When it was announced back in May that Jane Lynch would be hosting the 63rd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards (airing Sept. 18), we pondered how much of the show would be her and how much would be her pop culture alter ego, as Sue Sylvester on Glee. After all, putting on that red track suit and firing off one-liners that could make Don Rickles blush helped propel Lynch from cult comedy mainstay to an Emmy winner last year. On one hand, we liked the idea of a visit to “Sue’s Corner” or Sylvester-style barbs aimed at her younger co-stars or Matthew Morrison’s hair, but on the other, we like Lynch. Just as she is.
For those worried that there would be too much Glee/Sue Sylvester influence, however, rest easy: Lynch has no plans to overdo it as McKinley’s success-craving cheer leading coach. In a recent interview with The Los Angeles Times, the 51-year-old actress said, “It’s definitely going to be more me than Sue Sylvester. In fact, if Sue were hosting, I don’t think many people would watch it, because a little of Sue goes a long way.” Valid point, and an especially smart move considering the recent wave of Glee backlash.
That said, it wouldn’t be the worst thing for Lynch to break out some of her other classic characters. We already suggested some catering courtesy of Constance Carmell and the rest of the Party Down crew, but since the Emmys are technically the Best in Show(s), would a visit from Christy Cummings be entirely out of the question? Wouldn’t it be worth enduring haunted dreams to watch Lynch uncomfortably hit on The Office nominee Steve Carell like she did as his boss Paula in The 40-Year-Old-Virgin? (She’s very discreet.)
Then again, she could just take a similar approach to last year’s host Jimmy Fallon (maybe minus the Glee-like opening musical number), who she praised to the Los Angeles Times for having “the right mix of sarcasm and good-heartedness.” Hmm, that sounds an awful lot like Jane Lynch to us.
Are you relieved to hear that Jane Lynch won’t do much of the Emmys show as Sue Sylvester, PopWatcers, or disappointed? Do you think she should break out some of her other iconic characters from television and movies or just be herself?

As long as we don’t get an opening montage of SS showing up in different shows, it will be fine. But I have a feeling that’s exactly what it will be.
Jane Lynch is a comic actress who shouldn’t be expected to play only the role for which she is currently best known. Why pigeon-hole her as Sue Sylvester? This is the Emmys telecast, not just a Glee episode. She could even give a glimpse of her occasional role on Two and A Half Men as Charlie Harper’s psychologist or psychiatrist. Whatever role she decides to take on for this telecast or if she decides to be simply Jane Lynch, she’s an entertainer, and I’m looking forward to watching at least part of the show.
I like her as Constance from Party Down.
How about she reprises her role from Two and A Half Men as Charlie’s psychiatrist and makes some jokes about that?
One Sue scene is fine.

RELIEVED! It would be a colossal mistake for her to overdo the Sue Sylvester thing, especially with Glee suffering from overkill and backlash. The hosting gig is a perfect opportunity for her to really go in different directions and show how funny she is.
Jane Lynch is just too awesome at everything she does to only do one character -I mean she even rocks her occasional role as Spencer’s mom on “Criminal Minds.”
