I suppose it was just one project too many for James Franco: The increasingly busy actor, who just finished marketing a starring turn in Rise of the Planet of the Apes and is currently filming 2013′s Oz: The Great and Powerful, will no longer be making his Broadway debut in Sweet Bird of Youth. The actor had planned to appear in the Tennessee Williams play, which follows a gigolo who romances an aging actress to get into show business. Nicole Kidman is still starring in the production.
No word on whether he’ll still have time to play Carlos the Dwarf during the next Dungeons & Dragons meeting. Yes, I’m still hanging on to Freaks & Geeks.

Good. I didn’t really like Franco in the role. Kidman otherwise, is perfect for. I really hope she’s still in.
Apart from the busy all the time aspect, I don’t get what the big deal is supposed to be about him. He’s not that handsome, not a compelling actor and seems like a smarmy jerk. I don’t get him.
Amen! I was thinking the same thing – he must have a great PR team because he is getting offers all over the place (movies, TV, Broadway, hosting Oscars) and I have no idea why. Plain looking at best. Oddball personality. Embarrassing effort at the Oscars. When he bombed there, I thought maybe the love fest would die down. Apparently not…
Not handsome? To each his own. I think he’s gorgeous. I’d love to see who you find attractive. I find his acting extremely compelling and have no idea what gave you the jerk vibe. He was not that terrible as the Oscar host. Anne Hathaway was much worse. Don’t understand what he did to deserve your disgust.

When he’s got some sleep and has a haircut he’s actually really beautiful. Unfortunately he doesnt put much effort into it. And he IS a good actor.
And he can’t write to save his life! Ever try to wade through any of his idiotic scribblings? If he were just anybody, those “books” would never see the light of day.
I hope he left so he would have time to return to his role on General Hospital for a longer run.
I think I read that he is returning to GH this Fall.
They announced he was coming back but then he said at the Planet of the Apes premier that he wasn’t and that he didn’t know how the story got out.
broadway would have been a better choice than GH. oh well hes stretching himself thin. I believe in education but how many degrees do you need. I get the feeling he likes to brag how great he is.
Geez, I just don’t get the Franco hate. With all the genuine jerks running around Hollywood (hello, Shia Laboeuf??) people want to put that label on Franco?? Is it sooo offensive to people’s fragile egos that he happens to be smart, talented, handsome and rich? Isn’t that ideal?
He’s said many times that he’s blessed to be able to study all the things that he’s interested in. It’s not vanity driving him.
I hope they reschedule the play so he can still do it.

I don’t really like James Franco, but not because he’s apparently a jerk. He’s just everywhere and it’s kind of annoying.
He’s a wunderkind, and in future years he’ll be a recluse with 10″ fingernails a la Howard Hughes.
It wasn’t a scheduling thing–he was fired because they realized they’d miscast him. He couldn’t pull it off. He’s fine in stoner comedies, but in Williams?! Um, no.
Why does James Franco have to be so annoying? Seriously. He’s getting like two Ph.Ds for no reason, started some stupid invisible art museum, and ruined the Oscars this year. I loved him in Spider-man and was rooting for him for a long time, but now he’s ruined it. Now I think, ‘thank god he’s not playing Wayne Chance in Sweet Bird of Youth.’ He would of ruined a good role and a good play.

James Franco cannot act on stage. He is not a theatre trained actor.
So I know lots of people who have gotten their PhDs (not me, which you can figure by my often idiotic comments on here). And they work their butts off for 5 years with little time to do anything else, let alone star in films and take 6 weeks here and there to appear on General Hospital (soap work can be pretty grueling). Is he really that much of a savant? I can hardly imagine anyone getting two PhDs simultaneously let alone working pretty much fulltime while doing it. (Unless these PhDs are really coming from the University of HUSTON and Sally Struthers is printing the degrees on her dot matrix.)
Most of his degrees are Bach or MS not PhDs, plus he stated in interviews that all his sceens for GH the past two times were filmed in 1 day.

Excellent news! After his Oscars fiasco, I think he would have ruined this play. I don’t think he has the discipline to be on stage, performing in front of an audience nearly every day for several months. He probably would have been high half of the time and make this play a disaster.
As long as Nicole Kidman doesn’t leave, I’m fine. She’s a great actress and I really want to see her on Broadway again.
I actually like James Franco and don’t find him as annoying as some of the actors out there. If I never read a thing about Tom Cruise again I’d be very happy.
Overrated. Appeals to the Gay Male and Teenage Female crowd. Harrison Ford and Tom Hanks are passe. Where is the next genuine Big Male Star?

But I completely agree with you about the Oscars… apparently, however stoned he appears, Franco says he doesn’t smoke pot… but he was still hardly there and looked like he’d rather be anywhere else. It was very unfair to Anne Hathaway.
