At long last, 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' is a 'frozen' show

In anticipation of its official, no-really-we-mean-it-this-time opening night this Tuesday, June 14, the long-delayed, much-beleaguered Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark is officially a “frozen” show, according to a New York Times report. That means no more changes — to lyrics, choreography, etc. — after a record-setting 177 preview performances.  READ FULL STORY »

'The Glee Project': First impressions are everything, and I already can't decide who I like most!

Glee-Project

EW was the first to present to you the kids from The Glee Project, Oxygen’s reality show centered around finding the next cast member of Glee, and since then, the wanna-be misfits (strange paradox…) have released their first music video. Now I find myself in a first impression pickle a cynic like myself rarely experiences: I like a lot of them. Check out the video below, and then let’s chat: READ FULL STORY »

Why I love Ice-T and Coco as much as 'Ice loves Coco'

Who would have thought that dude with the ponytail from Law & Order: SVU and the woman who hosts “Thong Thursday” on her Twitter feed would be the two halves involved in our modern-day version of a fairy tale romance? Likely, very few, yet here are Ice-T and Coco, the latest Hollywood couple prepared to share their love on the small-screen in E!’s new reality series Ice Loves Coco, premiering June 12.

Give me any other couple in Hollywood, and I’d groan. (And, in fact, I have groaned.) But these two? Honestly, I don’t think I’ve been more excited for a new reality series since… is “ever” an option? Because I can’t help it: I love Ice-T and Coco almost as much as Ice loves Coco. They’re eccentric. They both support celebrating the female form, regardless of its shape. They’re both named after types of foods that, together, could inspire a Dunkin’ Donuts drink. And, most importantly, they renew my faith in love.

How sad is that? READ FULL STORY »

Musical version of 'Big Fish' bound for Broadway

Categories: Stage/Theater

The film-to-stage musical is alive and well. After a season chock-a-block of tuners based on movies (Elf, Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Sister Act, Catch Me if You Can, Priscilla Queen of the Desert), producers Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen have announced a Broadway-bound musical adaptation of Big Fish. The production, with music and lyrics by Tony nominee Andrew Lippa and book by John August, will take its cues from both the 1998 Daniel Wallace source novel and August’s own script for the 2003 Tim Burton film (pictured). Five-time Tony winner (and current nominee for The Scottsboro Boys) Susan Stroman will direct and choreograph. A cast has yet to be announced for the project, which aims to grace the Great White Way in Spring 2012.

Big Fish is not the only such film-to-stage musical adaptation in the works. Newsies (with a new book by Harvey Feirstein) will debut at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse in September. Ghost the Musical opens in London this month. And Leap of Faith premiered (though to ho-hum reviews) in L.A. last year. All three have eyes on Broadway. And, of course, there’s the Rocky musical, which hopes to hit New York in 2013.

Did Zach Galifianakis give away the plot of 'The Hangover Part III'? And, if so, do we like it?

Never mind the grumbling haters and the 35 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. With The Hangover Part II continuing to slash and burn its way through the box office ($384 million worldwide and counting), a third trip down amnesia lane for the Wolfpack is clearly inevitable. In the new issue of Rolling Stone, cover boy Zach Galifianakis confirms, “They want to do a Hangover III… I’m getting fricking phone calls already.” And he doesn’t stop there. In the interview, Galifianakis seems to spill the beans on the third film’s storyline as well, suggesting that the plot for The Hangover Part III could center on his demented manchild Alan escaping from a mental institution with a little help from his friends.  READ FULL STORY »

Steven Spielberg talks about 'Jaws' -- the greatest summer movie ever made

jaws

When Steven Spielberg’s Jaws hit theaters back on June 20, 1975, the modern-day summer movie was born. One of the first films ever to be widely released on a large number of screens across the country on a single day, Spielberg’s sea-faring saga redefined what it meant to be a blockbuster. On top of all of that, Jaws also happened to be a rollicking, enjoyable, and insanely scary movie, mixing popcorn thrills and the kind of character development you tend to only see in Oscar-bait prestige films. In a new interview about Jaws with Ain’t It Cool News, Spielberg talked about his nerve-wracking months on the fictional Amity Island (actually Martha’s Vineyard), how he gathered his cast, and Robert Shaw’s infamous U.S.S. Indianapolis scene (oh, and a few words for the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom haters out there — hint: blame George Lucas). Here are some of the more excerptable excerpts. READ FULL STORY »

Leonardo DiCaprio to try on black hat in 'Django Unchained'?

Any actor will tell you: It’s good to be bad. Playing bad is a hoot, and many actors, like Gary Oldman, built their career on portraying crazy-eyed villains capable of the most vile deeds. Superstar actors, on the other hand, can become handcuffed — if only temporarily — by a certain level of fame after audiences demand a certain heroic or darling character each and every time. Ask Will Smith or Julia Roberts or Clint Eastwood. So it’s admirable and refreshing to hear from Deadline that Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly in talks to play the villain in Quentin Tarantino’s next film, Django Unchained, the story of an escaped American slave who seeks vengeance on his cruel master. (Both DiCaprio and Tarantino’s reps have yet to respond to EW’s request for comment.) READ FULL STORY »

Is Jennifer Love Hewitt the worst actress of the last 25 years? Hewitt responds: 'Clearly, I need to learn French and go to Paris.'

It’s impossible to convert the subjective experience of artistry into an objective number-crunching ranking system. But that hasn’t stopped people from trying. Slate.com recently sifted through Rotten Tomatoes, the popular website that aggregates all the reviews of a film and grades them on a binary “fresh”/”rotten” critical scale, in an attempt to come up with the actors and actresses with the best track records in onscreen greatness. Get this: According to the study, Jennifer Love Hewitt has the worst track record of any movie actress in Hollywood. The conclusion derives from the fact that Hewitt has never starred in a film to earn a “fresh” rating.

When asked to comment, Hewitt released a statement to EW: “Clearly, I need to learn French and go to Paris to make some French films, since those seem to be the favorites of critics. And do they give trophies for this?” READ FULL STORY »

Mark Wahlberg talks up 'Fighter' sequel again: Good idea?

While accepting the Spike TV Award for Guy Movie of the Year, The Fighter‘s star and godfather Mark Wahlberg reiterated his intention to take “one more run” at the Micky Ward saga with another film. In a NSFW acceptance speech, Wahlberg reminded fans that Ward’s greatest moments in the ring — his epic trilogy with the late Arturo Gatti — weren’t included in the initial film, which nevertheless earned Oscars for co-stars Christian Bale and Melissa Leo. “We left [those] fights out for a reason,” he said, “because that’s for Fighter 2. We’re not going to do Fighter 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, but we’re going to do 2.” Watch his speech, which will air on Spike on June 10, after the jump. READ FULL STORY »
