'Step By Step': Remembering the TGIF mainstay, and its increasingly attractive cast

step_320.jpg

As a young teenager, I tuned into Step By Step every single week. And when the series — a 1990s version of The Brady Bunch — became syndicated, I watched the show every single day after I returned from school. But despite having dedicated countless hours of my life to the Lambert-Fosters, I must admit: With the exception of a fuzzy memory involving Carol’s beauty salon being burned down, I cannot recall one single episode of Step By Step.

Now, that’s not to say I don’t remember the Lambert-Fosters. Rather, I spent far too much time thinking about the fictional family. Yes, Carol (Suzanne Somers) and Frank (Patrick Duffy) were great headliners for the series, but for any fan of ABC’s TGIF, Step By Step was all about the kids. And I desperately wanted to be Dana (Staci Keanan). READ FULL STORY »

The 2011 EWwy Awards: Who should win Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy?

The supporting actress comedy pool was just as competitive as its dude counterpart for this year’s EWwy Awards. So many funny female characters help set the tones of their whole show, whether unassumingly (Aubrey Plaza in Parks and Rec) or obviously (Busy Philipps in Cougar Town). By the power vested in us by Annie’s Boobs (ewwww – that’s weird for me to write), we reluctantly narrowed the field to six. Watch them below, then flip through all of this year’s EWwy nominees in our photo gallery. READ FULL STORY »

James Franco leaves Broadway's 'Sweet Bird of Youth'

I suppose it was just one project too many for James Franco: The increasingly busy actor, who just finished marketing a starring turn in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and is currently filming 2013′s Oz: The Great and Powerful, will no longer be making his Broadway debut in Sweet Bird of Youth. The actor had planned to appear in the Tennessee Williams play, which follows a gigolo who romances an aging actress to get into show business. Nicole Kidman is still starring in the production.

No word on whether he’ll still have time to play Carlos the Dwarf during the next Dungeons & Dragons meeting. Yes, I’m still hanging on to Freaks & Geeks.

Angelina Jolie talks secret wedding, adoption and her first time directing to 'Vanity Fair'

In the October issue of Vanity Fair, Angelina Jolie, who graces the cover, says some things that will, no doubt, gain a lot of attention. From the rumored seeeeeecret wedding to longtime partner Brad Pitt (“[There's] no secret wedding”) to plans on expanding their brood (“I’m not pregnant. I’m not adopting at the moment”) to Brad’s reaction after reading her script (“He called and said, ‘You know, honey, it’s not that bad’”) and his feelings on how she’ll be as a director (“Brad thinks I’m going to be a nightmare”), Jolie’s refreshingly honest quotes always grab the public’s interest.

But there was another thing in particular that Jolie told VF that caught our attention: She doesn’t watch TV! READ FULL STORY »

Broadway box office update: Summer’s Winners and Losers

The Great White Way grossed over $204 million this summer. Who got the lot of it? Who lost out? And what does it all mean?

• Usual suspects Wicked and The Lion King are the season’s big earners, taking in $19.6 million and $19.2 million, respectively. Yet the remaining top three spots belong to newcomers Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark (17.6 million), The Book of Mormon ($13.3 million), and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying ($12.1 million).

Spider-Man may be doing well, but its reported $1.2 million nut (the overhead cost to run the show every week) will be tough for the production to crack, as it only earned an average $1.6 million per week since mid June.  READ FULL STORY »

Rush Limbaugh says Obama hoped for greater hurricane disaster

As many as 40 people were killed by Mother Nature and in accidents related to Hurricane Irene, and more than 8 million lost power during the storm that flooded areas of the East Coast, but there was nevertheless a great sigh of relief that the damage wasn’t as massive as initially feared. Rush Limbaugh, however, thinks that President Obama is disappointed that Irene didn’t cause more havoc. On Monday’s radio show, the conservative pundit lambasted the media for inflating the threat of the storm — a reasonably fair criticism with the benefit of hindsight — but he went on to accuse the president of craven opportunism. “I’ll guarantee you Obama was hoping this was going to be a disaster as another excuse for his failing economy,” he said. “If he’s out there blaming tsunamis, if he’s blaming earthquakes, and whatever natural disasters there are, this one was made to order, but it just didn’t measure up.” MediaMatters has the short clip below: READ FULL STORY »

Katt Williams unleashes on heckler during Phoenix show

On a sliding scale of Chappelle to Richards, where does Katt Williams stand? The fiery funnyman has become the latest in a string of comedians to make headlines for combative onstage antics. At a performance in Phoenix on Saturday, Williams fought back against a heckler, who was of Mexican descent, by launching into an aggressive diatribe. Shouting “USA! USA!” sporadically, Williams asked the heckler, “Do you remember when white people used to say go back to Africa? And we’d have to tell them we don’t want to? So if you love Mexico, b—-, get the f—over there!” He then began singing the “Star Spangled Banner” before saying, “It’s not even racial — you’re a b—! I don’t give a f— what race that is, that [guy]‘s a p—-.” At the time of this posting, Williams’ representation was unable to comment on the incident. See the rest of Williams’ comments in the NFSW video after the jump. UPDATE: Williams has spoken out about the incident: “My remarks were not meant to be offensive,” he said. “I want to apologize if my comedy act was taken out of context.” He added, “I sincerely appreciate my fans within the Mexican community and would never intentionally go out of my way to offend them.”

How 'The Secret World of Alex Mack' anticipated everything from 'Buffy' to 'Harry Potter'

It’s not that I don’t understand all the love for Clarissa Explains It All. Melissa Joan Hart’s Clarissa was simultaneously a smarmy misfit and a lovable everykid; in some ways, she resembles an almost perfect combination of Linus and Lucy from Peanuts. But when I cast my mind back to my SNICK days, my heart will always belong to that other proto-hipster faintly-tomboyish cool Nick chick. I’m speaking, of course, of Larisa Oleynik’s Alex Mack, star of The Secret World of Alex Mack. READ FULL STORY »
