'Home Alone' actor Roberts Blossom passes away. We bless this highly nutritious microwavable macaroni and cheese dinner in his honor.

Some seriously sad news: Roberts Blossom — the character actor best known for playing the wrongly-accused South Bend Shovel Slayer, a.k.a. “Old Man Marley,” in Home Alone — has passed away at the age of 87. The L.A. Times reports that Blossom died of natural causes in a nursing home in Santa Monica.

While Blossom, a three-time Obie Award winner, had an illustrious career on stage and screen that spanned 40 years (he was featured in films like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Always, Christine, and the cult horror movie Deranged, and appeared in TV shows such as Moonlighting, Northern Exposure, and Chicago Hope) he’ll best be remembered by younger folk everywhere as the neighbor who saves Macaulay Culkin’s trouble-making Kevin McCallister from being murdered by the Wet Bandits. (Oh, if only he’d been there when Thomas Jay stumbled upon that beehive… )

Sure, Macaulay Culkin became the biggest star at the time in the 1990 classic, but it was “Old Man” Marley that taught him — and us — valuable lessons like not judging a book by its cover and believing everything you hear. (The rumor that the salt he spread up and down “the most boring street in the whole United States of America” turned to bodies into mummies was most certainly not true.)

I don’t know about you, PopWatchers, but Home Alone is a staple for me each holiday season, not to mention one of my all-time favorite movies, period. So I’m sure I’ll get choked up even more than usual this year during that final scene in which we find out Marley has patched things up with his estranged family. When Marley sends that final, sweet wave to Kevin, Home Alone fans will be saying goodbye to an old, reliable friend, too.

Post your favorite moment from the actor below, PopWatchers.

Your article actually almost made me tear up at the end, and I’m at work, so that would’ve been embarrassing.

My exact thoughts. I was doing ok, until i started reading about that final scene. I love home alone so much, and that scene is a big reason why.

Home Alone and Home Alone 2 are one of my all time favs too! RIP!

RIP to the guy, but you and Aly set the bar awfully low to lay claim that these movies are on your list of all (no hyphen) time “favs”.

RIP-Roberts Blossom! I always loved your character in Home Alone (though you did kinda scare me when I was 9 & saw the movie when it came out).

Rest in Peace. I always cry at Old Man Marley’s story in Home Alone (which I also watch every Christmas season). It’s so heart wrenching, and Robert Blossom played it so perfectly.

I loved him in Deranged, a seriously overlooked film based on the ghoul Ed Gein. Blossom was scarily convincing in that role.

I have to admit that I will watch Home Alone anytime it comes on TV, regardless of whether is is July of December. I have always loved the connection formed between Kevin and the old neighbor. Sad news for sure.

Home Alone is a classic. I watch it every year on Thanksgiving night. RIP Mr. Blossom.

87?! My god, I thought he was 87 20 years ago! This man terrified me in Home Alone. RIP. :-(

In John Carpenter’s woefully underrated “CHRISTINE” Roberts Blossom absolutely steals every scene he’s in. Done up in some ungodly back truss, he spins the most poisonous sales pitch you’ll ever hear. Unforgettable.
    RIP Mr. Blossom.

Sad to hear about his passing. A real actor who gave everything to his performances. I understand that he was also a class act in person, always the true professional. RIP.

“New car smell is the best smell in the world, except for….”

Yeah, that quote pops in my head every so often, usually at the most inoportune time…And that last seen in “Home Alone”? Niagra Falls, every time (to paraphrase David Johansen)

  • rob miller

Well said, Aly Semigran! He was a class act all the way!

RIP. Home Alone is the definitive Christmas time movie.

I was a huge fan of the soap opera Another World and Roberts Blossom played the evil Sven during its heyday in the 1970’s. Sven killed Rocky the gardener and stuffed his dead body under the floor boards. Sven also drugged his employer Mac Cory and made his pregnant daughter climb into bed with him to let Mac think they slept together and he got her pregnant. I remember going to the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind in 1978 and the lady behind screamed “Oh my God, It’s Sven” when Roberts character first comes on the screen.
A great actor that will be missed!
