On this day in 1936, a star was born. Over the past 75 years, it seems there have been very few areas in which Kris Kristofferson hasn’t excelled.

Born in Brownsville, Texas, to a major general in the U.S. Air Force father, as a teen, he tore up the field at rugby, football, and track. He graduated from Pomona College a member of Phi Beta Kappa and became a Rhodes Scholar. His travels actually led to his singing career, when he decided to make a go of songwriting while studying at Oxford.

His family ultimately pressured him to give up music to join the military, but it was a fortunate change, because the flight training he received in the military eventually scored him a chance to shock an icon into listening to his songs. As the story goes, Kristofferson (who was working as a janitor for Nashville’s Columbia Studios — street cred!) flew a helicopter into Johnny Cash’s yard and presented the Man in Black with a few of his songs. That kind of moxy makes Kristofferson the icon he has become over the years.  READ FULL STORY »

Jason Segel, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt and Alison Brie are awesome at karaoke, everything

When TMZ posts something called “Jason Segel & John Krasinski — Sex Doll Karaoke”of course I’m going to check it out. Turns out, much to my relief, the charming actors weren’t up to any deviant behavior, rather they simply joined a bride-to-be at her bachelorette party at a bar in Ann Arbor, Michigan over the weekend for a rendition of Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl” with a sex doll. Okay, so it was a little deviant. But adorably so!  READ FULL STORY »

Train launches their own 'Drops of Jupiter' wine. Other business venture ideas for bands!

Train

Had you asked me to come up with a product based on Train’s 2001 smash “Drops of Jupiter,” I likely would have said shampoo. You know, to go in your “haaa-aaaa-iiir.”

But, as it turns out, the members of Train — in addition to writing some seriously baffling, yet undeniably huge hit songs (I still demand an explanation for “Hey, Soul Sister“!) — are something of wine enthusiasts who have launched their own wine club. (I had no idea either, PopWatchers, or believe me I would have joined out of sheer curiosity long ago.) And now, they have just announced they are making “Drops of Jupiter” into a 2009 Petite Sirah. Oh, if only we had talked to Geddy Lee this year! READ FULL STORY »

My first thought after last week’s surprise non-elimination on So You Think You Can Dance was the the bottom seven dancers dodged a major bullet. Maybe I was just in a cranky mood, maybe my snark demon Smirkelstiltskin was just in a fabulous mood, but I was underwhelmed by almost all of their dance-for-your-life solos, especially the ones by the two best known dancers among them: Jordan “I Wanna Be a Pussycat Doll Alternate on the ‘B’ National Tour” Casanova and Robert “I Wanna Be an Electric Company Cast Member Circa 1975″ Taylor Jr. Had I been Nigel, I would’ve sent those two home in a heartbeat.

But, of course, I’m not Nigel — and that’s a good thing, for many reasons, not the least of which is I am nowhere near as diabolical as he is. READ FULL STORY »

Jennifer Lopez: Can 'Idol' make her an A-list movie star again?

In Hollywood, the path to success is rarely a straight line. Case in point: Jennifer Lopez. The once-scorching movie star has starred in only one film that played in over 1,000 theaters (last year’s romantic comedy The Back-Up Plan) in the last six years. But this morning comes the news, first reported by Mike Fleming over at Deadline, that Lopez is close to signing onto two big-budget films: The action thriller Parker with Jason Statham, and the ensemble comedy What to Expect When You’re Expecting.

What’s different about her these days? Well, American Idol, of course. READ FULL STORY »

Jon Stewart rips into Fox News (again) after suffering 'The Daily Show' treatment

In the world of politics and TV journalism, you haven’t truly arrived until Jon Stewart has parsed your public words to find the perfect nugget of hypocrisy or misinformation that can then be transformed into a comical critique. It is a public service, actually, a check on our leaders and the Fourth Estate that keeps press secretaries and television producers awake at night. Last night, Stewart himself got a small taste of The Daily Show treatment. He didn’t seem to like it. READ FULL STORY »

Ricky Gervais' 'Life's Too Short' teaser trailer is, well, too short. But our anticipation is growing!

Yes, yes, we know, it’s a teaser trailer and it’s supposed to be short, but we couldn’t help but to want to see a teeny bit more of Ricky Gervais’ upcoming series Life’s Too Short . Still, what we did get from the preview of the new BBC2 series is that Gervais is teaming up once again with his most excellent right hand man Stephen Merchant, as well as their Extras co-star Shaun Williamson (Barry, occasional BBC star/Car Phone Warehouse employee) and guest star Warwick Davis, who appeared in one of the best episodes of that series as a dwarf who acts opposite Andy Millman (Gervais) only to be — literally — a pushover.

As Gervais explains in the compact clip (sorry, it’s almost impossible not to use words associated with small here!), Life’s Too Short won’t be unlike the aforementioned Extras or his other classic, The Office, in that it’s a “fake documentary … and a backdrop to media.” According to the BBC, the series will center around Davis (Willow, Harry Potter, Star Wars: Return of the Jedi) who plays “a fictional version of himself” (re: “desperate, conniving, fame-hungry”) who runs a talent agency called, Dwarves For Hire. In the tradition of Gervais’ inspired/awkward/hilarious series, we have a feeling Life’s Too Short will stack up just fine. READ FULL STORY »

Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Lopez, Kate Winslet, and... Vin Diesel (!?) among 2012 Walk of Fame inductees

It’s time to rev up those “2012 is the apocalypse” jokes again: Fast Five star Vin Diesel is getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, before the likes of, say, Bono, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Robert Redford. (We’re chalking Diesel’s inclusion up to his awesome break dancing skills… haven’t seen Bono do this, now have we?!)

But Diesel is just one of the stars in the very eclectic pack just chosen by The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to be inducted to the Walk of Fame in 2012. Oscar-winner Kate Winslet will get her own star thanks to an impressive acting career, as will other Motion Picture inductees Scarlett Johansson, Malcolm McDowell, Sumner Redstone, and Pixar wiz John Lasseter.

Interestingly enough, Jennifer Aniston will also be given a star for her work in movies, but as any Friends fans might argue, the actress is, and always will be, Rachel Green. READ FULL STORY »

Tom Hanks finds his groove on Univision with weather mambo

No, this is not a Saturday Night Live skit. Nor is it an homage to the game-show scene in Lost in Translation. This is simply Tom Hanks promoting his new movie, July 1′s Larry Crowne, by dancing with a Spanish-language weather girl on Univision’s wake-up show, Despierta América.

But that’s not all: He also stayed for the show’s cooking segment and sat for an extensive interview to discuss his new film. But the dancing… Oh, the dancing. If only he’d thrown in a little “Disco, disco, good, good!READ FULL STORY »

Angela Bassett joining Samuel L. Jackson on 'The Mountaintop'

Tagged:

Angela Bassett has signed on to play opposite Samuel L. Jackson in the Martin Luther King, Jr.-inspired play The Mountaintop. Producers Jean Doumanian and Sonia Friedman said in a statement, “These two remarkable actors have excited audiences around the world for many years, and bringing them together in this extraordinary new play on Broadway promises to be a major highlight of the season.”

Making its Broadway debut on October 13 (with performances beginning September 22), the play re-envisions the events of April 3, 1968 — the night before King was assassinated. Bassett’s mysterious hotel maid forces King to face his past and consider his legacy. Written by Katori Hall (Off-Broadway’s Hoodoo Love), the Olivier-winning show will be directed by Kenny Leon (Fences, A Raisin in the Sun).

Golden Globe-winner Bassett was last seen on Broadway in 1988′s Joe Turner’s Come and Gone. Jackson made his debut as an understudy in 1990′s The Piano Lesson.
