New 'Star Trek' game will let you play as Kirk or Spock. Which would you choose?

Categories: Star Trek, Videogames

Star Trek has a shaky history in the videogame world. For every underrated gem — like the great Macintosh graphic adventure Judgment Rites — there’s a whole host of lame Trek games with interchangeable names like Armada or Legacy or New Worlds. But today, Paramount unveiled the first trailer for a 2012 Trek game, based on the rebooted universe of J. J. Abrams’ 2009 film, and the game looks pretty cool, allowing you to play in co-op mode as either Kirk or Spock. With lots of zero-g floating and phaser battles in dark starship hallways, the game looks a little bit like Dead Space and Mass Effect — both of which are very good things. But the trailer also forces you to ask yourself: Would you rather play as the dynamo Enterprise captain, or as his cooler-than-ice second office? Check out the video and vote in our poll. Luigi is truly the most depressing videogame character ever

In the short, eventful history of videogaming, is there anyone more fundamentally tragic than Mario’s brother, Luigi? He is one of the most well-known game heroes. He has starred in several of the greatest and most popular games in history. In sharp contrast to his older brother — a failed physician-turned-racecar driver who throws horrible, endless parties and resembles a less fashionable clone of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec — Luigi is tall, slender, and affable. He can jump extremely high. He owns a mansion. And yet, he is forever trapped in the shadow of his more famous sibling. No one will ever refer to Luigi as “Super.” Sure, he can play for free at most golf and tennis clubs, but only if he brings his brother. The poor sap has an unrequited crush on Princess Daisy — one of Mario’s ex-girlfriends! Everything about Luigi sounds like a cruel cosmic joke designed to remind him that he is not Mario. According to the long-form birth certificate, his full name is “Luigi Mario.” By way of comparison, imagine if Richard Nixon’s full name was “Richard Milhous Uglier-And-Less-Charismatic-Than-JFK Nixon.” READ FULL STORY »

Patrick Wilson: An appreciation for one of Hollywood's most versatile stars

Noticed Patrick Wilson lately? You may not have — he’s been flying relatively, and tragically, under-the-radar since 2009′s Watchmen. And that’s even considering the guy starred in three films last year! But after seeing him as a homicidal evangelist in the trailer for The Ledge, it occurred to me that he could be poised for some big-screen attention, similar to what he garnered during Little Children‘s 2006 run. And he certainly would deserve such recognition: When I first noticed him in 2005′s Hard Candy, as the creepy object of Ellen Page’s sadistic yet completely valid vigilante justice, I discovered one of the few actors who seems to seamlessly float between genres with enviable ease.

Let’s look at this. Before Hard Candy, he was nominated for both a Golden Globe and an Emmy for playing Joe Pitt in the critically lauded miniseries Angels in America. That was his first TV role ever. And he was a double-nominee. Breakout awards show favorite: Check! READ FULL STORY »

What should Alec Baldwin's campaign slogan be if he runs for mayor of New York?

The Anthony Weiner scandal has poked its head into the pop-culture conversation, and if it ultimately costs the congressman his ambitions to run for mayor of New York City, it may open the door for an actor to throw his hat in the ring. The Daily cites sources close to Alec Baldwin hinting that the 30 Rock star is contemplating running for mayor in 2013. His rep, Matthew Hiltzik, fueled the rumors, telling EW only, “I wouldn’t rule it out.”

Baldwin has long expressed a fascination with politics, recently telling CNN’s Eliot Spitzer that running for office is “something that I’m very, very interested in.” Baldwin’s contract with 30 Rock expires at the end of next season, so it’s possible that the timing could be right for him to take the plunge. He certainly wouldn’t be the first actor to do so: Reagan, Arnold, Congressman “Gopher.” READ FULL STORY »

Jon Stewart faux-steps down as 'Daily Show' host due to Anthony Weiner coverage

Tuesday night, the question on everyone (including PopWatch‘s) mind was How will Jon Stewart cover that Weiner? Would the Daily Show host continue to go easy on his good friend Rep. Anthony Weiner, who admitted in a press conference Tuesday afternoon that he had posted a picture of a part of his own anatomy to Twitter and engaged in “inappropriate” online communications with at least six other women? After all, some outlets had criticized the host for his tame treatment of the scandal. After Monday’s Daily Show, EW’s own Ken Tucker thought Stewart’s loyalty to his friend was classy, but didn’t like that taking the bullet for his friend made him really unload on John Edwards. As Ken said, “Edwards became a way for Stewart to reassert his fearless-honesty cred while sidling around what he invariably referred to as ‘Anthony Weiner’s c—.’”

But! At the top of Tuesday’s Daily Show, Stewart staged his own press conference, apologized for wussing out, then “resigned” and stepped aside so that dirty Brit John Oliver could take over as host. But the genius in this is that Stewart cut his hand pretty badly while preparing a frozen margarita. Is that strawberry flavoring in there, or are you just bleeding out, man? UPDATE: He was bleeding out! A Comedy Central rep confirms that the host got six stitches in his hand following the taping. Video after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

On Meredith Vieira's last day, 'Today' staffers promise her they won't stop believin'

When the Today team finally said goodbye to co-anchor Meredith Vieira this morning while wearing custom “We Heart Meredith” t-shirts, there wasn’t a dry eye in or around Rockefeller Plaza. But before the last tearful tributes began, viewers were treated to a two-hour Viva Vieira sendoff that included plenty of highlight montages (remember when Miss Piggy questioned whether Meredith had the chops for the job?), commendations from the likes of Jack Black and Jay Leno, a special performance by Carole King (she sang “You’ve Got a Friend,” naturally), and a choreographed lipsynch to a certain Journey classic. Over the course of eight Harry Potter movies, we’ve watched stars Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint grow from adorably puckish tweens into moody teenagers into even-more-moody-but-those-are-the-times-we-live-in young adults. The final Harry Potter film will be emotionally brutalizing for audiences on July 15, but if you’d like a flashback to happier times, check out the video that Warner Bros. just released of the three actors in their very first group screen test for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
