'Halo 4' trailer: Master Chief returns

Categories: Geekery, Videogames
Halo-4

The last time we saw Master Chief — the iconically faceless and gravel-voiced protagonist of the Halo franchise — he was entering cryonic hibernation in the deepest reaches of space. It was an eerily poetic way for the Halo trilogy to wrap up, leaving the character back where we found him in the opening moments of Halo 1. But heck with poetry, we’ve got a franchise to feed! Thus, yesterday Microsoft introduced the first trailer for Halo 4. Suffice it to say, Master Chief wakes up, and everything instantly goes to hell. Watch the video below: READ FULL STORY »

'Groovy!': Check out the trailer for the new 'Evil Dead' video game iPhone and iPad app

evil_dead_game

They say evil comes in many forms. And so does the Evil Dead! Since Bruce Campbell‘s Ash and his pals made the mistake of heading out to the woods in Sam Raimi’s original 1981 horror classic, the movie has inspired sequels, comics, a notoriously generous number of DVD editions, and even a musical. Now Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures company has partnered with Trigger Apps to produce an Evil Dead shooter game for the iPhone and the iPad. The gore-drenched, boomstick-featuring, Deadite slaughterthon goes on sale today and you can check out the not-for-kids trailer below.

Take a look and tell us what you think. READ FULL STORY »

Tonys 2011: Nominee Tammy Blanchard on 'How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying' and, of course, Daniel Radcliffe

She’s gorgeous and talented — with one Emmy win and two Tony nods under her belt — but How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying’s Tammy Blanchard isn’t exactly a famous face. Yet. The Best Featured Actress in a Musical contender recently called EW to chat about feeling born in the wrong decade (she earned her Emmy for playing Judy Garland in Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows and scored her first Tony nomination for Gypsy), living in Jersey, and being constantly asked about Daniel Radcliffe.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: You once said that you’d be a bigger star if it were the 1940s or 1950s.
TAMMY BLANCHARD: I’m really good at playing women from that time. Judy Garland and Gypsy Rose Lee are just examples. I just feel like I would have latched onto some big studio. I would have had the five films in a row to prove myself. It just seems like once you got in the door back in the day, it was somehow a little easier once you proved that you were talented. And I have the facial structure. Once they put the old Hollywood hair on me, I could be stepping right out of the ’50s or ’60s. READ FULL STORY »

E3 2011: EA and Ubisoft tease 'Mass Effect 3,' 'Rayman Origins,' and more

Mass-Effects-3

Monday’s EA and Ubisoft press conferences were like velvety sheets of prosciutto and water buffalo mozzarella in the panino that is E3: Day One. Nestled between two hearty slices of Microsoft and Sony-infused ciabatta, this deliciously cured and vital content from two of the industry’s biggest developer-publishers focused on some of their most solid franchises, ranging from first-person shooters to a cartoony, limbless mascot. Read more about four of EA and Ubisoft’s marquis titles that caught our attention and ran with it like a Red Bull-fueled Rabbid: READ FULL STORY »

Burning Questions! 'X-Men: First Class': Why is Professor X British? And where have I seen this person before?

It’s another week of EW’s summer movie burning questions. This week: X-Men: First Class. If you have some, don’t be shy! Ask away!

Professor X is clearly British in the movie, but he grew up in Westchester (where the mansion is located). Explain. – H.B.
Professor X is American in the comic books (born and raised in NYC), but it’s known — as shown in the movie — that he attended Oxford. My first theory? The Professor might have the power of mind control, but perhaps he can’t control his own accent. It happens to me all the time when I’m around British people; I’m bloody influential, old bean. Theory No. 2: Remember that episode of Friends when Ross turned British for his graduate class? Yes, Professor X might, in fact, just be trying to sound smarter and more interesting. It’s working. But honestly, I posed this question to professor of comic books, Darren Franich, who brings us theory No. 3: “I think he’s supposed to have one of those mid-20th century upper-class American accents, like FDR. Fun fact: It’s referred to as ‘Mid-Atlantic’.” That wasn’t a “fun fact” at all, Professor D, but certainly helpful. As I hope this answer was to you, H.B. Bonus mini-poll:  READ FULL STORY »

Jack Tretton, the president and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, wasted no time addressing what he called the “elephant in the room” — the PlayStation Network’s month-long outage after a hacker breached the service and gained access to personal information for 77 million accounts. “You are the lifeblood of the company,” Tretton told the 6,000 folks in attendance at Sony’s E3 press conference, held Monday evening in the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena. “I want to apologize personally and on behalf of the company for causing any anxiety.” Tretton also joked about the public-relations nightmare, noting that the media cherish scandals like the PSN outage. “To all of our esteemed members of the press, I say, ‘You’re welcome,’” Tretton quipped. Chris Harrison blogs 'The Bachelorette' episode 3

Chris-Harrison

While I’m sitting here writing this blog all I really want to know is what all of you think of what went down this week and how it all happened. I’ve been asked several times this week if I think Bentley is the biggest “villain” we’ve ever had on this show. My first thought is that’s really something for you guys to judge, not me. My second thought is the “villain” title really doesn’t do justice to what went down here. It softens the blow and simplifies things too much in my opinion, but again that’s really up to you guys. There’s a lot more I will say about Bentley but I do want to talk about several other things, as this was an eye-opening episode from top to bottom. READ FULL STORY »

'The Bachelorette' episode 3: 'They say one man's trash is another man's treasure'

Wouldn’t you have loved to be in on the conversation between Ashley and the producers about tonight’s date? Hey Ashley, we’ve got an idea for a dream date. We’ll invite ten guys who are desperately trying to impress you — and who you are even more desperately trying to impress — and have them “roast” you with clumsily constructed insult comedy. Doesn’t that sound fun?? For those of you who’ve seen tonight’s episode (and spoiler alert if you haven’t!) you know that the date ends exactly the way one would expect — with Ashley in tears. Stay tuned for my full TV recap later tonight (UPDATE: Click the links to read Kristen’s full Bachelorette week 3 recap and Chris Harrison’s exclusive Bachelorette blog), but in the meantime, answer these burning questions: Bentley — boring douchebag or budding sociopath? William — delusional about a career in comedy or really delusional about a career in comedy? JP — rebound or real thing? Go to it, rose lovers!

'Gears of War 3,' 'Halo 4,' and Kinect, Kinect, Kinect: Highlights from Microsoft's Xbox 360 E3 press briefing

Years from now — probably decades, possibly centuries — humanity will likely look back upon the early years of this decade with regard to fully immersive holographic entertainment (i.e. the Holodeck) as we today look back upon the first Victrolas or the ENIAC with regard to the iPod and iPad.

That was the thought that kept running through my head during Microsoft’s Xbox 360 press conference at the Galen Center near downtown Los Angeles that unofficially inaugurated the 2011 Electronic Entertainment Expo (a.k.a. E3), which kicks into full gear tomorrow through Thursday, June 9. While the event provided more glimpses at highly anticipated games like Gears of War 3, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 — an a tantalizing first look at Halo 4 – it was pretty much entirely about the Kinect, the voice-and-motion controlled gizmo that first arrived for the Xbox 360 last year.  READ FULL STORY »

Stunning new 'Old Republic' trailer returns Star Wars to its nuts-and-blaster-bolts basics: Watch it here!

Strap yourself in, ‘cause you’re about to take your first step into a whole different galaxy.

Any fan of Star Wars video games could tell you that Lucasarts, EA Games, and developer BioWare have released eye-poppingly kinetic trailers for Star Wars: The Old Republic over the past couple years. It’s been an achingly extended pre-release campaign that’s turned the elusive massively multiplayer game into the mouse-and-pixel equivalent of The Tree of Life or Chinese Democracy – the anticipation almost seems more important than the project itself. (EA still hasn’t yet set a release date, but a rep suggests it will come out in 2011, “when it meets the quality BioWare and Star Wars fans expect.”) So today another trailer for SW: TOR was released, only this one is supposed to be the actual cinematic intro to the game. And Holy Sith, if this doesn’t make you want to revisit that Galaxy Far, Far Away, you must be frozen in carbonite. Check it out after the jump: READ FULL STORY »
