Remember last October, when Gretchen won Project Runway season 8 over Mondo, and everything you believed in — fashion-forwardness, justice, big-ass polka dots — just Read the full post.
There’s a limit to how long I’ll wait…LOL. If it gets too far into the season, I’ll just start it on my own. But Hubby really loves fashion. He subscribes to Vogue and W and Elle. He never understood when his friends would rib him about it (when he was younger)…. he’s have them look at them and then they’d get it. It’s like a barrage of beauty. Much better than Playboy et al. So, yeah, fashion is basically his porn. But obviously, he likes the process of it too which is why he likes Project Runway. He’s into Aesthetics in general.
Yeah, I’m definitely a daddy’s girl! LOL! He’s the best too! Since I got home from the hospitals & rehab centers after my wreck (4 months away from home is torture by the way) he either stops by to visit on his way home from work or calls to check on me if it’s late every single day. Bless his heart, he got the call about my wreck right after it happened & got there just in time to see them pull me out of what was left of my Yukon so he was there for every horrifying moment of it. No parent should have to go through that!
But anyway, I get my preference for action movies & such from him! About the only shows that I watch that he doesn’t are Project Runway, DWTS, & SYTYCD…he even likes Desperate Housewives & Drop Dead Diva (which he calls “the Diva”)!!

That sucks about your dad being so far away! My whole family is in the Southeast (Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, etc) except one cousin in California! I hope you get to visit them frequently!! There’s nothing like family (and friends who become family)!

I definitely miss my dad… I talk to him all the time though. He’s in Florida and I’m in L.A. (Are you in Florida? I can’t remember.) Your accident sounds so awful. My husbands good friend (he was his Best Man at our wedding) got in a similar accident in January of 2010. He was driving at like 5 a.m. and a drunk driver just swerved into his lane and he ended up being T-boned by their truck. His whole left side was crushed… pelvis, arm (and he’s left-handed), thigh shoulder all broken with a deep laceration on his neck from the seat belt cutting in. He underwent numerous surgeries and one was done wrong and had to be done over… he also got a staph infection in his arm bone and had to have intensive antibiotics (and this was a year after). Tons of physical therapy. He’ll never have full use of his left arm but he’s pretty functional and he was walking about 5 months after the accident… but he still walks with a limp. But, like you, he’s lucky to be alive. It just seems like that would be so frustrating. That’s not the right word but I don’t know what is.

I bet you do! I’m in Alabama though I was actually born in St. Petersburg, FL then adopted by my parents when I was 3 months old. We used to go to Destin every summer too…we’re only about two & a half hours away from there.
Bless his heart!!!! Yeah that definitely sounds like what happened to me (crushed left arm, ribs, hip, pelvis, etc). It’s a horrible experience for sure, but at least I was right-handed! I can’t imagine have to rely on my damaged arm instead of the healthy one. It was 4 months before they cleared me to start walking again. It’s astounding how much you lose during that time too. First time I sat on the edge of the bed it took 2 therapists just to hold me in a sitting position! You are never prepared for the fact that the recovery will take years instead of weeks or months. I’m really sorry he had to deal with MRSA too…that’s a real b*tch. I was blessed to escape it after the wreck but when they did my hip replacement last year my luck ran out, well, slightly. My ortho went in to take out the replacement once the abscess that erupted on the incision was confirmed as MRSA. He told me there was a 5% chance the infection hadn’t gone deep enough to threaten the new hip but lo & behold, it hadn’t. I still had a two week hospital stay, 6 weeks of IV antibiotics, & an open wound that took 6 months to close BUT I got to keep my new hip (that took 10 hours to put in) so it was a win!
Frustrating is definitely the right word!! I still get aggravated when I turn the wrong way & it hurts, or I can’t reach down & pick something up, pull my hair back or even touch my left foot! I’m hoping to get an elbow replacement soon so that I can have more use of my left arm (it’s permanently locked between 45 & 90 degrees so I can’t straighten it out or bend it enough to even wash my hair). But, like you said, I’m just grateful to be alive!!! I’ve learned to focus on the things that I can do instead of what I can’t…keeps you sane. Honestly though, I wouldn’t trade the lessons I’ve learned & the person I’ve become over the last 3 years for a completely healthy body! I hope your friend is recovering well now though with no more setbacks or surgeries on the horizon!
Funny thing about the seatbelt though, if I had been wearing mine I’d be dead right now! I never wore one because it cut into my neck (I’m 5’4″ with asthma that flares up around my throat). So when I hit the 18-wheeler I got thrown into the passenger seat instead of completely crushed in the wreckage of the driver’s seat! My dad says that’s still not an excuse to not wear it now though! LOL!

I remember you saying that about the seat belt. I know, though… it depends on the accident. Sometimes it truly is better to be thrown out or away from the impact. But, yes, overall… probably better to wear one. Not to mention the ticket cost since it’s the law. Although my best friend (who actually just died in April) had a medical thing where he couldn’t wear one… he’d had a heart transplant and before that a pacemaker so the seat belt restricted him. But enough about him… (Or, as Forrest Gump would say, “That’s all I have to say about that.”). This friend with the car accident though… same thing like you with his arm… it was at a permanent angle and the insurance BS and everything is such a nightmare. Since he’s left-handed, he took it upon himself to try to rehabilitate his arm and had what looked like Medieval torture devices he got to help gradually stretch his range of motion. Also, while in the hospital right after the accident (well, about 3 or 4 weeks after) he realized they weren’t planning on doing anything about the large gaping wound in his arm! He was laying in the hospital bed with a wound cleaner thing attached to this 6-inch long, 2-inch wide hole in his forearm (his arm had been dragged out the window of his car for a stretch of road and then pinned under the car)…. he finally spoke up about it and arranged to have himself transferred to another hospital to treat it. While there, and undergoing surgery for his arm, the surgeon had realized from X-rays that the hip replacement had been done wrong and so he re-did that while fixing the arm. So, basically, back to square one. He really was dogged about getting back the use of his arm, though. He just couldn’t function at all with his right arm. It was a big victory when he could touch his left hand to his forehead. And now he’s fishing again (he’s a big fisherman) and is doing pretty good. For the infection, he didn’t want to go back in the hospital (where he had caught the damn thing in the first place) so he had a PICC line (or something) implanted… like a permanent IV thing and then had a hospital worker come to change the antibiotics twice a day. What an ordeal. They had found the bone infection when he was going in for another surgery on his elbow. Phew! It’s great you can now focus on the positive and are embracing the person you’ve become. That’s the only thing to do…. but not everyone can. BTW… how old are you? I can’t remember if you’d said somewhere before or not… If you just want to give a range (or not at all) that ‘s fine. I was just curious. I just turned 44 last month. Aaaargh! Time really does fly. That Pink Floyd song “Time” from “Dark Side of the Moon” has such insightful lyrics… kind of depressing, but very truthful. I see we’ve commandeered this board. It’s a good one to do it with. Not too many people and it’s already outdated since PR has started already. I have to start watching soon because I love Annie Barrett’s recaps and I won’t read them until I’ve seen the episode.

First off, I am SO sorry about your best friend! I know what a hard situation that is to go through. Losing a best friend is the same as losing family!
Yeah my dad is the first to preach seatbelt safety after all the wrecks he’s been to (he’s a coroner & funeral director). I’ve had two students saved because they weren’t wearing theirs (one lost his leg when he was thrown from his truck but his truck also exploded so thank God he got thrown out) and one student was killed because he wasn’t wearing one. Sadly, It just all depends on the accident.
Jeez!!! Poor guy!!! I know finding great doctors & decent hospitals is probably the hardest part of all of this! I’m lucky to have found a great orthopaedic surgeon (even if his bedside manner is a little too “House” for most people)! I’m glad he has recovered so well, especially after dealing with, what I assume was MRSA. I got that after my hip replacement so I understand how rough it is. I have to get to get a PICC line now anytime I go into the hospital because my veins are too small to be of much good (in the first 4 days for my hip replacement I blew 5 IVs…that’s when we discovered I simply cannot get blood transfusions through a normal IV). I was so glad to have mine for those 6 weeks of IV antibiotics too! The week before the surgery to clean it out I had to go to the hospital every day for the treatment & that was horrible. Whoever came up with those home care treatments that were so easy my parents could do them deserves a Nobel Prize for Excellent Patient Care (which is so a prize they should offer)!
I think I know the stretching device you’re talking about. I tried one but it was impossible for me to move around by myself at the time so I was never able to use it adequately nor got any real benefit from it. Since then though, exercise & use has helped to loosen it up some! I know what you mean about touching his forehead though…I scared my dog I screamed so loudly the first time I realized I could scratch my nose with my left hand!!! LOL! It’s amazing how those little things can mean so much! What kind of surgery did he have on his elbow? Mine is getting to where it hurts all the time so I’ve been planning to talk to my ortho about an elbow replacement. He says it’s the absolute worst joint to ever damage because it almost never heals properly with full function restored! :-/
Happy Belated Birthday!!!! I will be 33 in October! I actually ‘celebrated’ my 30th birthday while in the hospital, eleven days after my wreck! But, like my dad says, at least I’ll never forget it! LOL! I know what you mean about time flying by! It seems like only yesterday I was graduating from college but instead I’m approaching my 15th reunion (high school)! I’ve got friends who are already lying about their age! Crazy! Personally I’m quite proud of my age!!!
Yes, I noticed we seem to have taken over…oops!! It may sound silly but I’ve come to really enjoy our conversations on here! Most of the time it’s just me & my dog at the house so I’ve learned to cherish what human interaction I do get to enjoy!!
I hope you’ll get to watch the show soon! I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the new designers!
