Jay-Z joins the proud papa pantheon, as we look back at other pop-culture pregnancy reactions

While it’s a pretty safe assumption that Jay-Z already knew his beloved was carrying his babeyonce (boy, that won’t get old during the next few months, will it?), his elated reaction to Beyonce’s pregnancy announcement during the VMAs was even better than ours. Watch the moment again (and again and again) below:

Of course, in addition to become a first-time beaming dad-to-be, Jay-Z has officially joined the pop-culture pregnancy reaction club. While Jay ranks high above Freaked Out New Dads (On The Simpsons, Homer learning about all three of his kids and thus ripping out all of his hair; Hugh Grant’s jerky reaction/general behavior in all of Nine Months, Steve Martin desperately trying to recapture his youth after he discovers he’s going to be a grand/father in Father of the Bride: Part II), he’s got some competition with equally Happy Parents like Juno‘s Fertile Myrtle miracle (the authentic and adorable reactions of hopeful adoptive mother-to-be Jennifer Garner) and Jim (a teary-eyed John Krasinski) and Pam finding out about their first, blissfully unexpected baby on The Office.

Here’s some other “I’m pregnant!” classics:

Ross flips out when he finds out he got Rachel pregnant on Friends. Definitely can’t use the “We were on a break” excuse anymore.

There’s a bevy of moments in 2007’s Knocked Up that gave us pregnant pause to pick our favorite (Seth Rogen’s Ben asking Alison if she’s pregnant “with emotion,” Jay Baruchel promising to “rear” said child), but we had to name youngsters Maude and Iris’ awesome reaction (not to mention medically accurate explanation as to where babies come from) to the news that won us over.

And, last, but certainly, not least, Booth telling Bones she is with child… and he is the father. We’re still beaming, too.

But tell us, PopWatchers, which pop-culture pregnancy reaction is your all-time favorite? Is it when Miranda suddenly dropped a bomb on Steve while getting ice cream on Sex and the City? Jenna’s (Keri Russell) dismayed discovery in Waitress? Or does Jay-Z simply trump them all now? Share your bundle of joyful responses in the comments section below.

That doctor on “House,” who found out he’d impregnated his estranged wife right after he’d impregnated the nurse. (And kudos to Beyonce – the lengths she’ll go to in playing the part of Jay-Z’s “beard”!)

Had to jump start those sagging record sales for that turkey of a record some how….

I hope he mans up and pays child support.

        I agree!!!

Nothing tops Lucy and Ricky on “I Love Lucy”. when he takes the audience request and then finds out it is he that is going to be the father. Classic.

    • DaDude

      Nice 60 yr old reference!

    • Samantha

I love this one too :)

Sorry DaDude, have to agree with Nessa, and Lucy is in re-runs everywhere all the time. The moment is so genuine, they of course, were married in real life. I cry every time I see it.

You just compared a real-life (or close enough) scenario with a bunch of fictional movie and TV reactions. I hope EW knows the difference!

I guess this isn’t a” favorite” reaction, but I remember dreading the son’s reaction when he found out on Everwood.

@Bimbo – I thought the same thing! Let’s compare apples to apples here. How does the Beyonce/JayZ baby news compare to say….the real Lucy & Ricky, Elvis & Priscilla and Brad & Angelina iconic couplings of the world? Or maybe it doesn’t at all and nobody will really care beyond how the news was announced.

  • Nessa

I thought of it in the context that both platforms were used to announce it to the world. A real life public couple using a medium to announce they are expecting. It’s more comparable than Ross and Rachel and alot more entertaining.

-The “I Love Lucy” moment is still absolutely perfect all these years later. So sweet and genuine, you get the feeling they didn’t have to try for their tears at all.
-Del-Boy on the British TV show “Only Fools and Horses.” The show had already been on ten years and the audience had never seen him QUITE like that, so giddy and overcome.
-And for something more modern (yes, I’m a sucker for these moments). Pete on “Mad Men”, both with Peggy and Trudy. The former is devastatingly sad and still one of the best moments on a show chock full of outstanding moments. And the latter, two seasons later, confirms Pete’s character progression that they’d been hinting at for a while, that he really is a decent, stand-up guy now. His joy was undeniable.
