Michele Bachmann throws a surprise birthday party for Elvis

Filed under: News and tagged: ,

Tea Party favorite Michele Bachmann, who’s riding a wave of publicity after winning last weekend’s Ames Straw Poll in Iowa, has the unfortunate — for a politician, anyway — gift of gaffe. In June, while visiting Waterloo, Ia., she mistakenly claimed it was the birthplace of American icon John Wayne — when, in fact, it was actually the hometown of serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

Yesterday, she put her shoe in her mouth again — though this time, it may have been a blue suede shoe. “Before we get started, let’s all say ‘Happy Birthday’ to Elvis Presley today,” Bachmann told a crowd in Spartanburg, S.C. “We played you a little bit of ‘Promised Land’ when we pulled up. You can’t do better than Elvis Presley and we thought we would celebrate his birthday as we get started to celebrating Take Our Country Back tour.”

Of course, yesterday was the 34th anniversary of the King’s death, not his birthday. An honest mistake. Don’t be cruel to a heart that’s true. Take a look at the clip. READ FULL STORY »

'Hey Arnold': Who was your favorite supporting cast member?

Whether he was attempting to have a perfect Saturday, pining after a braces-sporting sixth-grader, wearing a checkered shirt that was so long it looked like a kilt, or leading protests against a greedy ice-cream man on the hottest day of the year, Arnold was, as his friend Gerald would say, a bold kid. But for all the love I have for this kid with a football shaped head, I have equally as much affection for the vast collection of kids and characters who stood by his side for four seasons.

Sure, his classmates and even the boarding house tenants didn’t get a huge amount of screentime, but they were, nonetheless, enjoyable additions. I didn’t remember this until I was re-watching “Heat/Snow” on Netflix yesterday in preparation for this trip down memory lane. (Also, am I the only one who completely forgot that this show had two segments per episode?) READ FULL STORY »

Anne Hathaway spits rhymes Lil Wayne-style on 'Conan'

Last night on Conan, Anne Hathaway proved she’s got Weezy’s swagger down pat (call her s–t Patricia?) by throwing down a rap about her frustration with the guerrilla cameramen stalking the Dark Knight Rises set in Pittsburgh.

“With all the stuff that’s been going on with Batman, the paparazzi attention’s been a little intense. So I actually wrote a rap song about it,” Hathaway told Conan O’Brien. “It’s in the style of Lil Wayne.”

Hathaway then proceeded to spit verses in true throaty, straight-faced Lil Wayne form — and then quickly snapped out of it, finishing off the performance with a dazzling smile and a ladylike giggle.

Has Anne got Tunechi’s raspy rattle mastered? Watch below and decide for yourself: READ FULL STORY »

Who's winning this 'X Factor' group balancing act?

x-factor-balancing-act.jpg

I know who you think it is, but check it out: Simon’s being grounded by three hands. I’ve been staring at this image long enough (minute and a half): It’s time to rank these bobbleheads in order of how well they could potentially hold themselves at a fully upright angle. Like, do or die: This is the order in which they would die.

5. Pixy Abdul-Stix

4. Gray suit

3. L.A. Reid

2. Simon Cowell

1. Nicole Stiltzinger

And she only needs one leg! The talent on The X Factor is looking fierce so far.

Hey, that’s not fair. Why would I dismiss perfectly pleasant and attractive host Steve Jones like that? Is it because he’s so tall and in my History of Current Reality Television textbook (which is actually just an endless series of Stickies on my computer), hosts are supposed to be short and bouncy? I think it’s that. Look at him. What is he looking at? Are his pointer and middle fingers about to take a walk somewhere? Is he going to tilt himself slightly like that the whole time?

Luckily I have an entire month and change to get over this super-serious pre-season vendetta against X Factor host Steve Jones.

Got any super-serious pre-season vendettas of your own? By all means, sway me.

Brooklyn movie theater offers gourmet meals. Should other cinemas follow suit?

Earlier this summer, my colleague Sandra Gonzalez aired her grievances about movie theater food smugglers and what constitutes as acceptable meal etiquette (candy, snacks) and what doesn’t (a cheeseburger). While the great smuggle debate still rages on, a movie theater in New York has made their stance on dinner and a movie clear: They go together like popcorn and soda. Except in this case, popcorn is deviled eggs and soda is sparkling wine. Bon appetit! READ FULL STORY »

The embarrassing clip reel every late-night talent booker should watch

It’s every actor’s nightmare — or at least 25 of them. Watch the video below to see 25 actors’ early, mostly embarrassing roles cut together in a three-minute torture reel. I would say Daniel Craig, Jennifer Aniston, Natalie Portman, and Arnold Schwarzenegger should be cringing. Also that Sarah Jessica Parker’s voice sounds exactly the same, and Sean Connery in Darby O’Gill and the Little People could have been the basis for hunky Gaston in Disney’s Beauty and the BeastREAD FULL STORY »

'Harry Potter and the Steamy Slow Jam' brings you Hogwarts a la Luther Vandross

Colloportus the door and nox the lights, Hermione. And if I were you, I’d muffliato the hallway, too — it’s about to get steamy in Gryffindor Tower.

Yep, file this one under Things Nobody Asked For: The Key of Awesome turns up the heat and the hormones at Hogwarts in an absurd new HP-themed music video on YouTube. Sexual tension abounds in the disturbingly sensual “Harry Potter and the Steamy Slow Jam” — first, predictably, between Hermione and Ron. “Girl, you’ve been givin’ me looks/For the last five books,” murmurs the youngest Weasley son to his lady, offering her another butterbeer and a furtive glance. Then Voldemort gets in on the action, making wand and snake jokes while appearing to need some privacy with Bellatrix Lestrange, and finally even Professor Dumbledore and Sirius Black are giving one another the come-hither stare.

So wrong it’s almost right? Watch the awkward sexual tension unfold here: READ FULL STORY »

'The Lying Game': Nina Dobrev's doppelganger stars in new, intriguing series. But is it as good as 'Pretty Little Liars'?

I’m a huge fan of the post-Pretty Little Liars direction ABC Family is headed in. That’s not to say I don’t appreciate the pure drama on Make It Or Break It. (Hey, it’s not cancelled yet. I can use present tense.) Or the campy corn served up on 10 Things I Hate About You. (R.I.P.) But The Lying Game, which premiered last night, is cut of the same Pretty cloth that has made me tune into the network more than ever.

The Lying Game, based off a book from Alloy (as is Liars), centers around identical twin sisters (both played by As the World Turns‘ Alexandra Chando) who were separated at birth and grew up with very different lives as a result. READ FULL STORY »

On anniversary of Elvis' death, the King lives on: What's your fave Elvis impersonator story?

Today marks the 34th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death. As we all know, the King remains with us in spirit — the spirit of Elvis impersonators world over. So, I ask: What’s your favorite Elvis impersonator encounter? I’ve enjoyed seeing Thai Elvis at Palms Thai Restaurant in L.A., and I’ve caught El Vez, the Mexican Elvis, on tour. But it’s the Little Elvis I stumbled upon playing the Monks Lounge at the Friar Tuck Inn in the Catskills in 2003, when I was staying there for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan convention, that I remember best. He wasn’t so much little as he was rotund, and though he sang, what I really recall is my friend Karen thinking a plate of cheese was for the whole bar and not just Little Elvis. “I didn’t mean to steal Little Elvis’ cheese,” she kept saying. I love sentences like that — ones no one has said before or since.

Your turn.

Britney Spears vs. Christina Aguilera: Who's the greater turn-of-the-millennium pop diva?

Britney or Christina? It’s a question that philosophers have been contemplating since approximately 5 A.D. (after Disney). One’s the ultimate American girl, the other’s multi-lingual and multi-talented. One’s got enormous popularity; the other’s got an enormous voice. One’s a blonde ex-Mouseketeer who was romantically linked to Fred Durst, the other’s… a blonde ex-Mouseketeer who was romantically linked to Fred Durst. How to choose? It was a tough debate for Leah Greenblatt and me. Check out our arguments below, and tell us what you think in the comments.

(This is part of an ongoing series of posts in which EW writers debate the most defining pop culture rivalries. Past subjects have included Schwarzenegger/Stallone, Godfather/Goodfellas, and the neverending boy-band battle between ‘N Sync and the Backstreet Boys. Come back here on Thursday for a duel over the relative greatness of Movies and Videogames, and then spin back here in one week for a cage match between The Simpsons and South Park to decide the great American animated comedy.)
