ FULL STORY »
