Jason Segel could get me to see anything, including 'Bad Teacher' this weekend

I have never been shy about my crushing on Jason Segel with you, PopWatchers. Between those spectacular Muppets trailers, his hilarious Letterman appearance (honestly, how many people would show that picture on that air?), and his recent impromptu karaoke rendition of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” with a blow-up doll and his Five-Year Engagement co-star John Krasinski in Ann Arbor, Mich. (trust me, it’s not as weird as you think), I have had plenty of reasons to post my admiration for the star.

So, you would think I’d be deterred when the less-than-stellar reviews for Bad Teacher started coming in. (Entertainment Weekly‘s Owen Gleiberman gave it a hardly passing “C” grade.) READ FULL STORY »

'Park and Rec' curmudgeon Ron Swanson is what he eats

When the Emmy nominations come out on July 14, Nick Offerman’s name better be announced for Best Supporting Actor. So help me, Ayn Rand. His government-hating bureaucrat Ron Swanson on Parks and Rec is not only the most lovable curmudgeon since Archie Bunker, but he’s the greatest inspiration for viral art going. Take a look at the latest piece of NBC-sanctioned art dedicated to our favorite carnivore, below… READ FULL STORY »

Celebrities mourn Peter Falk on Twitter

Categories: In Memoriam

Peter Falk, beloved character actor who starred in Columbo and The Princess Bride, passed away last night. The two-time Oscar nominee had been battling Alzheimer’s disease for three years at the time of his death. He was 83 years old. Here’s what some of his celebrity fans have Tweeted about his eclectic career:

Michael McKean: “As many film fans know, Falk was already an angel. The rest is just paperwork.”

Kevin Pollak: “Peter Falk will always be one of my favorite actors. Check his work in Murder Inc. Oscar-nominated, I believe. Sad…” READ FULL STORY »

Would you watch 'Jersey Shore' without the original cast?

My obsession with Jersey Shore is unfortunately well-documented, so you can imagine the explosive mix of emotions I felt earlier today, when rumors started circulating that MTV was planning to replace the original Shore cast — whose paychecks are swelling at roughly the same rate as their pectorals — with a new crew of tandroid gym-freaks with colorful nicknames and self-esteem issues. MTV has since denied the recasting; the network told EW, “We love the present cast, and their summer adventures have just begun.” The original cast has already filmed the upcoming fourth season in Italy, and is currently filming a fifth season back in Jersey. Warren Beatty's new flick to chronicle Howard Hughes' affair with a younger woman, but who is the mystery lass?

In a week where unsettling May-December romances have made headlines (jilted groom Hugh Hefner is filming a special about getting dumped by ex-fiance Crystal Harris, a woman 60 years his junior, while we all tried to scrub off the news that Lost actor Doug Anthony Hutchinson married a 16-year-old), it’s fitting that Warren Beatty’s upcoming film surrounding the latter years of Howard Hughes’ life will feature his affair(s) with much young women.

Beatty, 74, will not only be stepping behind the camera for the first time in 13 years, but he’ll also be portraying the infamous Hughes, who despite becoming a germophobic recluse, still found time to seduce — and carry on affairs with — much younger women. READ FULL STORY »

'House' alum Lisa Edelstein heads to 'The Good Wife': Are you dying for her to showdown with Julianna Margulies?

After a rather mind-blowing season 2 for The Good Wife, we were all left wondering: How will series creators Robert and Michelle King up the ante for the show’s coming third season? Well, here’s a step in the right direction: EW has confirmed TV Line’s report that Lisa Edelstein, who recently decided not to return to Fox’s drama House, will be joining the cast of CBS’ beloved drama for a multi-episode arc beginning this fall.

We here at EW are big fans of Edelstein, of course, but that’s not the only reason that her addition seems like a good move. It’s juicy in so many ways. First, she’s been tapped to play a lawyer and poker player whose, TV Line reports, “sexiness is enhanced by her obvious intelligence.” One word: Hot.

But then, it’s also rumored that her character — who hasn’t been named yet — has a past with lawyering honcho Will (Josh Charles). READ FULL STORY »

'Team Fortress 2' is free; Work productivity at an all-time low

Categories: Videogames

In a move guaranteed to disappoint my editors and all bosses everywhere, Valve has officially released their beloved multiplayer game Team Fortress 2 for free on the Internet. The game was originally released as the George Harrison of The Orange Box (Half-Life 2: Episode Two was Paul McCartney, Portal was John Lennon, and Ringo played the drums, did you know?). Now it’s online, totally available, for free. Do yourself a favor. You see that pile of work you have on your desk? Push it into the trash bin, take the trash bin outside, fill it with lighter fluid, and set it on fire. Then go back to your desk and play some Team Fortress 2. Let Monday handle the consequences.

MGM readying 'WarGames' remake: Who should log-on to star?

wargames

The world has changed since WarGames was the fifth biggest blockbuster of 1983. The cold war ended. Suicidal terrorists replaced nuclear mutually assured destruction as the ultimate nightmare. And computers, thankfully, got much, much, much smaller. In other words, it’s a great time to resurrect the story of a mischievous American teenager who nearly starts a war when he hacks into the military’s most powerful computer, as Deadline reported that MGM has decided to do. For one thing, Matthew Broderick’s whiz kid isn’t some rare oddball anymore. Hackers have long since become a staple of techno-thrillers, and you only have to look to recent headlines — like the 19-year-old British kid who cracked the CIA computers — for evidence of our real-world technological vulnerability. In addition, today’s audience is much-more computer savvy; even your parents can follow a complex plot full of high-tech mumbo-jumbo. READ FULL STORY »

'SYTYCD' results make fans angry. You won't like them when they're angry.

Oh, Uncle Nigel. Like many family members, you frustrate me as much as you amuse me with your stories of eating penny candy while rolling your hoop on the way to the latest Mary Pickford matinee as a boy. But as of last night, you might as well be my estranged uncle. Though last week, we were met with a pleasant, non-elimination surprise during So You Think You Can Dance‘s results show, this week, we were dealt a tragic shocker (SPOILER ALERT): The ousting of early favorites Wadi Jones, Missy Morelli, Iveta Lukosiute, and Nick Young.

It’s not only tragic because fellow Bottom-6 dweller, Ryan Ramirez, delivered a middling solo, and probably deserved the boot over the long-legged, breathtakingly skilled Iveta. It’s heart-breaking because, last week, Nigel had the chance to eliminate some of the competition’s less talented dancers: READ FULL STORY »
