James Spader's addition to 'The Office': Does he make you interested in the show again?

When Steve Carell opted to bow out of The Office and took the irreplaceable (both in our hearts and at Dunder Mifflin) Michael Scott with him, many fans of the series, myself included, all but wrote the show off. His departure was beyond words, really. It was incalculable.

Then came the season seven finale, and with it a bevy of guest stars, all of which were vying for the Regional Manager position and, perhaps, the opportunity to be last saving grace for the struggling sitcom.

It seems none of them made a bigger impression on Dunder Mifflin, or The Office‘s still-hopeful fans for that matter, more than James Spader and his intimidating, overly confident candidate Robert California. Of course, the Spader-eqsue swagger once again worked its magic, as it was announced today that the actor would be joining the cast in the upcoming eighth season. So does this mark a revival — or first beacon of hope since Carell’s departure — for the series?  READ FULL STORY »

PopWatch Confessional: Have you ever given up on a show on TV, only to rediscover it on DVD?

When Damages debuted on FX in 2007, I was fully prepared to love it. I tuned in to the premiere to see what the buzz was all about, and the show impressed me immensely. Glenn Close and Rose Byrne were superb as dueling lawyers, the story was gripping, and the production was impressive. I thought I had found my new Lost, but my excitement proved to be short-lived. As the weeks went on, my enthusiasm for the legal thriller quickly waned, and I quit watching after about a month.

You see, Damages just got too dang complicated for basic cable! Everyone started spying on everyone else, and a dozen characters were dying and spilling secrets every episode, and though the dialogue and acting remained top-notch throughout, I had no idea what was going on.  READ FULL STORY »

On Kissing Day, I wish you a peck from 'Paradiso'

In case you didn’t know forgot, today, July 6, is International Kissing Day. On the long list of obscure, unessential social holidays, Kissing Day ranks somewhere between Handshake Day and Whacking Day. Still, everyone has a favorite kiss, like Campbell Scott’s character in Singles? He was enamored with Robert Doisneau’s “Kiss by the Hotel de Ville.” The VJ Day Times Square kiss is another iconic smooch, and when it comes to movies, everyone has a favorite. But rather choose just one, I’d like to share the heartmelting ending of Cinema Paradiso, which could be a commercial for Kissing Day. READ FULL STORY »

Dairy Queen treats Mary Lou Retton like a pinata -- no metaphor intended

Maybe it’s just the excitement of today’s Olympic announcement coupled with the oppressive city heat that has me craving ice cream by 9 a.m. each morning, but this Dairy Queen commercial hits all the right spots. Tastebuds. Funny bone. Nostalgia… muscle. I give it a solid 9.8. What about you, you chocolate-loving East German judge? READ FULL STORY »

Speculation ran wild after Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg told reporters last week that his company was going to “launch something awesome” today at 1 p.m. ET. Would it be an official iPad app? A new photo platform? A systematic buy-back of every Social Network DVD? Today we learned the answer: Video chat. (They call it video calling, but that sounds weirdly retro to us: “Dear, you have a video call from you mother on the teleboxmachine.”)

In a live announcement from Facebook’s HQ in Palo Alto, Zuckerberg unveiled a new video chat system that combines Skype software with Facebook’s social infrastructure. READ FULL STORY »

'American Idol': Which season 10 contestant's potential career has you most excited?

Yesterday’s news that Pia Toscano has signed with Interscope Records has us wondering: After this summer’s American Idols LIVE! tour (during which everyone will be EXTRA ALIVE), who else from season 10 will you really want to hear from again?

Pia Toscano is this rare Idol contestant who still manages to create huge buzz. She’s a pretty girl who could sing well, so how dare America get it wrong? I like Pia’s voice — never detected much musical intrigue from her, but I suppose that’s what production teams are for. The way she’s still kind of a big deal as the ultimate Idol underdog is fascinating enough that I would play her album right away just to see… well, whether personality matters, I guess. Whether a team of pop-bot specialists could really manage to churn out a total “package artist” (hi Kara!) from a talented, kind soul with super-shiny hair. I don’t know! I hope so. It happens all the time. Look at Girls Aloud. They’re such exquisitely trained robots. I love them! READ FULL STORY »

'Teen Mom' season 3 premiere: Did you watch?

teen_mom_farrah

Last night, Farrah, Maci, Catelynn, and Amber returned for another season of Teen Mom, the show that made them (semi-)household names — and consistent tabloid fodder. And clearly the notoriety has infiltrated the lives of some more than others. READ FULL STORY »

Won't you donate your Facebook relationship status to 'Friends With Benefits'? Think of the children!

Justin Timberlake isn’t a stranger to the celebrity-endorsed public service campaign. He recently appeared in one of Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore’s “Real Men Don’t Buy Girls” ads as a confused bearded man. His latest venture into world-bettering features his Friends With Benefits co-star Mila Kunis, and may be a little less serious. Check out the video below: READ FULL STORY »

Angelina Jolie and Sarah Jessica Parker top 'Forbes' Highest Paid Actresses list

Looks like the Carrie Bradshaw effect is still going strong. Sarah Jessica Parker tied Angelina Jolie for top honors on Forbes’ 2010 Highest Paid Actresses List. More surprising, Parker bested Hollywood heavies like Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Julia Roberts.

Jolie and Parker each took in $30 million in last year, but for very different reasons. The magazine credited Jolie’s success to her viability as an action star in films like Salt and The Tourist. On the other hand, Parker kept things decidedly girly, not only making bank on her leading role in the Sex and the City sequel but also with a designing gig at high-fashion house Halston and through her line of signature fragrances. Which geek-tastic 2012 film are you most excited for? Vote in our poll!

We’re becoming increasingly impatient, PopWatchers: There’s still 14 excruciatingly long days until 2011′s Comic-Con kicks off. Of course, that’s small peanuts compared to the seemingly impossibly far off release dates of the most highly-anticipated flicks of 2012. Granted, we don’t know which of these geek out-worthy films will be making their way to San Diego (The Hunger Games, for one, has already announced it will not attend the convention), but that doesn’t mean we’re not already overly eager for what’s ahead.

Just like us, EW.com readers went absolutely crazy over the stills for Peter Jackson’s treatment of The Hobbit, so we can only imagine the hysteria that will surround the entire film itself. Of course, when it comes to mania, the countdown to the conclusion of the Twilight saga (Breaking Dawn — Part 2) and the beginning of The Hunger Games may not be rivaled. But tell us, PopWatchers, is it the reboots of beloved franchises (Superman: Man of Steel, The Amazing Spider-Man), follow-ups (The Dark Knight Rises, Men in Black 3) or Bond, Bond 23, that has you the most stoked for the new year?

Patience, you are one tricky virtue. Vote in our poll below, and head to our Comic-Con hub for all things related to the convention come July 20! READ FULL STORY »
