Has anyone EVER liked a disco routine on 'SYTYCD'?

Melanie and Marko’s stilted disco routine on last night’s So You Think You Can Dance performance finale really bummed me out. “Oh nooooooooo. DISCO,” I shuddered. I’d forgotten all about it. Must disco still exist? For contestants looking to gain last-minute momentum, the disco seems as death-kissy as the dreaded foxtrot or, God forbid, a Russian nesting doll dance or whatever. “Has anyone EVER liked a disco routine on #SYTYCD? Die die die!” I tweeted feverishly, for I had just scraped up the last of my spicy gouda party spread directly from a small stone plate with my teeth.

Thanks to some of my loyal Twitter pals for reminding me of former disco fabulousness and proving me wrong!

Lauren, Danielle, Shelley, and Josh called out Janette and Brandon’s season 5 routine as “the high mark for disco on the show. YouTube it, I promise,” said Josh.

Check out the big brain on Josh!

Meanwhile, Jessica, Kassy, and Brett remembered Neil Haskell’s “pimpin’ blue suit” the best. Interesting: Not one of these three mentioned his season 3 disco partner. (It was Sara.)

And here’s Melanie and Marko from last night. I’m still so not into it, which sucks because I am very into both of them in general.

Do you want disco routines to stick around in future seasons, or are they getting to be too much of a downer/joke?

I say if they MUST drag it out next time, the least they could do is set that s— to Kylie Minogue’s “Your Disco Needs You.” I mean hello.

Agree that Jeanette and Brandon did disco right, but saying that “it was the high mark of disco on the show” is kind of like saying “‘The Usual Suspects’ is the high mark of Stephen Baldwin’s IMDb page”…

…I mean, what else are we comparing it to?

    • Hannah

Hilarious as always, Mr Holloway, good to see you again

Of course I agree with Janette and Brandon having the best disco, but I also enjoyed Sara and Neil’s disco. Other than those, I’m out.I am an Air Force and single at present .I need a woman who can love me back ..I also uploaded my hot photos on M’ilitaryloves .C óM under the name of cnuaw22..It’s the largest and best club for seeking Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force, Police Force, and the admirers of those who wear the uniform.I just hope you don’t mind me being a soldier …Please Check it out!I’m serious.

I wanted to reply to this article but after seeing Mr. Holloway’s reply, I’ve determined that I couldn’t have said it better. Thanks Mr. Holloway!

Agree – Jeanette & Brandon’s disco was good because that woman could sell ANYTHING. But it’s a low bar we’re talking about here.

    • kate middleton

Janette and Brandon’s was freaking awesome. SO FAST. But I agree that it far exceeds all other disco routines on the show.

  • Sven

As I wrote already on the show recap, Disco.Must.Die.

  • katie

i love disco! i’ve been waiting all season for some disco (or anything beside all comtemporary/hip hop). last nights sucked! imagine if they had done it earlier with caitlyn :)

  • Tonic

I LOVED the disco routine last night.

  • RyRyNYC

OMG – I live for the disco numbers on this show – they are friggin’ CRAZY… was sooo disappointed last week when I realized we were at the end of the season with NO DISCO… so glad it made the finally.

  • jj

I’ve always loved jeannete. I loved that number even more the first time when she slipped but was still right on que for the next line. Neal was always good but other than that flip, I really didn’t appreciate it all that much.

  • Danielle

Omg I’m like so famous for being mentioned in this article :-)

    • Jessica

Danielle, I feel the same way!

Annie- we didn’t mention Sara because Neil is just so dreamy, he makes the routine.

disco should be reserved for All-Star/competitor routines. This would ensure that the girl all star is small enough for the guy competitor to lift or that the guy all star is strong enough to do lifts w/ girl competitor.
This will prevent unfortunate dances like Melanie/Marko catastrophes (love them both – but it was straight up horrible and Melanie knew it b/c “this sucks” was written all over her face”)

    • justjack

I loved Sara. I wish they’d bring her back as an all-star.

      • KC

        me too!

  • Diana @somebodyhealme

I haven’t enjoyed any of them except Neil & Sara. Last night’s disco routine was painful. Those lifts were awful and looked way too hard. They should be effortless. I usually don’t care for Doriana’s music selection, either.

    • Call me Daphne

It was the music — it was more a funeral dirge than a dance song.

  • Kari

How about the original fabulous disco routine in Season 1 with Nick and Melody? That was the highest bar set until Brandon and Janette came along. The fact that Nick and Melody danced to “Mightly Real” made it even more awesome.

    • Alli

Totally agree!!!!! Nick and Melody rocked Disco- they even preformed it on Ellen!!!

    • Kari

Sorry Kamilah and Nick. Melody and Nick did performed a disco routine to “Knock on Wood” that year but it wasn’t very good.

      • Jen

Neil and Sara danced to Knock on Wood in S3 and it was awesome.

  • Emma

There’s only one Disco routine I’ve ever really enjoyed and it was actually on Season 1 of So You Think You Can Dance Canada – it was Nico (who won) and Natalli dancing to Ami Stewart’s “Knock on Wood”. The choreography was FANTASTIC…and it’s stuck with me ever since.

    • Elisa

Canada has pretty consistent good disco. I can’t believe I wrote that. Vincent and Arassay had a good one to Katy Perry’s Hot and Cold. And a couple of weeks ago Lindsay and Shane had a pretty good one, too. Important thing: in Canada, it doesn’t seem to be all about the lifts. That makes a huge difference, I think.

    • Jen

There was also one last season -Jeff and Charlene I believe -where he did this cray lift where he spun around with her across his neck. The American choreographer puts in too many lifts. The dancers look strained and the routines lack flow.

    • Yeah_Canada

Actually SYTYCD Canada seems to be better at the alternative dances altogether: Disco, Afro-jazz, Capoeta. You could learn from us, Yankees!

  • Jeff

Brandon also had a disco with Kayla in Season 5 that didn’t suck. Of course, the fact that the bar for excellence here is “didn’t suck” speaks to the point pretty well.

  • Fog cue

Isn’t disco pretty much ballroom to 4/4 music?

    • Squishmar

That, and the fact that the sparkly/glittery/fringy costumes are made of polyester and even tackier looking.

  • jd

Sabra and Dominic did a disco that was tolerable

    • D

Yes, I had forgotten about that one!
