Has anyone EVER liked a disco routine on 'SYTYCD'?

Melanie and Marko’s stilted disco routine on last night’s So You Think You Can Dance performance finale really bummed me out. “Oh nooooooooo. DISCO,” I shuddered. I’d forgotten all about it. Must disco still exist? For contestants looking to gain last-minute momentum, the disco seems as death-kissy as the dreaded foxtrot or, God forbid, a Russian nesting doll dance or whatever. “Has anyone EVER liked a disco routine on #SYTYCD? Die die die!” I tweeted feverishly, for I had just scraped up the last of my spicy gouda party spread directly from a small stone plate with my teeth.

Thanks to some of my loyal Twitter pals for reminding me of former disco fabulousness and proving me wrong! READ FULL STORY »

Roseanne Barr is going to have an awfully busy year ahead of her. In addition to running for president of the United States of America and maintaining all the upkeep that comes with running a macadamia nut farm, the Emmy-winning actress/comedienne is also finally making her long-anticipated return to prime-time television.

20th Century Fox Television confirmed to EW that Barr has a deal in place for a new sitcom called Downwardly Mobile, which she will write and star in. Barr will work with her longtime boyfriend Johnny Argent on the project, as well as Roseanne’s Nuts executive producer Steven Greener, who will hold the same title for this series. READ FULL STORY »

'Rugrats': Were you a Tommy or a Chuckie?

Rugrats

I’m a Chuckie. There. I said it. It’s taken me a long time to come to terms with this, but the character I always identified with most on Nickelodeon’s Rugrats was Chuckie Finster, the nervous, eternally put-upon baby with the bright red mop top and the thick glasses. Chuckie was the doubter, the overthinker, the kid who would sigh and say “I triiiiied” in that tonsillitis-y whine of his.  If seven of the show’s babies were going to jump over a puddle and one was going to fall in, Chuckie would be the kid who ended up with the wet shorts.

Of course, back when I was watching the show in the 90s, I told myself a different story. READ FULL STORY »

Gotta get down on Wednesday? Rebecca Black conquers midweek primetime TV

It all started with a viral music video. “Friday” — ever heard it?

It produced an avalanche of Internet attention, and over the next five months, singer Rebecca Black became the constant target of vicious bullying, death threats, hate mail, and even CNN-reported pregnancy rumors. Then she emerged relatively unscathed, made friends with Katy Perry, went back into the studio to record a second song… and turned 14.

Two prime-time TV appearances last night — a taped interview on ABC’s Nightline and a live performance on America’s Got Talent — showed that the teen phenom, if slightly unaware at times, is nothing if not resilient.

Last night on Nightline segment with the alarming title “Rebecca Black: Dark Side Of Fame,” Black revealed that she has recently switched to home schooling after constant bullying at her school became too much for her to handle. “When I walk by, they’ll start singing ‘Friday’ in a really nasally voice,” Black said. “Or they’ll be like, ‘Hey, Rebecca! Guess what day it is!’”

Still, Black soldiers on: ”I’ve had a lot of experience with not being liked,” she said. “You just can’t let it get to you.”

Footage from the interview showed Black signing autographs, taking photos with fans, and even talking openly in her bedroom about the varied types of cyber-bullying and hate mail she receives. Black and her mother both spoke candidly at their home in California about her career and how her home life has changed since that fateful “Friday” — which served as a startling reminder that, international pariah or not, she’s still a sensitive, precocious kid fresh out of seventh grade.

Black also made a live appearance on America’s Got Talent, where, after opening with a subtle nod to her second single, “My Moment,” she performed “Friday.” With the AutoTune off and the high-contrast video editing subtracted, Black looked and sounded refreshingly like a friendly teenager having a good time:

Tell us your reactions, PopWatchers: After watching Rebecca Black be a kid and be a star on her separate TV appearances last night, do you think she deserves all that negativity?

America has spoken: Casey Anthony and 'Octomom' top the 'Most Hated' list -- but who lands the top spot?

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Two questionable mothers walk into a poll… In a survey of who has incurred the most rancor of the American public, Casey Anthony won the dubious honor of “The Most Hated Person in America.” Nadya “Octomom” Suleman came in a disrespectable third place. See who else made the list after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Sondheim's 'Porgy and Bess' slam: Producers respond

Filed under: News and tagged:

Broadway’s upcoming revival of the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess — featuring a new ending and fleshed out backstories for the characters — already has one vocal critic: Stephen Sondheim. On Tuesday, the New York Times received a letter from the legendary composer-lyricist, in which he bashes the new production’s plans for revamping the classic show. “[T]here is a difference between reinterpretation and wholesale rewriting,” wrote Sondheim, who added that the new work should call itself Diane Paulus’s Porgy and Bess, after its new director, instead of its current title, The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess. (Sondheim also noted that this title negates the role of librettist and lyricist DuBose Heyward.)

The producers of the new show aren’t staying quiet. READ FULL STORY »

Did the Smurfs wreck the stock market? (Hey, they ARE socialists...)

It is a well-known fact that the Smurfs — the fondly-remembered cartoon characters who have now become miserably adored movie stars — are the last truly Communist society in the world. Each Smurf has a profession that defines them completely. They don’t have names, but rather, identifiers of their social utility (Handy Smurf, Architect Smurf, Baker Smurf, Finance Smurf.) There is no Smurf currency, but all their needs are provided for. Papa Smurf is both a leader and a teacher, just like Lenin, and has a beard, just like Lenin. Seriously, compared to the Smurfs, so-called Communist nations like China and Cuba look like freaking free market utopias. READ FULL STORY »

Melanie LaPatin on 'So You Think You Can Dance': And the winner SHOULD BE...

Melanie_LaPatin_SYTYCD

Seriously? That’s it? It’s over? This is my last SYTYCD blog for EW.com? I feel like I blinked and missed half of it. (I was probably on a plane.)

All kidding aside, before we dive into our discussion of last night’s performances, I hope you’ll indulge me while I say thank you for coming along for this wild ride, for sharing your thoughts and letting me share mine, and for all the nice notes and comments and questions you’ve sent. You made me feel very welcome, and this whole thing has been a blast for me!

Gosh, I hope you’ve enjoyed it, too.

If you’d like to keep in touch, or keep up with what I’m up to, my Facebook page is a good place to start,  or the page for my album, Ballroom Remixed (which has RE-remixes coming out next month), or if you’re in New York or passing through, you can always book a lesson at the studio. And if you REALLY find you miss me tomorrow and need a fix — yeah, yeah, I know you’re probably sick of me by now! — I can’t recommend highly enough that you check out Alan Mercer’s blog: His pictures of me are so good, I can’t believe they actually ARE me. (He also has the scoop on the new movie I’m working on. Hint: Cameron Diaz and Matthew Morrison are in it.)

Now then, about last night… READ FULL STORY »

George Lopez jokes while Conan mourns cancellation

George Lopez faced his audience last night for the first time since TBS announced that Thursday’s show will be his final episode. The audience booed after Lopez shared the sad news, but chuckles won out after Lopez revealed his plans for the future. “Like every TV star before me, I’ma find some crack. I’ma get on the pipe!,” he joked, at Charlie Sheen’s expense. “Lose that unwanted 110 pounds I been trying to lose. But I’m taking it good, I’m straight, believe me. I’m fine. My goddesses… are a wreck. They left me. I’m a losing teeth.” Watch the clip here or below. READ FULL STORY »

Military band's 'Rolling in the Deep' cover sure beats those annoying techno remixes

Am I right or am I really right? I am normally something of a remix queen, but some of those radio remixes of “Rolling in the Deep” make me die inside. Like, way to not get the point of Adele. READ FULL STORY »
