The preview for 'Surprise Homecoming' gets me every time. Which other TV previews have made you cry?

I know the moments shown in the previews for TLC’s Surprise Homecoming are meant to be joyous, but I’ve got to be honest, this preview turned me into a ridiculous puddle of tears.

It felt almost scary to be that instantly impacted by something on TV. But they (they = evil preview trolls at TLC who, I theorize, collect tears in exchange for eternal youth) caught me off guard. The promo for the show, which captures the surprise reunions of military families, started off like a promo for Army Wives. Then, bam! Inspiring music, screams of joy, children running to their father, a mother crying. Too much. Also, highly effective. (I set my DVR.)

I’ve written previously about my sometimes overemotional response to commercials, but I generally find myself less impacted by TV show previews. I’ve gotten chills from them before (see Lost finale and Bones‘ 100 episode), but very rarely will a promo for a show leave me in tears.

When was the last time that happened to you, PopWatchers? I remember the promo for ER‘s series finale made me teary, but we’re talking full-on ugly cry here!

The promo for Michael Scott’s last episode of “The Office” (with Jim telling him he was the best boss he’d ever had) made me more emotional than the actual episode. I blame that damn tinkling piano music in the promos.

      Definitely agree with that one.

The trailer for “Dolphin Tale” KILLS me. I’ll have to go see it alone so no one recognizes the crazy 30-yr-old sobbing over a disabled dolphin as she exits the theater.

Oops – TELEVISION trailers. Sorry. In that case, another vote for “Surprise Homecoming.” I tear up everytime I see it, and not just because of Billy Ray’s soul patch.

Any moment involving the Taylor’s in Friday Night Lights makes me weep.

Oh my gosh, I agree. There was a preview with Riggins and Lyla, when she asks him what do you want, and he says you, twice, and it was just a beautiful preview. Ugh, that show…

sorry – realized what i said wasn’t about the Taylors. But FNL-related!

The previews for the Jaycee Dugard interview had me teary. What a amazing yet horrible story that woman has.

I love the show on Lifetime, “Coming Home.” I don’t know that this will be as good, but anything that gives our troops the welcome home and recognition they deserve, I’m all for.

That show’s commercials got me every time. Now, I know better, and I change the channel whenever these ads come on.

I can’t watch those ASPCA commercials with all the abused dogs and cats on it. Breaks my heart anyone would abuse a helpless animal.

    • Regina George

The ASPCA commericals definitely. And also, one time I started crying during a Secret Millionaire promo.

        Totally…

    • Elaine Bennes

      I agree 200%

This is a movie one, but they show it on TV so I say it counts.. the previews for the new Winnie the Pooh movie.

Also, the Smuckers’ jams commercial when one of the little boys says no one asks him what he wants to be when he grows up.

    • CSS

Completely agree on Winnie the Pooh. I wonder if that resonates w/ the younger generations, or just us that grew up w/ it? (I’m a child of the 70s.)

      • 14 year old boy

No effect on me at all. I was born in 1997 and dont think I’ve ever watched Winnie the Pooh.

  • Tool

The Wendy’s commercial about the Bacon-ater. I lose it.

  • Ms. Chanandler Bong

As a former Navy brat, I had to stand on a hot and humid boat dock for HOURS for my dad to get off the various aircraft carriers he was on. I feel gypped!

Ol’ Billy Ray cares so much he hasn’t even bothered to learn the different ranks/rates of the services. The show I saw he called a 2nd class petty officer a sergeant. He’s just in it for the bucks. They could have at least found a “celebrity” that served.
