John Cusack on 'The Raven' and Edgar Allan Poe: 'He definitely was the godfather of goth'

Categories: Comic-Con

Director John McTeigue and the stars of The Raven, John Cusack, Alice Eve, and Luke Evans, debuted the film’s first trailer for the fans of Hall H today. Cusack plays Edgar Allan Poe in a fictionalized account of the author’s last five days alive, in which he must help track down a serial killer inspired by Poe’s writings. “He was a bit of a rock star in his day,” Cusack said of the charismatic writer. “He definitely was the godfather of goth.”

The dark and moody trailer definitely brought the goth, including plenty of dead and mutilated bodies, and — of course — screeching ravens. “It’s an art movie and a popcorn movie all at once,” Cusack said during the panel (moderated by EW’s Anthony Breznican).

And for all you Poe fans, Cusack had no problem answering which works by the author are his top five: the short story “Hop-Frog,” the poem “The Raven,” “The Cask of Amontillado,” “The Tell-Tale Heart,” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.”

The Raven will be in theaters March 9.

Armadyne invites you into the world of 'Elysium,' nearly two years before it opens

You know the old saying, “It’s never too early to start a viral campaign.” No? Well, it seems Neill Blomkamp and company are more than familiar with the adage. A new site stealthily promoting the District 9 director’s sophomore effort, Elysium, appeared on the web earlier this week despite the film’s distant March 2013 release date. Under the guise of a recruitment ad for the tech company, Armadyne, the spot promises “The Most Ambitious Project Ever Undertaken by Mankind,” and speaks in generalities about the optimistic possibilities of future technology. Check it out below.

Heat wave! Classic moments in pop culture melting

I’m melting, PopWatchers, melllllllllting. That’s because today, on the concrete island of Manhattan, it is roughly 10,000 (give or take a few thousand) degrees outside. If the Big Apple looks extra shiny today, it’s only because the unforgiving sun has turned us into sweaty, smelly, cranky puddles of our former selves.

Still, New Yorkers (and everyone else around the country suffering from these oppressive temps) are hardly the first to fry faster than an egg. Of course, there’s arguably the most famous moment in pop-culture melting, the aforementioned cries of the Wicked Witch of the West in The Wizard of Oz, but what about some of the other classic moments in liquefying? Here’s a rundown of some of the best: READ FULL STORY »

Celebrities to commemorate 9/11 anniversary with benefit reading of '110 Stories'

Like every American old enough to remember, I can recall where I was when it happened. I was at my desk in study hall that September morning in 2001 when young, tearful Mrs. Aberle announced that the World Trade Center towers had been attacked. I won’t ever forget the way her voice quavered when she said it — I couldn’t if I tried.

We all have harrowing memories of Sept. 11. Ten years later, though, the New York Says Thank You Foundation has found a way to turn these painful memories into positive change. This September, Manhattan’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts will commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 tragedy by hosting a star-studded benefit reading of 110 Stories, Sarah Tuft’s inspiring original play about 9/11. The cast list, while subject to change, is currently set to include Billy Crudup, Melissa Leo, Edie Falco, Susan Sarandon, Chris Noth and Kathleen Turner, among others, and the performers will all share their firsthand accounts of Sept. 11. 'Suits': Five reasons to love it

There are some shows that everyone is talking about before it premieres, a la Game of Thrones. And then there are others that come up in conversation over Twitter, email, or (gasp, face-to-face?!) dinner a week or more after they air, and you joyfully realize you’re not the only one in your circle watching it and loving it. That’s an experience you may be having with USA’s Suits (Thursdays, 10 p.m. ET). If you’ve yet to get hooked, it’s the new show about Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams), a brilliant former screw-up/stoner with a photographic memory who gets hired as an associate by one of New York City’s best (and best-dressed) legal closers, Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht, pictured). So why is this one of the summer’s most addictive new shows? I’ll show you my reasons, if you show me yours. READ FULL STORY »

This Week in Ryan Gosling: Unsavory massages, reprimanding Peter O'Toole, and dancing with Al Roker

Say what you will about Ryan Gosling — I usually say things like, “Oooh, handsome. So very, very handsome” — but you’ve got to give the guy credit: He sure knows how to make for a memorable talk show appearance. The actor spent the past week-and-a-half making the rounds on the gab fest circuit to promote his latest flick, the near-perfect romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid, Love, which opens next Friday. And while the movie doesn’t need to sell us (they had us at “Photoshopped” abs) Gosling certainly did his duty to pitch the movie to the masses. READ FULL STORY »

Freddy Krueger joins 'Mortal Kombat'

Categories: Horror, Videogames

Say what you will about the seemingly odd pairing of Freddy Krueger with Mortal Kombat, but the addition of the razor-gloved psychopath is certainly going to shake things up. Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios released a promo yesterday welcoming the horror icon to their franchise. Decked out with not one but two razor gloves for extra carnage, Freddy maintains his spooky sense of humor, issuing his opponents a casual wave goodbye and a menacing laugh after he slices and dices them. This addition brings new meaning to the idea of “dream warriors” from the third Nightmare on Elm Street film. Freddy joins the Kombat universe on Aug. 9. See the full promo after the jump. A 'Harry Potter' veteran takes a virgin to see 'Deathly Hallows -- Part 2.' Will the magic work on an unenlightened Muggle?

Once upon a time, a total Harry Potter superfan took a total Harry Potter newbie to see the last Harry Potter film. This is what happened. (Be warned: SPOILERS await!)

ADAM B. VARY: The final Harry Potter movie is finally upon us, Dan, and I could scarcely be more excited. One big reason? I will be seeing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 2 seated next to someone who has never seen a Harry Potter movie nor read any of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books: you.

Before we embark on our cinematic adventure — me, the wizened Albus Dumbledore to your fresh-out-of-the-Dursley’s-cupboard-under-the-stairs Harry Potter — I have one question: What do you know (or think you know) about Harry Potter?

DAN SNIERSON: We can start here: Who’s Mrs. Dursley? Clearly, I’ll be reduced to fake-gasping at long-hinted-at revelations and totally not getting inside jokes about characters’ established foibles. Which is why I have mixed feelings about embarking on this experiment. READ FULL STORY »

'SYTYCD': Mary Murphy on judging with Neil Patrick Harris and her one great regret

Neil Patrick Harris judges, a fabulous night of dancing, a short sit-down with Jason Gilkison, and my own personal mistake that I regret!

Well, I’m the first one to admit that Sasha should have been on the hot tamale train. I had every intention. It was even in my own notes. But sometimes when you are up there, things happen and you get carried away, and I wanted her to know that I felt she was an all-star in my mind and every bit as good as Twitch. When I look back on past seasons, that will be one of my regrets, and I hope to tell her so. I felt that routine and their chemistry was so hot it was getting close to an X rating. Props to choreographer Christopher Scott for a memorably hot Cha-cha-cha. READ FULL STORY »
