Why do we care if Perry White is black?

Perry White and Spider-Man are both black now. Well, kind of. Read the full post.

Not to mention, where do they find these writers? Jesus, the writer sounded like a bigot that just wanted to make anyone who disagreed with Hollywood taking characters they love and changing them, regardless of his minimal brain capacity there are people who love the character Perry White and want him to be accurately portrayed in the film. I guess if you are someone who is slightly let down that they cast a black man in a white role then you are a racist super geek that obsesses over minor details, at least that is the way this nitwit makes it sound.

You had me until you said “Beyonce.” She can’t act!

My first reaction to the news that Laurence Fishburne was cast was “Hey, he’s a great actor and will probably do a great job.” The fact that he’s black was secondary. That being said I’ve been looking around at comments a bit and find a few things disturbing.

First there are the obvious racists that won’t accept a black man in any role. These I dismiss out of hand.

Second, I see a lot of people imputing racism to fans who simply don’t like seeing an iconic character changed for political correctness. Perry has been around nearly as long as Superman himself. He has always been a white character and in the 80′s comic series there was a storyline about him being accused of racist hiring practices. Tough to pull that one off with a black Perry White.

Third, it seems that if you are Black and proud of it that’s cool. If you are Hispanic and proud of it great. But if you’re White and proud to be white. RACIST! Why should white people have to see beloved characters changed but anytime it’s suggested that a black character could be played by a white man it just couldn’t happen because their color is “integral to their character.” If you want a more colorful superhero universe go make one! Personally I loved Hancock. Great character and they didn’t have to steal someone else’s character to do it.

From a literary point of view, it doesn’t matter if the character is black or white. This isn’t political correctness, or at least the Perry White thing. I’m a DC guy, and I could actually care less if Spider-man was played by a unicorn with a German accent. Actually…that might be kind of cool. In reality, Fishburne is perfect for the part. The fact that he’s black shouldn’t really come into play. As long as people say, “Why was that guy selected? He’s black/whatever color” and then say that it’s all because of political correctness rather than a calculated decision someone made about where to take the character, we still know racism, however latent, exists.

I agree racism still exists. I disagree with where the source of most racism in the US is these days. Take our president for example. He was elected my a majority of the voters. That means he got a lot of white votes. When some of those voters are unhappy with the direction he has taken the country over the last couple of years their criticism is called racist because he is black. It doesn’t matter that they didn’t care he was black when they voted for him. If you criticize someone of color or a decision that can be perceived as based on color then you are called a racist. The people keeping “racism” alive in this nation aren’t the backwater hillbilly bigots and racists. It’s the race baiting community involved in politics. The same attitude can be seen throughout this blog.

If you don’t like the change, don’t go see the movie! End of story. As for Cleopatra not being Black, I have a hard time believing dark-skinned Egyptians were ruled by fair-skinned White woman. She was of Greek origin but that doesn’t mean she was WHITE.

    • JTnek

So if someone has an opinion that differs with yours they shouldn’t see the movie. Nice and open minded.
I seem to remember a history of African nations being ruled by white’s. Doesn’t mean she was but Greek origin seems to mean NOT EGYPTIAN. Let’s not rewrite history to suit PC.

Uhh last time I checked the Egyptians were black but in almost every American remake of the Egyptians history through Hollywood, they make them white. Countless text and hieroglyphs show that the people were black so why aren’t the characters in Holllywood movies black? And this isn’t fiction, it’s non-fiction. I just think that some white people find it impossible for black people to be of great power and intellect. But hey can’t get rid of all ignorance in the world.

  • Gmoney

Oh and cleopatra was Greek. She was from the Ptolemy family which were an inbreeding Greek family. They ruled Egypt at the end of it’s major world influence which began after Alexander the greats invasion. Now were they completely Caucasian, doubt it. Greece, Rome, Turkey and many other countries in that area of Europe were invaded and integrated many times over by northern Africans and Middle Easterns long before alexander the great came around. Besides that seems to be the only character they have correct in those movies cause even Moses looks white and I could have sworn he was from the Middle East.

The problem isn’t that the changed him from white to black. The problem is, if the opposite happened, there would be riots and the film industry would be called racist.
