Is 'Green Lantern' co-star Peter Sarsgaard Hollywood's go-to creepy actor?

Some actors are just creepy. Check that — some actors are brilliant at playing creepy. Take Peter Sarsgaard, who plays the big-brained villain in Green Lantern. He’s built an impressive resume of delicious villains and shady characters in films like Boys Don’t Cry, Flightplan, An Education, and Knight and Day. Even when he’s playing good, like in Garden State, there’s still an element of danger lurking just beneath the surface.

Speaking to the Wall Street Journal, though, Sarsgaard argued that his being typecast as a villain is as much a reflection of his “rank” in the business as anything actually villainous he brings to his characters. READ FULL STORY »

Hugh Jackman in talks for 'Les Miserables,' but who should he play?

Hugh Jackman is in talks to star in Tom Hooper’s cinematic adaptation of the musical Les Misérables, the actor’s rep says, confirming a Variety report. Jackman’s schedule opened up after director Darren Aronofsky stepped away from The Wolverine, and making Les Mis would finally bridge his two worlds. Though he’s won a Tony (for The Boy From Oz) and hosted the award ceremony multiple times, his movies, like the X-Men franchise and Van Helsing, have tended to be grittier action fare. If you don’t count the animated Happy Feet, Les Miserables would be his first movie musical.

What still isn’t certain, however, is the role Jackman is in talks to play. READ FULL STORY »

This Week on Stage: 'Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark' officially opens, officially disappoints

The Tonys, and Book of Mormon’s nine-award haul, may have been the theater talk of Sunday night and Monday morning, but Tuesday was all about Spider-Man. The newly revamped (and very troubled) show opened the evening before to a star-studded crowd (click here for a gallery of the attendees) and, as expected, less than starry reviews.

EW stage editor Thom Geier rates the musical a C+, writing that the retooling “may be an admirable work of revision, but it’s an unsatisfying meal, like one of mom’s end-of-the-week casseroles made of leftovers she couldn’t bear to toss.” READ FULL STORY »

'Phantom of the Opera' sequel, 'Love Never Dies,' well, dies in the U.K.

The London production of Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber’s follow-up to his über successful Phantom of the Opera, will shutter on August 27 after only 18 months, according to Variety. The musical — which takes its main character from a Paris opera house to the Coney Island fairground — opened in March 2010 to mostly scathing reviews (our critic called it “a rehashed parade of pastiches and throbbing crashing chord melodies”) and low sales, but trundled on despite having to close for four days for a quick retooling.

The Broadway incarnation, which was first scheduled to open in November of last year, was delayed until spring of 2011 due to Webber’s struggle with prostate cancer. Months later, it was postponed indefinitely. No word yet on the fate of the $9 million Australian production, which opened on May 28 to better reviews, and is reportedly significantly different than its English sister.

Scottish actress Elaine Smith will portray Boyle in a touring show scheduled to premiere in Newcastle, England on March 23, 2012. “I never thought my life story would end up on the stage, but a lot has happened in two years and it is a very exciting prospect,” Boyle said in a statement. “I hope everyone enjoys the show and I promise there will be a few surprises along the way.”

'So You Think You Can Dance': And the eliminated dancers are...

SYTYCD

Tonight’s episode featured the most boring, derivative GaGa video yet! Keri Hilson performed, and the highest bouncing Russian evah. Oh yeah, and there were eliminations on tap. In the wake of Clarence Clemons’ unexpected stroke and a clear underestimation of how long this particular show would take, the judges demanded an unprecedented nine dance-for-your-life performances. SPOILER: But in the end, one couple had to go… READ FULL STORY »

Kate Winslet is good in every era, but is she better in period pieces or modern day?

Any day with Kate Winslet casting news is a good day. That’s because, whether she’s boarding the doomed Titanic or stepping back in time for Mildred Pierce, the Oscar-winning actress is going to turn out a performance that is brilliant in any era.

I confess, PopWatchers, that Kate Winslet is my all-time favorite actress, so I’m a little biased when it comes to her, but I was beyond thrilled when EW got the exclusive news that she would star in Jason Reitman’s upcoming big screen adaptation of Joyce Maynard’s 2009 novel Labor Day.  READ FULL STORY »

Sure, he’s been recognized by awards big (the Oscars!) and small (the Razzies!). But how refreshing is it to see Danny DeVito recognized as an official TV icon? Rita Wilson named Editor-at-Large of 'Huff/Post 40.' Yes, that Rita Wilson.

Rita Wilson is getting into the website game this August with the launch of  the baby boomer site “Huff/Post 40.” Arianna Huffington announced today that Wilson, a longtime contributor to Harper’s Bazaar, has been named Editor-at-Large and will oversee the vision and direction of the new site. That’s not an honorary title: Wilson named the site, will hire its editor and team, and assign features and videos.

“Issues related to being over forty have always intrigued me,” Wilson says in a press release. “My mom and dad always used to say, ‘life begins at forty.’ The idea that we boomers are somehow supposed to wind things down as we get older has completely escaped me. The Over 40s I have met are some of the most interesting, vibrant, curious, courageous, sexy, energetic people I know. Exploring the minds and hearts of this group of people is exciting. It’s never too late to mix things up, change your life, to get to what you really should be doing — or want to be doing. As Mark Twain said, ‘Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.’ I can’t wait to get started.”

What do you think? She should have no problem getting guest columnists.
