'Crazy, Stupid, Love': How vocal was your crowd?

Crazy, Stupid, Love isn’t the kind of film you expect to have audience participation, but everyone I’ve talked to who also saw it over the weekend reports that their crowd was as audibly engaged as mine. SPOILER ALERT! MAJOR PLOT POINTS REVEALED! At my Saturday afternoon showing, the Sex and the City 2 style shot of stud Ryan Gosling eating his pizza and waiting for Steve Carell at the mall was met by the kind of laughter that makes you lean in to the person sitting next to you. When Carell came through the door at the bar after sleeping with Marisa Tomei, there was applause. Gosling telling Emma Stone that he seals the deal with women at his house by telling them he can do the lift from Dirty Dancing? Squealing. (It’s funny because it would work.) And Stone being revealed as Carell’s daughter? A collective gasp. (Though one of my friends said she assumed that from the trailer, I hadn’t.)

What moments got your audience going? I heard about a crowd clapping when Gosling took off his ring to have Carell’s back in the yard fight. I almost feel gypped!

The crowd I saw it with GASPED when steve carrell got the 800 dollar bar bill from that slow mo waitress.

    • Sighs

I think every woman in the (mostly full) theatre had either a major sigh or moan when we first saw Ryan Gosling without his clothes.

  • Skiny Pete

I gasped when I saw this was an actual article…and I actually liked the movie.

  • Marion

The crowd laughed every time the Ryan Gosling strutted into the club with the banging music playing. I loved this film, the best feel-good, romantic movie I’ve seen in a while.

the funny part is that after the director yelled cut, gosling prolly spit out the pizza and did 200 push ups just to be safe.

    • ryna12

More realistic, since Ryan is a professional… Pizza was most likely Vegan. Still hot tho!! :)

Our audience began to giggle when they realized the “mall” where Ryan Gosling was munching on pizza and waiting for Steve Carell, was actually the mall we were all at to watch this movie. Then as the camera changed angles and pulled out to reveal the AMC Theater and logo, the crowd began laughing out loud because we were all sitting in that very theater. :-)

The moment that got me most was when Ryan tells Emma “Ask me something personal” — that was my favorite moment

    • ryna12

Yessss! totally this. One of my top 3 moments from this film. I enjoyed every SECOND of this film!

Weezer rules, nice screen name :p

When Julianne Moore told Carell she’d cheated on him, a lady yelled out, “You b!tch!”

    • April

When Julianne Moore asked when did you stop being you( or words to that effect) and Steve Carrell answered when you slept with David Lindhagen, most of the men in our audience yelled back at the the screen, ” That’s right, Bitch”. It was hilarious. And when she kissed him ( Kevin Bacon) outside the house, some woman, said “slut” in the quiet theatre and everyone laughed!!!

My crowd actually wasn’t that engaged at all! The only people who seemed to laugh were my friend and myself!

    • Amy

Oh, that’s too bad. My theater was almost full and most people seemed to be thoroughly enjoying the movie.

  • keith

I haven’t seen it but will this coming weekend, based on the good buzz and my affection for the cast. Sounds like a charming, if typically flawed, rom com.

    • Ashley

Nooooo, not flawed!!! WHYYYY did you read this???!? EARMUFFS, Keith!!!

The audience I was really vocal. They gasped or applauded at pretty much every part mentioned above, as well as when we saw Marissa Tomei for the 2nd time.

    • eyeheartnyc

yikes – I meant to type “The audience I saw it with was really vocal.

    • Jess

I agree-my audience gasped when she was revealed to be the Scarlet Letter teacher

People clapped when Steve Carell slapped Ryan Gosling at the end at his son, Robbie’s graduation.

i went to go see the movie on Friday and I agree with this article. I heard more laughs and clapping in the audience than I’m used to. People loved the scene when it was revealed that Emma Stone was revealed to be Steve Carrell’s daughter. I was really surprised when I found out. In the film, Steve Carrel keeps on saying that he has been married for about 25 years and I kept thinking, how is it that you were married for 25 years and have a son whose only 14 years old.

    • Elysia

I guess I’m one of the few who also assumed she was the daughter from the trailer. Wish I hadn’t seen that one coming, would have been more fun.

  • mazie beth

a great deal of laughs when I went (even though there were few souls during the matinee show). I, myself, was like “Yikes” when I saw the bar bill and when Gosling put on that old Doris Troy song ‘Just One Look’ for Stone, I said, “You’ve got to be f@#$ing joking.” great movie.

  • Jenny

the best reaction came from the 3 women sitting in front of me who were easily in their 60’s when ryan gosling takes his shirt off for emma stone they all let out a collective “Mmmmmmm”. i laughed out loud over that! fantastic movie all around.

When most of the male actors were fighting in the backyard in front of the children and the women, the audience was applauding and giggling hysterically.
