PopWatch Confessional: When you need a good cry, what is your go-to movie scene?

the-champ

The Champ might feature the saddest scene in movie history. That is, according to science. In a fascinating article from Smithsonian.com, we’ve learned that a scene from the 1979 film starring Ricky Schroder and Jon Voight is used in several psychological tests as a benchmark to determine when someone is responding to sad content. The clip in question (and SPOILER ALERT for those who care): Schroder’s young character watches his father (Voight) win in the boxing ring, only to die in front of him a few minutes later. It’s interesting: The scene from the film, which Smithsonian notes only received middling reviews and is embedded below, would certainly appear to succeed in evoking emotion even from the hardest individual. A 9-year-old watching his own parent die? Cue the ugly cry.

The study, however, has me reflecting on my own go-to sob scenes. When I really need a good cry, which movie scenes will always, always work? READ FULL STORY »

Can you guess the identity of this young star?

When not dressed in her usual garb, this young starlet becomes almost unrecognizable. And gorgeous. Can you guess who it is? Hint: She was one person who likely enjoyed the series finale of Law & Order: Criminal Intent. READ FULL STORY »

Alec Baldwin takes your questions on Twitter, reveals the movie he's most proud of

Alec-Baldwin

Alec Baldwin was positively Reaganing on Twitter this afternoon. It was a “magic zone of error-free” tweeting, as the 30 Rock star fielded questions for parts of six hours. Q: Who was your first movie crush? A: Raquel Welch. Q: Best pizza in NYC? A: Brothers in Fresh Meadows, Queens. Q: What’s for lunch? A: A lettuce-tomato sandwich on white bread, with a large helping of mayo. Then, some Tang.

Most of the inquiring tweets that Baldwin chose to respond to were the opposite of penetrating: favorite reality show (Hoarders), favorite Meryl Streep movie (Out of Africa), favorite Aimee Mann song (“Wise Up”). But I found his answer to, “What film starring yourself has made you feel the most proud?” most interesting. READ FULL STORY »

Happy Birthday Sandra Bullock! In your honor, we'll get sucked into 'The Proposal' every time it's on cable!

Sandra-Bullock

It’s hard to believe that Sandra Bullock is 47 today, isn’t it, PopWatchers? Never mind the fact that the gracious Oscar/Razzie winner has never looked better, but it seems like just yesterday — 1994, to be exact — that we met a talented up-and-comer with a knack for driving bomb-laden buses to safety. (Her only victim: Cans. They were just cans.)

So what better way to celebrate the star, who only seems to be getting better with age, than with a Sandra Bullock marathon? Lucky for us, at any give moment, While You Were Sleeping, Two Weeks Notice, The Proposal, or Miss Congeniality is on cable and we have zero qualms about watching them for the 139th time each. While the Internet (as seen in your 1995 classic The Net) has been happy to point out today that you’ve received something of a karmic birthday bonus, we just hope you have a nice day filled with well wishes, birthday cards (especially if they came from a magic, time-traveling mail box), and quality time with your insanely cute son.

Happy Birthday, Sandra Bullock!

What’s your favorite Sandra Bullock role, PopWatchers?

Spot Inspection: What TV show are you currently catching up on?

mad-men

Here’s some good PR for Netflix! Starting tomorrow, Mad Men‘s first four seasons will be available for instant streaming. That means you can catch up on the entire series with a binge, or by rationing to make it last you through the summer. That made us wonder: What TV show are you currently catching up on while your DVR is light? (It’s always both a relief and a disappointment to return home from a week’s vacation and find your DVR still has space, right?)

Right now, I’m in limbo. So really, I’m just looking for ideas. I finally watched both seasons of Party Down this summer and highly recommend you doing so if you haven’t. I’ve got a Torchwood: The Complete Original UK Series set on my desk. Thinking that’s what I’ll dive into next…

Your turn.

ESPN tell-all to be turned into a film. Who will play Keith Olbermann and friends?

It’s official. EW has confirmed that Twentieth Century Fox is acquiring the rights and developing a big-screen adaptation of Tom Shales and James Andrew Miller’s racy, randy tell-all, ESPN: Those Guys Have All the Fun. The gossipy, doorstop-sized oral history of the 24-hour sports network — in particular, its frat house-style early years — snagged a slew of headlines when it was published back in May thanks to its tawdry tales of on-air rivalries, inter-office prostitution, and of course, Keith Olbermann’s mammoth ego. With David Fincher’s The Social Network providing a blue-print of how to adapt a start-up saga like this one and Bennett Miller’s jock-themed Moneyball hitting theaters in September, we expect big things from this one. And since it’s never too early to start thinking about casting, here are our suggestions for some of the key players.

Keith Olbermann: Long before he ballooned into the self-important voice of the Left, Olbermann was the winningly snarky cohost of SportsCenter. This one is almost too easy for anyone who saw Ben Affleck’s Olbermann impersonation on SNL. READ FULL STORY »

Ben Affleck rocks the Bieber hair cut. Somewhere, Tom Brady smugly notes that is SO 2010.

Ben-Affleck

Either Ben Affleck and Matt Damon really are in the midst of filming new projects that require them to have unfortunate hairstyles (or, in Damon’s case, a lack thereof) or this is shaping up to be the strangest follow-up to Good Will Hunting imaginable. (Yes, even stranger than Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season.)

Alas, the old pals really are working — separately, sadly — on new movies. Affleck is starring in the upcoming hostage thriller Argo while Damon is working on Neill Blomkamp’s latest sci-fi venture Elysium. Still, while Damon’s new look is amusing (and kinda hot?!), Affleck’s borders on downright upsetting. (We finally regained our crush on you in The Town and now this.) Just a heads up, Ben: Justin Bieber could very well write a rap about why you need to change your similar haircut, which may, in turn, prompt you to grow a ponytail. We only tell you, because we care.

What do you think of Ben Affleck’s new look, PopWatchers? Do you like it or are you having a hard time unseeing Justin Bieber’s head on Ben Affleck’s adult male body? Post in the comments section below!

MTV dusts off classic Amy Winehouse concert

Back in the summer of 2007, just days after her smash album Back to Black was certified gold and critics began comparing her to Billie Holiday and Dinah Washington, 23-year-old Amy Winehouse was the headline attraction on the premiere episode of MTV’s then-new live music show, 45th at Night. Backed by the Dap-Kings and pairing with Mos Def for a sizzling rendition of “Love is a Losing Game,” Winehouse was masterful, performing hit songs like “Rehab,” “Back to Black,” “Me & Mr. Jones,” and “You Know I’m No Good.”

Tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., MTV will re-air the “rarely-seen set” (except on YouTube) as a musical celebration of the singer, who died tragically on Saturday. Take a peek at MTV’s promotional clip. READ FULL STORY »

Summer Movie Body Count: Captain America kills tons of people (but they all deserved it)

Week 12 of EW’s 2011 Summer Movie Body Count continues with Captain America: The First Avenger, in which Chris Evans is transformed from a scrawny wimp into a depilated Nazi-killing hunk. Warning: This post has more SPOILERS than a muscle-car convention. But if you love your country (and/or costumed beefcake), we bet you’ll read it anyway.

In keeping with America’s global image as a non-violent, neutral peacekeeper, Captain America: The First Avenger has zero deaths. Thank you for reading.

Joke! The whole fun of this movie is watching the Cap’n crunch some evil Nazi skulls during WWII. But he’s not the only one who gets in on the action. In fact… READ FULL STORY »

Old Spice Guy Isaiah Mustafa and Fabio go 'Mano a Mano'

Yesterday, Fabio challenged old Old Spice Guy Isaiah Mustafa to an Internet duel — appropriately named, “Mano a Mano in el Baño” — to determine who is the ultimate Old Spice Guy. After single-handedly resolving the NFL lockdown (or so he claims), Mustafa accepted. As of noon today, the dueling beefcakes have been puffing out their formidable chests in an attempt to one-up each other on the brand’s YouTube channel.
