Spike Lee is having a moment. Mandate Pictures confirmed rumors today that the director would helm the remake of the 2003 Korean cult classic, Oldboy. The announcement came only hours after Lee tweeted that he was heading to the set of the next yet-to-be-announced Spike Lee joint. This would be a big day for any director, nevertheless one who hasn’t had a film in theaters since Miracle at St. Anna flopped three years ago.

The remake has gone through a host of directors over the course of its development. READ FULL STORY »

The preview for 'Surprise Homecoming' gets me every time. Which other TV previews have made you cry?

I know the moments shown in the previews for TLC’s Surprise Homecoming are meant to be joyous, but I’ve got to be honest, this preview turned me into a ridiculous puddle of tears.

It felt almost scary to be that instantly impacted by something on TV. But they (they = evil preview trolls at TLC who, I theorize, collect tears in exchange for eternal youth) caught me off guard. The promo for the show, which captures the surprise reunions of military families, started off like a promo for Army Wives. Then, bam! Inspiring music, screams of joy, children running to their father, a mother crying. Too much. Also, highly effective. (I set my DVR.)  READ FULL STORY »

Each week, we invite our Twitter followers to share their 140-character reviews of the weekend’s big films in our EW Exit Poll. While Transformers: Dark of the Moon continued to blow the competition out of the water at the box office (and inspire some pretty amazing Michael Bay similes), Horrible Bosses got across-the-board raves from audience members. This week’s winning submissions are after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

Diane Sawyer's Jaycee Dugard interview: A lesson in the strength of the human spirit

When I was a child, my mom told me the story of Jaycee Dugard, the little girl who’d been kidnapped in 1991 on her way to school, as a cautionary tale. And all these years later, following her shocking reappearance in 2009, her story still resonates with me — and many others, I imagine. But now, her story is the ultimate tale of survival.

In her interview with Diane Sawyer that aired last night, the  kidnap-victim-turned-prisoner shocked me with her poise and ability to speak about her harrowing experience. Judging from the interview, I got the impression Sawyer was equally impressed by the composed and well-adjusted woman she was interviewing.

As Dugard detailed everything from her kidnapping to her rescue, she was the picture of strength. She talked about how she stayed one with the world, the secret journal she kept, and the way she tried to make a life for her two daughters despite horrific circumstances.

Prior to watching, I was sure I’d cry through the entire thing. But I didn’t. I found myself simply inspired. Inspired because this woman, who was once, to me, a lesson about the dangers of the world, had turned into a lesson in the strength of the human spirit.

Did you watch last night, PopWatchers? If not, you can watch below. READ FULL STORY »

Summer Movie Body Count: R-rated 'Horrible Bosses' has fewer casualties than 'Cars 2'

Week 10 of of EW’s 2011 Summer Movie Body Count moves along with the raunchy comedy ‘Horrible Bosses’. While the characters in this funny flick don’t abide by any laws, morals, or rules, we most definitely do. Well, at least when it comes to the Body Count (give yourself a refresher on our guidelines for how this whole operation works here.) Now, as we always warn, there are some MAJOR SPOILERS ahead, so if you don’t want to know which characters don’t make it to the end credits, stop right here. Or, at the very least, duck out of work right now and take in a matinée. Your boss will understand.

Summer Movie Body Count is sort of like an Oprah giveaway episode in that it’s always full of surprises (and they may make you totally freak out.) We don’t just mean crazy, unexpected deaths, like when someone literally gets surprised to death. Rather, we refer to the difficulty of predicting how many (or how few) people will die. They just don’t make it easy on us like they used to. 8 Heads in a Duffle Bag? We could have easily guessed how many people die in that one (…eight, right?). READ FULL STORY »

'SYTYCD': Mary Murphy on the Top 14 week's new choreographers and new judges

Due to some technical difficulties, Mary Murphy’s blog entry for last week’s Top 14 episodes of So You Think You Can Dance was unfortunately delayed. Better late than never, here are her full insights and observations about what went down on Wednesday night’s performance episode and Thursday night’s results.

Last Wednesday’s episode was an exciting night with new choreographers and new judges!

Yes, some new choreographers came in with a big splash, while others, not so much. I’m happy to report I loved the work that Justin Giles did with the seven guys — it was interesting and kept my attention the entire time. His other number also hit big, a contemporary piece starring Jess and Clarice, who in my opinion are coming on stronger every week. It will be interesting to see what happens when this partnership is broken up.

The choreographer in the hot seat is Shaun Evaristo, who choreographed Alexander and Sasha. I felt really bad that such a dynamic couple were not given choreography that played to their strengths. READ FULL STORY »

'Big Brother': Do tonight's nominations matter?

Dick-Donato-Brother

If you consider yourself a rabid Big Brother fan (and we know there are millions of you out there), then you probably already know that Dick Donato left the house shortly after the show’s premiere on Thursday. His departure should mean that tonight’s nomination ceremony will be a practice in futility: The house already had its first evictee, and his name was Evel Dick.

Personally, I can’t be more pleased about this surprise turn of events. (Shocker! I find him absolutely reprehensible). But his departure has spawned quite a few online conspiracy theories, namely that he staged some sort of Diary Room blowup and demanded an immediate eviction just so he could use the ordeal to promote his website. Then again, the dynamic between Evel Dick and his daughter Daniele on premiere night was just too uncomfortable to overlook, which could also mean that Daddy-O just didn’t want to spend another minute with a daughter who couldn’t stand him so he sought a quick getaway. After all, Dick did say that it had been three years since he had spoken to Daniele, who turned out to be quite the vision with her blonde-turned-brunette locks. (Hey, even I can muster up a few pleasantries about the Donato clan).

I’m hoping tonight’s nomination ceremony can shed some light on this mystery, even though CBS said we wouldn’t learn the full story until Wednesday’s episode. At the same time, I’m also feeling like the episode may be a waste of time because no one should have to go home if Dick already did. What do you think, BB fans? Weigh in with your opinions and/or conspiracy theories below. (Spoilers who frequent genius sites like Jokers Updates, refrain from spilling too much, please). And check back later for a full BB recap.

Celebrities react to Betty Ford's death

Categories:

Celebrities have been quick to respond to the death of former First Lady Betty Ford, who founded the eponymous center for addiction. Singer Stevie Nicks credited Ford with having “saved my life.” Gary Busey urged her family to “celebrate her life on the new plateau she is on.” Steven Tyler praised her “vision, passion, and amazing heart.” Gena Rowlands, who played Ford in a 1987 made-for-TV movie, called her “a national treasure.”

'Space Invaders' to be made into movie. Is this the old-school video game you want to see on the big screen?

Categories: Movies, Sci-Fi, Videogames

space-invaders

Many years ago, it took one quarter to enter the world of Space Invaders. Soon, it may take something like 43. According to the Hollywood Reporter, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (Transformers) and Odd Lot Entertainment’s Gigi Pritzker have optioned the rights to the wildly popular and pioneering arcade game that debuted in 1978 and captivated our hearts and fingers into the early 80s; they are currently looking for a writer to spin a story out of the low-fi, high-fun game. For those unfamiliar with Space Invaders, the premise was simple: Rows of aliens would march their way across and down the screen toward you while shooting lasers. Meanwhile, you maneuvered horizontally across the bottom of the screen, avoiding their fire, shooting back at them, and hiding behind barricades that became compromised by the crossfire. The more of them you killed, the faster they would come. If the aliens shot you, you lost one of your precious ships. If they reached the bottom of the screen, you lost everything. READ FULL STORY »
