'Salt 2' is in development: Could this be Angelina Jolie's next action franchise?

Last year’s Salt earned considerable press long before it hit theaters because of a curious bit of gender-bending recasting: The titular CIA agent on the run was originally going to be played by Tom Cruise, but when Angelina Jolie expressed interest, “Edwin Salt” became “Evelyn Salt.” Since Jolie is essentially the only female action movie star, it seemed like a positively progressive maneuver — an indication that summer blockbusters didn’t have to resemble a frat house. Unfortunately, Salt itself was far from perfect — EW’s Owen Gleiberman gave it a B — and although it grossed $300 million globally, it underperformed compared to Jolie’s earlier, less expensive action-fest Wanted. Nevertheless, EW has confirmed that Sony has hired Salt screenwriter Kurt Wimmer to draft a script for Salt 2. Can the sequel improve on the original? READ FULL STORY »

Nintendo Wii U: We've played the successor to the Wii!

Categories: E3, On the Scene, Tech, Videogames

Today, Nintendo finally revealed the successor to its blockbuster home console system the Wii, the curiously titled Wii U. The console itself looks like a slightly tweaked version of the shiny white brick Wii users know so well; the only obvious upgrade was its ability to provide a true high-definition picture, something Nintendo fans have been clamoring for since the Wii first hit shelves in 2006. The real innovation, however, is the Wii U controller (pictured), which features a 6.2 inch HD touchscreen, microphone, gyroscope, accelerometer, front-facing camera, two analog controllers, and more buttons than than a Black Eyed Peas costume.

Although the company had no firm release date other than “next year,” and no price point to speak of, EW was offered a sneak peek at what to expect from the system. As has been the case with new Nintendo gadgets over the last five years, the experience was long on smiles and charm — and lingering questions as well.  READ FULL STORY »

Rep. Anthony Weiner's new foe, the Internet, reveals 1996 'Cosmo' bachelor spread

There’s a photo making its way around the Internet that Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-N.Y.), probably hoped would disappear forever. That, of course, being the Cosmo Bachelor spread from 1996 that just-so-happened to get up on the web just one day after the troubled politician admitted he sent lewd photographs of himself to women via Twitter. PopWatch Confessional: Did you put a line from a song or movie in your yearbook?

After you take a minute to absorb the news that Dakota Fanning has just graduated from high school (I’ll wait… ) let’s recall something from our own glory days, shall we, PopWatchers? Though most of us can’t boast a Hollywood actress in our class, we’ve all gone one thing that, for better or worse, will forever remind us about those trying four years: the yearbook.

Sure, high school photos are the most unintentionally hilarious and horrifying aspect of a yearbook (they’ve devoted entire websites to it, after all), but I’m personally a fan of reading what people chose as their personal quote. READ FULL STORY »

Katie Couric calls Sarah Palin 'fascinating,' says Donald Trump acted like 'a jackass'

What has Katie Couric been up to since her stint on the CBS Evening News came to an end last month? Well, as the TV vet told Jay Leno on The Tonight Show Monday, she’s been helping her daughter study for her final exams, discovering the wonders of tequila and karaoke, and getting ready for her next project: an Oprah-esque daytime talk show for ABC. But because anyone interviewing Couric is legally obligated to bring up Sarah Palin, Leno also took a few moments to ask the former anchor whether she thinks Palin’s going to actually run for president in 2012.

“You know, I think that’s anyone’s guess,” Couric answered. “Sometimes, she’ll retreat for awhile and then she’ll pop back up. I think she’s really fascinating. She’s really polarizing — I think even people who don’t like her are fascinated by her. They’re almost motivated by their dislike of her.”

Fair enough! But what does Couric think of Donald “I Will Not Seek The Presidency” Trump, who recently said that he might actually run for president after all? (Sigh.) “Because I live in New York, and I’ve seen Donald at various events, you know, he actually can be a very, very nice person with a good heart,” said Couric. “But I think he was just acting like a jackass for awhile, don’t you?” READ FULL STORY »

John Krasinski whiffs in latest Red Sox/Yankees prank against Alec Baldwin

The second-place Boston Red Sox open up a three-game set against the first-place New York Yankees tonight, which means two things. One, that a man wearing a Big Papi jersey in Penn Station this morning better be faster and tougher than the real Big Papi, or he won’t make it anywhere near the Bronx. And two, Alec Baldwin and John Krasinski are due for Round 3 of their New Era shenanigans. Recall that last we saw the It’s Complicated co-stars, Baldwin had punched Krasinski in the face and urged him to get plastic surgery. So I don’t blame Krasinski for seeking revenge by billboarding Baldwin’s pooch. But much like the old Boston Cheers gang, who were always outclassed and outmaneuvered in their ongoing rivalry with Gary’s Old Towne Tavern, the Office star might be in over his head. This dog don’t hunt. READ FULL STORY »

Disney Channel Original Movies: A look back at the Golden Era

I happened to catch the High School Musical spin-off Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure while watching a friend’s kid sister last weekend, and I have to say, once and for all, that I’m totally and completely over Disney Channel Original Movies… and it’s about time. Even toward the end of what I consider the Golden Era of Disney Originals — starting in 1999 with Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century and coming to a screeching halt in 2003 with The Even Stevens Movie – I was probably a little too old to be watching them. I remember joking about the latest cheesy DOMP (Disney Original Motion Picture… I know that’s not what they’re actually called) in Geometry class even while loving every minute of it. Lady Gaga honored at fashion awards. What on Earth can she do next?

Everyone went gaga for Lady Gaga last night during the Council of Fashion Designers of America awards, where the eccentric singer picked up an honor for being the year’s top style icon.

In the video below, some stylish folk and Kathy Griffin sing the praises of the songstress, who showed up to the ceremony in a predictably unpredictable outfit, complete with mile-high platform shoes, teal hair, and a spiked bust area. READ FULL STORY »

'Bachelorette': Watch Bentley's cruel exit and the worst group date EVER

Last night’s episode of The Bachelorette was the one fans were waiting for: Bentley, who’s been telling the camera for some time that he couldn’t care less about Ashley but who she inexplicably fell in love with, left the show. Personally, I was hoping he’d come clean to her so she would get the chance to slap his smug face, but what he did was far more cruel and cowardly: He waited until the morning after he’d assured her they were on the same page to tell her that he missed his daughter too much to share his heart with her now — but not to rule out something in the future (“… dot dot dot”). Watch the footage below. READ FULL STORY »
