Hillside 101: 15 lessons from 'Fifteen' now and then

Fifteen-Ryan-Reynolds-Hill

When Fifteen (known in its native Canada as Hillside) hit Nickelodeon’s airwaves in 1990, I was all agog to learn the ropes of adolescence before the real deal came along. From the minute that killer synthesized credit sequence came on, I was hooked on this 30-minute textbook of teenage life that addressed tough-as-nails issues like divorce, alcoholism, and the shark-infested waters of teen dating. (Remember, we didn’t have Degrassi: The Next Generation back then — though its forebear Degrassi Junior High was a nice companion piece for Fifteen).

So what did I learn about almost-adulthood from Fifteen? How well have those lessons held up? And how does Ryan Reynolds factor in? Click through for the 15 takeaways my seven-year-old mind learned from  Dylan, Billy, Matt, Ashley, Brooke, and the gang; plus how they stacked up against my real world experience nearly 20 years later. Dance party on 'Rizzoli & Isles' set for Angie Harmon's birthday: Watch!

I love me some Rizzoli & Isles, and if you’re wondering whether the chemistry between stars Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander is as good offscreen as on, watch the video below of them dancing their way out of the makeup trailer and into Isles’ autopsy room in honor of Harmon’s birthday earlier this week. The three-minute video was shot by the show’s hair stylist Nanci Cascio, who also captured Harmon leading a dance party in the trailer at the end of July. (“How long is this f—in’ song,” her costar Bruce McGill asked waiting his turn in the chair. Hilarious.) Watch that below as well.

What I love most about these videos, besides the fact that in them both Harmon and Alexander are great dancers and don’t take themselves too seriously, is that they weren’t created for marketing purposes. The joy is too genuine for that. And to reward them, I’ll plug the show: Rizzoli & Isles airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET on TNT.  READ FULL STORY »

Conan O'Brien and Jesse Eisenberg have a Self-Efface-Off. Watch now...or don't, it's cool, they don't mind.

Aww, Jesse Eisenberg. Does your adorable awkwardness know no bounds?

Apparently not, as he competed with Conan O’Brien to decide, once and for all, which one of them is the most meek celebrity in all the land during the first — and last — ever Self-Efface-Off. My money was on Eisenberg going into the event (see: every interview he’s ever done), and things were looking good for the 30 Minutes or Less star right out of the gate. Before the game even started, Coco asked Eisenberg, “Are you ready to do this?” to which he sheepishly replied, “Probably not.” Watch the entire clip below, as Eisenberg and O’Brien field even tougher questions like “What do you think women like about you most?” and the dreaded “How are you?” and find out who the, er–winner?–was.

Who do you think should have won the Self-Efface-Off on Conan, PopWatchers? Now let’s all go give Jesse Eisenberg a great big hug, shall we?

Corey Feldman claims pedophilia top danger for child stars, but won't name names?

Filed under: Movies, Television, TV and tagged: ,

Sitting with Nightline for an interview that aired earlier this week, Corey Feldman made some heartbreaking allegations about pedophilia being the No. 1 problem facing child actors in Hollywood, including claiming its impact on his late friend Corey Haim’s addictions. “There’s one person to blame in the death of Corey Haim. And that person happens to be a Hollywood mogul. And that person needs to be exposed, but unfortunately, I can’t be the one to do it,” Feldman said. Watch his interview below. READ FULL STORY »

Harry Connick Jr. talks American Girl song collaboration with daughter, opening of Ellis Marsalis Center for Music in New Orleans

Harry-Kate_320.jpg

Harry Connick Jr.’s name is pretty much synonymous with his hometown New Orleans, which is why American Girl, the popular doll and book series now celebrating its 25th anniversary, reached out to him to pen the first original tune associated with the brand. “A Lot Like Me” is inspired by American Girl’s two new colorblind characters from 1850s New Orleans, Cécile and Marie-Grace. Even better, Connick’s 13-year-old daughter Kate sings the song, which is available exclusively on iTunes, and all proceeds from downloads go to benefit the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music, which opens Aug. 25 in the New Orleans Habitat Musicians’ Village, the community conceived by Connick and Branford Marsalis post-Katrina to house the artists who have defined the city’s culture and pass along its musical heritage to the next generation. Stephen Colbert PAC commercials target Texas gov Rick Perry

With James Brolin from The West Wing Texas governor Rick Perry poised to enter the Republican presidential race tomorrow — the same day as the important Ames Straw Poll in Iowa — he already has more to worry about than Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann, and other rival candidates. He has to worry about Rick Parry. Though Perry isn’t officially on the ballot tomorrow, his supporters are encouraging voters to write-in his name as their top choice. Not so fast, says Stephen Colbert’s ColbertSuperPAC. The semi-serious political action committee takes umbrage with out-of-state carpetbaggers with their bags of carpets telling Iowans who to vote for, and it is fighting fire with fire extinguishers. Vote for Rick Parry tomorrow — “That’s Parry with an A for America, with an A for Iowa.” Watch the recent ads. READ FULL STORY »

Watch out Book of Mormon, there’s about to be a hot new ticket in town: An A-list production of Arthur Miller’s classic American tragedy Death of a Salesman is headed to the Great White Way.

Scott Rudin‘s reps confirmed to EW that the Oscar-winner (No Country For Old Men) will produce the latest revival of Salesman. (Deadline first reported the news.) If Rudin’s recent track record weren’t enough (he’s one of the producers of the Tony-winning smash, the aforementioned Book of Mormon), the play will star none other than Philip Seymour Hoffman as the tragic figure Willy Loman and Andrew Garfield, who will be making his Broadway debut, as his troubled son Biff. The show, which is slated to open at New York City’s Ethel Barrymore Theater in the spring, will be directed by Mike Nichols. In other words, you’d better start lining up at TKTS now. The stars turned out for last night’s Los Angeles premiere of Conan The Barbarian. Unfortunately for the ladies involved, studly lead Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) kept his six-hour (a day!) physique under a well-tailored three-piece suit as he escorted his partner Lisa Bonet and Bonet’s daughter Zoe Kravitz into the premiere.

At least we can always count on Rose McGowan to keep it interesting. The actress, who recently told the Advocate that she was raised by drag queens, shared a few pecks with her handsome costar as she sauntered down the carpet in mermaid-like ombre sequin number. For those of you looking for behind-the-scenes info, director Marcus Nispel revealed that Momoa brought his own sword to the audition. Well done! READ FULL STORY »

'Hey Dude': How would you rate the Bar None Ranch on TripAdvisor?

Hey-Dude-show

Now that you’ve had plenty of time to fully come to terms with which side of the Tommy/Chuckie Rugrats spectrum you fall on (don’t worry, Adam, I’m a Chuckie, too), it’s time to look in the nostalgic mirror once more and reflect: Would you still want to stay at the Bar None Ranch from Hey Dude?

Because, let’s face it, if you watched Nickelodeon as a youth, you either wanted to spend your summers at the Bar None Ranch, Camp Anawanna, or playing a warped version of Field Day with Omar Gooding (you, Wild and Crazy Kids, you!) Really, anywhere but your own actual summer camp or family vacation. So the staffers of the Bar None Ranch really had to earn their spurs (see what I did there?) to get us to start our horses and come along. Because, as the old saying goes, you can’t get a ride if you can’t hold on. READ FULL STORY »

George Lopez finale: 'You have just seen the baddest show in late night!'

Filed under: About Last Night, TV and tagged: ,

In his final show after being canceled by TBS, George Lopez wrapped himself in the warm embrace of his crowd and his celebrity guests. “Tonight is all about having fun with great friends,” said Lopez, as he welcomed Arsenio Hall, who joined Eva Longoria on the couch. Later, Lakers’ players Ron Artest (aka Metta World Peace) and Derek Fisher joined the party, as did guitarist Slash. Lopez shared some of his favorite moments in a video montage… READ FULL STORY »
