In this shirt, Niles Crane was hot

Last night, I found Niles Crane (David Hyde Pierce) hot for the first time ever while watching Frasier reruns on Hallmark. (In case you haven’t realized it: Starting at 9 p.m. ET from Monday through Friday, three hours of Frasier leads into two hours of Golden Girls and an hour of Cheers -- I may never be alert at work again).

In my world, finding Niles sexy is as monumental as the first time I related more to Maria than Liesl while watching The Sound of Music and found myself wondering if I’d be woman enough to help Captain von Trapp and his seven children flee Austria. It’s this shirt Niles was wearing in the season 8 episode “The Wizard and Roz” (pictured) that’s to thank, I believe. Seeing him in anything other than a suit feels intimate. I think it also helped that the episode that aired right before it was “Daphne Returns,” the one that ends with Niles and Daphne sleeping together for the first time.

I know I’m not the only person to find Niles Crane attractive, but I assumed you had to be in your 30s to share the opinion. But then my friend Tamara admitted that in college when the show began its original run, she found Niles “very hot.” (“He was witty and slightly mean. All good things for a teen,” she says.) So, let’s hear it: Who else was/is attracted to Niles Crane, and how old were/are you?

    What a milestone this is.

    • frasier was terrible

Cheers was the far superior show – better acting, plots, and it was funnier. Frasier relied on the “mix-up” plot device for practically every episode. Give me Sam “Mayday” Malone any day over Frasier

I will give David Hyde Pierce credit for hosting my favorite SNL in the 90s when I discovered the band LIVE playing “I Alone”

I hated Cheers. I NEVER understood why it was so popular. I only started satching Frasier because nothing better was on.

Greatest line ever from Frasier: “Duke, I need to call you back – I’m in the Twilight Zone!”

Although I’m a little concerned that a former police officer is secretly in charge of a shadow spy organization.

Just watched that rerun today on my DVR. Totally agree.

I was on the fence about Niles Crane until I saw David Hyde Pierce in Wet Hot American Summer. I could never watch Niles the same after that!!! Wowza!!!

You post like a burger. I don’t like you anymore.

I never thought about him as hot until I saw him in The Perfect Host. Awesome!

  • helenann

Yup. Hawt, but this wasn’t the first time I found him so. I think it was the episode when he said his thesis had been, “The Narcissistic Opera Singer: Mi, Mi, Mi, Miiiiii!”

Actually laughing at “Frasier” is my new “you know your old when…”. Thinking Niles as hot falls into the same category. I unfortunately just reached it over Memorial Day after a 15 hour marathon. Thanks Hallmark Channel!

I started watching Frasier when I was in middle school, and thought it was funny. Sometimes a show is just funny regardless of one’s age.

I’m 24 and Frasier is one of my favorite shows. I never understood why Frasier got all of these attractive women but Niles was positioned as awkward with the ladies. I think I always found him more adorable than hot but on the ep where he finally told Daphne how he felt, they kissed, and he said “I think you can start calling me Niles” swoon! Hot!

I do think they intentionally made him dress less fussy after he started dating Daphne, because he was more at ease and happy. Kind of like Pam – before she and Jim got together she always dressed drab and pretty much only wore beige. I think Jenna Fischer has never looked more beautiful than she did in the Season 4 opener when we find out they were secretly dating all summer. She was wearing a bright blue sweater and her hair looked way better than it had before.

Niles didn’t get all the girls because he was married to Marist for a huge majority of the episodes. Then not long after he divorced, he got married Mel and divorced her to be with Daphne.

      • Lauren

Yeah, but my point was when was single he was always put upon as awkward. And there were a lot of jokes about how he never got any in college. Remember the ep where they all reminisce about passionate affairs and Niles makes one up from a book?

love the show, love the writing, and love the Niles/Daphne storyline, but honestly, Dave Hyde Pierce came off as way too effeminate / gay in his portrayal of Niles. I’m not saying gay guys can’t play straight, but he didn’t do a convincing job of that.

    • yes

Have to say I totally disagree, Niles’ lust for Daphne was like it’s own character. I thought they had great chemistry and I never doubted how desperate he was for her.

What I loved about Niles was that he was TV’s first closeted heterosexual. Niles was rather prissy and married to a woman whose only possible appeal was her money, so he could easily be read as a gay man entering into a marriage of convenience. However, lurking beneath his prim exterior was his lust for Daphne, which was his “deep, dark secret.” Also, I really liked the way the writers softened Niles’s attitude toward his father over the years, especially after he got involved with Daphne. A nice bit of character development there. (And, yes, I always thought that Niles was a hottie!)

Niles was always my favorite!!! He made that show…quite a feat considering how awesome the entire cast was! And yes, even in college I thought Niles was hot!! LOL!
Hallmark’s nighttime schedule is better than most current ones on the networks! I get sucked in every night & then it’s 2am before I know it!! :-)

  • Brenna

I did always have a little crush on him, especially when he was soo desperate for Daphne and then when they FINALLY got together. They will always be one of my favorite tv couples :)

  • Maree

I recently rediscovered Frasier after so many years. I had stopped watching it way before it went off the air and am happy to see so many episodes I had missed.

  • Cate

I’m 21 and have always found Niles hot.
