Okay, these celebrity guest judges on So You Think You Can Dance are getting faintly ridiculous. Megan Mullally had formal dance and Broadway experience — okay. Read the full post.
wow. i’ almost all the way through and jesse tyler ferguson makes me want to cut myself. do you really have to start with a sassy yet incredibly lame jokey thing before making a comment. i hope you can read jesse tyler ferguson. read this: you blew.
Again I disagree – it was nice to see a fan of the show be a guest judge – he really seemed to like the show and he knew most of the dances that each dancer had done in the past – i also thought he didn’t just give an “I love you” as a comment
I actually kind of liked this episode because all of the couples danced at least one style they had not danced yet, so it didn’t feel really unfair like it has felt for the past couple weeks. I was really disappointed that they didn’t do any new styles this week. This was the first time in four seasons that a new style (Bollywood, Kalinka, Can-Can, Tahitian) wasn’t introduced during Week five. Boo! Why haven’t they done anything like Krump, Disco, West Coast Swing/Lindy Hop, or Pas de deux yet?
As far as the performances go, I was really surprised how well Clarice and Jess and Sasha and Alexander did. I really thought it would be Alexander and Clarice going home this week, but now I don’t think either of those couples will be in the bottom. It basically has to be Ryan (yay!) and either Mitchell or Ricky (boo!) going home tomorrow night.
I 100% agree. I thought it was “So You Think You Can Dance” not “So You Think You Can Dance Contemporary and Jazz”. Never thought I’d say it . . . but I’m almost getting bored with contemporary. And there HAVE to be choreographers out there who could shine like the more seasoned ones. I refuse to believe that homeboy who did Sasha and Alexander’s hip-hop last week is the best the show can find. To entice choreographers to do their best work ALL the time, I think there should be a sub-contest online where people could vote on their favorite routine of the season and the choreographer would win $$ or something. Something to lure in the good ones. The show is just as much about the choreographers as it is the dancers. Crappy dances mean crappy ratings.
I agree! They haven’t introduced anything really new this season (and I don’t count contemporary hip-hop as new). The new choreographers they are introducing are usually a miss, is every else just busy?
I don’t know if it’s just me either, but the songs haven’t been as good this season. I used to find at least 1 or 2 songs per episode that I would immediately want to go and download.
jess and clarice = my faves of the night… i thought the judges went too far in the other direction tonight, lots of bad comments and its the one week wherre most of them danced out of their genre, i think it should be out of your genre for the first three weeks to see your mettle then give them their own style. perhaps they are trying reverse pyschology on the viewers and by dissing ryan they think we will vote for her?
Well, I know I’m going take heat, for what I’m about to say; I’m from Canada, and for the first time, So You Think You Can Dance Canada is running the same time as the US. And also for the first time since the CDn version started 4 seasons ago, I have to say that ours is better. It’s a combination of overall better talent, diverse choreography (we had Afrojazz and New Disco last week), with fantastic choreographers—I/e Stacey Tookie etc.
But by far, the BIGGEST reason it’s better, is that it has the old format of the US version. The bottom girl/guy go home, unless they TRULY dance for their lives. No favoritism—we watched them draw their partners names out of a hat, and there is no shameless pimping of crappy dancers like Ryan.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I love the US version, and as everyone has said on these boards, past seasons have had the best dancing on TV anywhere. I just don’t understand what’s happened to it, the last couple of seasons…..
I’m from Europe and I watch both shows. I can fully agree that this year’s Canadian show has much better talent compared to previous years. However, US show is maintaining the talent level more or less equally for the past 7 seasons.
Oh agreed—I just think that the limited dance styles aren’t showcasing the dancers’ talent like in years past….

It also uses the old style stage which is much better than one the US show uses now. If only it could steal Cat, then there would be no reason to watch the American show at all!
I loved the African Jazz routine from the Canadian show Monday. I can’t stop watching it.
Off the top of my head, the Canadian show has 4 ballroom dancers and 4 hip hop dancers (including a couple of girls). In the past there’s been a tap dancer, a ballerina, and ballroom dancers in the top 4. Way more diversity.
I know! A ballroom guy won it last year—-can you ever see that happening in the US version?(although, I bet PIMB wishes that one particular guy would have…..:)

Um, didn’t Benji win Carielle? He was a ballroom guy(west coast swing). I do wish we had more diversity though and can’t understand why they haven’t been able to find more hip hop girls.

The only unfortunate thing about the Canadian show for me is that I find the host incredibly grating.
But the variety of dance styles does make it a standout. I mean, I doubt the Us show would even consider doing House or Dancehall, and the Canadian dancers have killed in those styles.
There were a couple of well-choreographed dances last night (most notably Travis Wall’s and M&M’s second dance, can’t remember who did that one), most were just ok, and an unfortunate number of them looked like the choreographers had phoned them in. That thing that Ryan and Ricky were saddled with was probably the worst choreo I’ve seen since the Russian folk dance. Twenty seconds in, my husband said “When is the dancing going to start?”
Unfortunately, it never did. And then the judges telling them something to the effect that the dancers have to sell it no matter what they’re given is just stupid. If the quality of a piece choreographed for the show is so simple it wouldn’t even get a dancer through to choreography during audition week, it’s just plain not good enough.
I really thought they were going to send Mitchell home. I don’t know really any routine where I remember him being any good. I remember Alex doing some good memorable numbers and Ricky I think just had to deal with Ryan’s overacting. So overall, even though Mitchell has awesome solos, he’s not cut for the show. if he’s not the next boy to go, i’m going to be shocked. I’m pretty happy the judges can’t save him anymore because whenever he comes on, I just want to skip the routine. Although I think Caitlyn is pretty okay.

Agree with Suzanne. It was nice to hear a guest judge actually give some criticism and, as a fan, I mostly agreed with him.
I thought Cat mentioned at the beginning of the show that Jesse Tyler Ferguson was a Broadway performer… what qualifications do you require?

Does anybody know where to find the whole Canadian shows (not just the dance numbers) on the Net?
Mary and Tony and Melanie were all on the Canadian show Monday. I hope they collect frequent flier miles!
It will be interesting to see tomorrow’s results.
