In Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris, a frustrated screenwriter discovers some magic in the city’s 1920s past. But beginning in September, tourists in the City of Light can step into a very different auteur’s mind. David Lynch is opening Club Silencio, a restaurant based on the bizarre club in his 2001 thriller, Mulholland Drive, and the enigmatic director is taking a special interest in designing the interior of what will be a bar, concert hall, art library, and screening room. I assume there will be no band, but I’d expect the unexpected from an evening at Silencio. I’d make sure I knew where the exits were at all times, and if I should find a mysterious blue box in my jacket pocket, I’m gone! READ FULL STORY »

Whole Foods Rap: This one goes out to all my quinoa-loving b#$@$*s

If a disproportionate amount of your salary goes to shopping at Whole Foods, and an uncool portion of your Sunday is spent looking for a parking spot there, and if somehow these two activities make you feel equal parts righteous and annoyed, then you’ve probably already uploaded this video to your Facebook page. The rap spoof, written and performed by 37-year-old David Wittman with the help of L.A. and S.F.-based creative collective Fog and Smog, is a delightfully sharp send-up of the Whole Foods experience. Some girl in yoga pants is lookin’ at me funny/I’m just trying to find a decent Pinot Noir for under twenty! Watch the video after the jump. READ FULL STORY »

'The Voice' poll: Has Christina Aguilera's image rehab been successful?

Just a few months ago, Christina Aguilera was at a career low point. Over the span of about four weeks, she had messed up the words to the National Anthem at the Super Bowl, been arrested for public intoxication, stumbled at the Grammys, and gotten sued. Oh, and lest we forget, all that came right her album Bionic tanked, her movie Burlesque flopped, and she filed for divorce from her husband of five years. Phew! Maybe words can’t bring Xtina down, but it sure seemed like a string of public misfortunes could.

Then something wonderful happened: Aguilera’s next project, The Voice, became a bona fide hit. And like Idol judge Jennifer Lopez before her, suddenly, the public began to see the diva in a whole new light. READ FULL STORY »

'Marrying Hef' Lifetime special gets canceled. But think of all the wasted spin-off opportunities!

Dearly beloved PopWatchers, we are gathered here today to inform you that Marrying Hef — a Lifetime special that was set to chronicle the upcoming nuptials of 85-year-old Playboy founder Hugh Hefner to his fiance, 25-year-old Playmate Crystal Harris — has been postponed indefinitely since the couple’s announcement that they have canceled their wedding. Our deepest regrets and sincerest apologies.

Lifetime confirmed to EW that the network would “not be moving forward” with airing the special, which would have also shown the blessed event itself. This bums me out for a number of reasons, other than, obviously, the idea that true love could not prevail. (If those two crazy kids can’t make it, what chance do the rest of us have?!) I’m not only lamenting the loss of the Hef-Harris special, but also all the spin-offs that could have been: READ FULL STORY »

Has Hollywood turned its back on LeBron James?

It’s hard to recall now that at this time last year, LeBron James had the world eating out of his hand. Yes, his team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, had flamed out of the playoffs in rather embarrassing fashion, but free-agent King James was wanted by everyone. Chicago. New York. Miami. Los Angeles. They all bowed at his feet. What a difference a year makes.

Since losing to Dallas in the NBA Finals on Sunday, James has been scapegoated for choking in the games’ big moments and vilified for his petulant post-game behavior, which included telling reporters that “all the people that were rooting on me to fail, at the end of the day, they have to wake up tomorrow and have the same life that they had before they woke up today.” Classy.

The criticism and the jokes have been ruthless. (Why can’t LeBron make change for $1? He can never come up with that final quarter.) Even Betty White threw a jab. READ FULL STORY »

Broadway’s Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark made its official debut last night after overcoming months of delays, media ridicule, and the departure of original director Julie Taymor. But now the $70 million musical, which got a creative overhaul during a three week hiatus last month, faces its biggest challenge yet: Winning over the critics who widely panned it back in February. Samuel L. Jackson reads 'Go the F––k to Sleep'

The literary sensation Go the F–k to Sleep takes aim at horrible annoying children, sort of like how Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle took aim at horrible heartless plutocrats. Now, actor/Marvel mascot/general man-about-town Samuel L. Jackson has recorded a complete audiobook version of Adam Mansbach’s book, which is currently downloadable for free at Audible.com. Jackson prefaces his reading by explaining that, when he was reading stories to his daughter in her early years, he actually would tell her, “Go the f–k to sleep.” (Of course he did.) Jackson’s slow-burn parental exasperation — simultaneously tender, badass, and helpless — is truly ear candy. Dear Hollywood: When you try turning Go the F–k to Sleep into a sitcom and/or a film franchise, we might take you seriously if Jackson comes along for the ride.
