Watching 'Mister Rogers' Neighborhood' as an adult is a freaky marvel. Did you know that?

In the wake of PBS’ announcement of a Mr. Rogers next-generation spinoff featuring a descendant of Daniel Tiger, I set out to recall exactly who Daniel Tiger was by watching a few clips of Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood on YouTube. (Because that’s what the internet, and my work days, are for.) The show was not much like I remembered — the rhythm, dialogue, and messages seemed absolutely foreign to me. Do you ever go back and watch a children’s show after 20-25 years and it’s just completely different? And you think, wow, maybe I should be learning anew from this kiddie crap every day?  READ FULL STORY »

Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' season finale

Chris-Harrison

Spanning two days and five hours of television, this is the biggest, most dramatic blog ever. I hope you enjoyed the way ABC programmed the Men Tell All on Sunday and rolled right into Monday’s dramatic season finale, which led us right into After the Final Rose. The Men Tell All special was a fun show to host. This is a very good group of guys that I enjoyed hanging around with this season so there really weren’t a lot of fireworks. I was very disappointed Bentley didn’t show up for the taping. As I mentioned we extended an invitation to him but he opted not to come. I would very much like to sit down and interview him. I have a standing invitation out to him that I will interview him anywhere and anytime he wants. As anybody that’s ever been on this show will tell you, I will give him a very fair interview. I’m really not looking to bury the guy. What’s done is done! I just want to find out his motivation and what he thinks about his actions now and how they’ve affected his life. Does he regret what he did and would he like to apologize to anybody? I found it very interesting to see the guys’ reactions to Bentley, as they didn’t really see or hear anything just like Ashley while he was actually on the show. They found out like everybody else while they watched it unfold week after week on TV. READ FULL STORY »

'The Bachelorette' season finale: Depressed about it? Cheer up with this clip of Harrison wearing the mask!

Well rose lovers, I think we all saw that coming, didn’t we? If you’ve seen tonight’s finale — and for the love of God, SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t — post your thoughts about Ashley’s Mr. For the Next Six Months Right below. Stay tuned for my full TV recap later tonight. (UPDATE: The Bachelorette finale recap is live!) In the meantime, no matter how you feel about the ending to Ashley’s “journey,” do yourself a favor and click on the clip below — it’s an exclusive “alternate opening” to the new season of Bachelor Pad, which premieres next Monday with a three-hour hootenanny. Too bad ABC decided not to use it — I think if anyone can make the masked man look work, it’s Chris Harrison. (P.S. Don’t miss his behind-the scenes Bachelorette finale blog).

Summer Movie Body Count: 'Cowboys & Aliens' killing spree fueled by fashion

Cowboys-Aliens

Week 13 of EW’s 2011 Summer Movie Body Count continues with Cowboys & Aliens, in which Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford keep trying to avoid Olivia Wilde, but she’s always there; and also, there are aliens in the Old West.

I like magical things and accessorizing, so Cowboys & Aliens was the perfect movie for me to attend last night. My assignment was to tally how many people and aliens died on-screen for EW.com’s Summer Movie Body Count. Aside from some extreme close-ups of alien innards, the cinematic battlefield wasn’t nearly as gory as I’d expected. Imagine my surprise when it turned out that all Daniel Craig’s Jake Lonergan had to do in order to kill those totally-not-cute E.T.s was… [Warning: SPOILERS and EXCLUSIVE JEWELRY SCOOP ahead]

Leonardo DiCaprio is 'king of the world,' says Forbes

Leonardo DiCaprio once crowed that he was “the king of the world,” and the 36-year-old actor now has the bank account to back it up. The Inception star dislodged Pirates of the Caribbean icon Johnny Depp at the top of Forbes’ list of the highest-earning actors, with Adam Sandler, Will Smith, and Tom Hanks rounding out the top 5.

The magazine estimated that DiCaprio had earned $77 million in the 12-month period ending in May, an impressive tally for an actor not associated with a blockbuster movie franchise. In fact, there’s something strangely satisfying about DiCaprio and Depp ranking 1 and 2 on this type of list. Though they both certainly qualify as handsome Hollywood leading man, both men seemingly spurned the lure of instant stardom and opted for smaller, offbeat roles early in their careers. Each week, we invite our Twitter followers to share their 140-character reviews of the weekend’s big opening films in our EW Exit Poll. Almost all the chatter this week was about Crazy, Stupid, Love., and most of it was positive, including prerequisite shout-outs to Ryan Gosling’s crazy, stupid abs and much-loved girl of summer Emma Stone. This week’s winning submissions are after the jump.

Miley Cyrus gets inked for the gays, starts a Twitter war

Miley Cyrus has gone on record in support of gay rights in the past, but this time she went with a decidedly more permanent statement. Last Friday, the singer tweeted a photo of her new tattoo, an equal sign on her right ringer finger, with the caption “All LOVE is equal.” In a year where the “It Gets Better” videos have served as a very formal, very scripted (and, yes, very powerful) beacon of the gay rights landscape, Cyrus’s subtle nod is a quirky (and dare I even say refreshing?) political affirmation. If nothing else, she is, in her own way, breathing new life into the debate with the kind of nonchalance that only an 18-year-old can. Unfortunately for Miss Miley, announcing her new art didn’t turn out to be all peace, love, and rainbows.  READ FULL STORY »

'Crazy, Stupid, Love': How vocal was your crowd?

Crazy, Stupid, Love isn’t the kind of film you expect to have audience participation, but everyone I’ve talked to who also saw it over the weekend reports that their crowd was as audibly engaged as mine. SPOILER ALERT! MAJOR PLOT POINTS REVEALED! At my Saturday afternoon showing, the Sex and the City 2 style shot of stud Ryan Gosling eating his pizza and waiting for Steve Carell at the mall was met by the kind of laughter that makes you lean in to the person sitting next to you. When Carell came through the door at the bar after sleeping with Marisa Tomei, there was applause. Gosling telling Emma Stone that he seals the deal with women at his house by telling them he can do the lift from Dirty Dancing? Squealing. (It’s funny because it would work.) And Stone being revealed as Carell’s daughter? A collective gasp. (Though one of my friends said she assumed that from the trailer, I hadn’t.)

What moments got your audience going? I heard about a crowd clapping when Gosling took off his ring to have Carell’s back in the yard fight. I almost feel gypped!

Shark Week is well underway, rendering us incapable of talking about anything else besides Shark Week (not to mention royally screwing up our plans to go to the beach). But we still decided now would be as good a time as any to recall our favorite fearsome underwater beasts in pop culture — granted we haven’t seen Shark Night 3D yet, but we’re guessing those will be pretty jaw-esome as well. Check out our list below, and don’t forget to bring a swimming buddy!  READ FULL STORY »

'Say Anything' sequel: Cameron Crowe could envision one. Can you?

Over the weekend at the Television Critics Association press tour, writer-director Cameron Crowe — who was on hand to talk about his forthcoming Pearl Jam Twenty documentary, which will air on PBS Oct. 21 after a one-day theatrical release on Sept. 20 — was asked if he’d consider a sequel to his 1989 teen romantic comedy classic, Say Anything.

The short answer: Yes.

“It’s the only thing that I’ve written that I would consider doing that with,” Crowe said, according to HitFlix, indicating he could see John Cusack reprising the iconic Lloyd Dobler role. “I’ve thought about it from time to time and talked about it with John Cusack once and just said this is the only story that I kind of think there might be another chapter to that at some point.” READ FULL STORY »
