The U.S. has finally decided to do something about the St. Louis Arch’s fatal flaw: not being colorful enough. Congratulations, country! Sony Pictures has obtained approval to construct a 94-by-188-foot rainbow near an entrance to its studio lot. Built to fulfill Culver City’s Art in Public Places requirement, the $1.5 million structure will be a nod to the rainbow imagined in The Wizard of Oz — which filmed there – but more generally, it will serve to infuse people with “the sense of optimism and well-being associated with rainbows in general.” Shiny, happy, people, laughing. They’ll be everywhere! Until they glance away and realize that real rainbows aren’t real and that’s not a jauntily jigging leprechaun on the other side of the artificial rainbow. It’s a bum. 'News of the World' scandal fake movie trailer casts Colin Firth as Hugh Grant, is verrrrrrrrrry British
I spent much of the weekend fantasizing about who I would cast in the inevitable movie version of the News of the World phone-hacking scandal. Cate Blanchett seemed like a good choice for disgraced, former newspaper editor Rebekah Brooks while Hugh Grant was surely a lock for the role of Hugh Grant. (You may not know this, but the star of The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain does an excellent impression of the Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain star.)
However, the new fake trailer you’ll find below has thrown my fantasy casting into disarray. The clip is very Anglo-oriented but still worth checking out, not least for the rather compelling suggestion that Simply Red frontman Mick Hucknall might actually make for a good Rebekah Brooks.
If nothing else, it would save the production a bunch of money on hair-gingerizing products. Check it out: READ FULL STORY »
Teenage dream: Katy Perry shows some love for gigantic Justin Bieber
Four weeks after she partied with 14-year-old Rebecca Black in her “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)” video, Katy Perry is living the teenage dream all over again — only this time, it’s with Canadian mini-heartthrob Justin Bieber. Or at least with a giant painting of him.
Perry tweeted a photo of herself Saturday posing next to what looks to be a 10-foot outdoor mural of Bieber in his signature hoodie and side-swept mop of hair. “Eatin’ corn on the cobb [sic] hangin with my adopted son, The Biebs,” reads the caption by Perry, who is pictured in a cowboy hat and a flannel shirt, snacking on an ear of corn. A quick jaunt through her Twitter feed and online tour dates suggests the mural is somewhere in scenic Calgary, Alberta, Canada. READ FULL STORY »
'Friends With Benefits' costar Bryan Greenberg: Movie premiere Dos and Don'ts
Tonight, Friends With Benefits holds its premiere in New York City, sponsored by AXE Shower. (How perfect is that?) We asked costar Bryan Greenberg (HBO’s How to Make It In America, October Road) — whose favorite of the AXE Fixers is the Shock shower gel — if he’s ever had a situation to rival AXE’s commercials. After laughing, he came up with one: “I have a female audience, so I’ve had glimpses of that. If I’m the Midwest in a mall, it could get a little hairy,” he says. “But nothing that I can’t handle. I appreciate it when fans are supportive, so it’s all good.”
We also asked him for tips on how to make it through a movie premiere. (Do eat beforehand and don’t wear a tie when it’s above 90 degrees are givens.)
– Don’t take a date. Tonight, he’ll be with his manager. “If you’re in the movie, your date isn’t gonna see much of you because you’re workin’ the room, people are talking to you, and you’re doing press. That’s an awful date to go on for the girl, I assume,” he says. “She’s like, ‘What about me?’” Parents and buddies are also acceptable. READ FULL STORY »
B.D. Wong not returning for next season of 'Law & Order: SVU.' Who should play the new psychiatrist?
Season 13 of Law & Order: SVU is turning into season 10 of American Idol: Attack of the Newbies.
Almost two months after Christopher Meloni announced he’d be leaving the long-running procedural next season and the announcement that two new agents — played by Kelly Giddish and Danny Pino – would be joining Mariska Hargitay on the show, B.D. Wong announced via Twitter this weekend that his character would not be returning for season 13. NBC confirmed the news to EW.
While Wong has plenty to keep him busy following the departure — he’ll co-star on NBC’s midseason show, Awake — SVU apparently has a void to fill. (No comment from the Peacock about if/when the role will be filled.) But if someone is stepping into George Huang’s shoes, I can guarantee it won’t be easy. On a show all about crazy guest characters, psychos, and over-the-top perverts, I enjoyed his soft-spoken nature. Here’s who I think could get the job done who could possibly be the only four actors who have not previously appeared on Law & Order: SVU: READ FULL STORY »
With 'Django Unchained,' will 2012 be the Year of Costner?
There’s a story in The Right Stuff where author Tom Wolfe explains why all airline pilots sound like they’re from West Virginia. Turns out a generation of pilots so idolized test pilot Chuck Yeager that they consciously or subconsciously copied everything about him, including his backwoods drawl, and then passed it on to the flyboys they subsequently trained. Well, it’s sort of the same thing with baseball players and Kevin Costner. Walk into any Major League clubhouse or high school dugout, and the lingo, the chatter — and the profanity — can be traced back to one man: Crash Davis. Costner’s fading minor-league catcher was handsome, clever, and worldly, and every kid with dreams of The Show couldn’t help but idolize him and, ultimately, sound like him. More than 20 years after Bull Durham, every ballplayer knows that strikeouts are fascist, and everyone knows without question the one taboo word you can’t say to an umpire. Costner simply was Crash Davis, and though he went on to star in bigger, more successful films, it’s the role that made him a Hall of Famer.
For true Costner fans, then, 2012 is shaping up to be an banner year after more than a decade of misfires and understated performances. (Despite winning supporting roles in Thirteen Days and The Upside of Anger, Costner hasn’t starred in a No. 1 opening film since 1999′s Message in a Bottle.) Not only has he been cast as Superman’s Earthly father, Jonathan Kent, in Zack Snyder’s reboot, but Quentin Tarantino has tabbed him to play one of the slave-driving villains in Django Unchained. 'Finding Neverland' musical dropped from world premiere at La Jolla Playhouse
The musical version of Finding Neverland, the 2004 Oscar-nominated movie inspired by Peter Pan and starring Johnny Depp and Kate Winslet, has officially been cut from the line-up at the La Jolla Playhouse, according to a press release put out by the company. The musical was supposed to make its world premiere at the La Jolla, Calif., based theater from Nov. 8 through Dec. 11, but instead, the Stratford Shakespeare Festival production of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar (running Nov. 18 through Dec. 31) directed by Des McAnuff will take its place.
The theater said that pulling the plug on Finding Neverland was the decision of Weinstein Live Entertainment, which was producing for La Jolla Playhouse. READ FULL STORY »
