All-time best movie kiss: Does anything even come close to 'The Notebook'?

the-notebook

A kiss is just a kiss. Except for when it’s vying for bragging rights to the greatest kiss in the history of movies.

Last night on the red carpet of the MTV Movie Awards, we asked some of the stars in attendance what their all-time favorite film kiss is. And while some cited the 2011 Best Kiss nominees — like Nicki Minaj who told EW, “The one in Black Swan is pretty darn hot between Mila [Kunis] and Natalie [Portman]” — more went by the way of classics. (To see what some of your favorite celebrities selected, click here.)

But, PopWatchers, we want to know what you think is the all-time best movie kiss. Much to my horror/surprise, I found myself agreeing with the one celeb who has been part of some, er, interesting, kissing of her own lately, Selena Gomez. READ FULL STORY »

How will Rep. Anthony Weiner's good friend Jon Stewart cover his scandal?

Weiner-Stewart

The news broke late this afternoon that Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-New York), admitted that he did, in fact, send inappropriate pictures of himself and engaged in lewd conversations with at least six women he conversed with via the Internet. In a tearful press conference, Weiner confessed that he’d covered up his initial story about his Twitter being hacked when the underwear photo had leaked, and told reporters on Monday, “I then continued with that story — to stick to that story — which was a hugely regrettable mistake.”

The admission, of course, set off a flurry of opinions and criticism from bloggers, website commenters, journalists, and politicians alike. But we’re especially curious what Jon Stewart’s musings on this revelation will be. READ FULL STORY »

Is Dwayne Johnson Hollywood's rock-solid sequel savior?

If Fast Five‘s record-breaking opening weekend proved anything, it’s that moviegoers love fast cars and franchises — especially if star Dwayne Johnson is attached. In April, the professional wrestler-turned-actor (which, let’s face it, pretty much translates to barely clothed actor-turned-slightly more clothed actor) helped the Fast & the Furious films continue on their upward trajectory, attracting new fans to the furiously money-making films. But it’s not the first time the actor has successfully hopped on board an already existing franchise: His first star-making turn was in 2001′s follow-up to The Mummy, The Mummy Returns. He impressed in 2005′s sorta Get Short sequel, Be Cool. He boasted a role in Tyler Perry’s 2010 Why Did I Get Married? follow-up, Why Did I Get Married Too? He’s set to appear on screens this fall in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. And, finally, EW has confirmed Deadline’s report that Johnson’s in talks for a role in G.I. Joe: Cobra Strikes.

With the exception of Be Cool — and the yet-to-be-released Journey 2 — all these sequels were relative hits in their genres. So what is it about Johnson that attracts audiences to already existing franchises? What makes him, as my colleague Darren Franich called him, Franchise Viagra? READ FULL STORY »

'Saving Private Ryan': Has a movie ever sent you overseas?

saving_private_ryan

When Saving Private Ryan came out in the summer of 1998, a few years after the 50th anniversary of the crucial D-Day landings in Normandy, France, the entire culture was soaking in Greatest Generation nostalgia that honored the humble folk who were raised during a Great Depression but answered the call to fight tyranny in order keep the world free.

The film was a paralyzing experience — from the harrowing assault on Omaha Beach to Tom Hanks’ Capt. Miller’s last gasping words to Matt Damon’s titular G.I. When I first saw the film, there were audible sobs from the audience beginning with the initial beach assault, but the film ended in absolute silence. When the lights came on, it became clear that no one had moved from their seat. READ FULL STORY »

Apple CEO and Randian superhero Steve Jobs arrived at the annual Apple Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco with a simple message for Apple’s customers: “You truly belong here with us among the clouds.” Witness iCloud, a new internet service which will allow users to sync up information stored on various Apple devices via a cloud-based storage system. (The company tried something somewhat similar with the much-despised MobileMe; Jobs, to his credit, said that the service “was not our finest hour.”) As reported by the L.A. Times, users will get 5 gigabytes of free data to store in the cloud — less gigs than Gmail, but Jobs pointedly pointed out that the iCloud will be advertisement-free. READ FULL STORY »

'Red Faction: Armageddon' review: In which you save Mars by smashing it to pieces

Categories: Games

While playing Red Faction: Armageddon — the new Martian spelunker-shooter about an exceptionally dim-witted space miner who accidentally causes planet-destroying natural disasters and then tries to fix them with a very big hammer — I found myself thinking that, in hindsight, Rampage has turned out to be one of the most important videogames ever. In Rampage, you played as a giant ape who was totally not King Kong, a giant lizard who was totally not Godzilla, or a giant werewolf who was totally not stolen from any famous movie franchise, because, for some ungodly reason, there has never been a movie about a giant werewolf. The gameplay was simple: You smashed things. Specifically, you smashed buildings, punching them into oblivion until their foundations crumbled. When you were done crushing one city, you moved on to another one. READ FULL STORY »

The Alamo Drafthouse has a way more effective anti-talking/texting warning than 'Silence is Golden'

Austin’s Alamo Drafthouse, which EW has named the best movie theater in America, has a strict no talking policy dating back to 1997, which also prohibits patrons from texting. Recently, a moviegoer kept texting after two warnings, and she was ejected from the theater without a refund, as per the theater’s policy. She left the theater an angry, expletive-filled voicemail — which it has now turned into a ”Don’t Talk or Text” PSA that will be played in front of all of its R-rated movies this weekend. Brilliant. Below, you’ll find the bleeped version. (Play the uncensored version here.) This is a friendly PopWatch reminder that the light on your cellphone IS a distraction for those seated around you, no matter what kind of movie you’re watching (popcorn or Oscar contender), how bad it is, or how quickly you can move your thumbs. And to this caller, who says she’s texted in every other theater in Austin and no one minded — they did.  READ FULL STORY »

Will 'Horrible Bosses' finally -- FINALLY -- make Charlie Day a huge star?

We really, really like Charlie Day ’round these parts. In fact, a few of us here at EW — particularly my colleague Mandi Bierly — have been vocal about our hopes that the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia MVP will finally get the recognition he deserves, be it with an Emmy nomination or by becoming a full-fledged movie star.

Things certainly seem to be on that path as the 35-year-old actor just earned a Critics Choice Television Award nod for Best Actor in a Comedy Series for his work as the delightfully demented Kitten Mittons salesman/Paddy’s Pub co-owner Charlie Kelly on Sunny. (He’ll be going up against perennial awards season heavyweights like Alec Baldwin, Steve Carell, and Jim Parsons in the category.) Lob on the fact that Day nailed his witty onstage banter at Sunday night’s MTV Movie Awards and that he’s starring in the upcoming comedy Horrible Bosses — in which he gets sexually harassed by Jennifer Aniston and buddies up with Jason Sudeikis and Jason Bateman to kill their aforementioned bad bosses — and this just might be his sunniest summer ever.

Still, sadly, we’ve been here before. READ FULL STORY »

Mini-Warbler singing 'Glee' tunes is too young to be a 'Teenage Dream' -- but still adorable

Forget The Glee Project. We have the next cast member right here.

In this video circling the net, a little boy does his take on “Teenage Dream” as sung by the Warblers, and I have to say, this Grinch’s heart just grew two sizes. From his orange-lined jacket to the oversized tie and dance moves, this kid is too precious to handle. (My favorite part is how he imitates the ad-libbing around the 1:30 mark.) I’m pretty determined not to have children (it’s better for us all…), but if I was guaranteed a Warbler-bot, I think I’d have to  reconsider.

Agree, PopWatchers? Cutest Viral Video of the Day? READ FULL STORY »

'Book of Mormon': Listen to a selection of songs from the Broadway hit!

Book-Of-Mormon

Because you probably haven’t yet seen Broadway’s Book of Mormon, written by South Park‘s Trey Parker and Matt Stone along with Avenue Q co-creator Bobby Lopez, you might still be wondering what all the fuss is about. What’s up with the 14 Tony nominations? And the sold-out performances? And the grade A rave in EW and all the other glowing reviews?

Well, now’s your chance to find out — we’re streaming a selection of songs from the show’s cast album to give you the opportunity to hear some of these Tony-nominated songs for yourself.

Here’s the set-up: Two young Mormon missionaries (Tony nominees Josh Gad and Andrew Rannells) are sent to recruit converts in poverty-stricken Uganda. But once they get there… well, you’ll just have to hear for yourself.

PLEASE NOTE: Many of these songs contain adult themes and strong language that is not appropriate for children and that some adults may find offensive.

To hear the entire cast album and get more exclusive content from the musical, head to the official Book of Mormon Facebook page. READ FULL STORY »
