Tom Hanks says Pixar is working on 'Toy Story 4'; Should Woody and Buzz make sequels to infinity and beyond?

When a movie grosses more than a billion dollars at the global box-office, you better believe there’s going to be a sequel (or two). So I know I shouldn’t have been surprised when Tom Hanks, currently in England promoting Larry Crowne, let slip that the Toy Story gang was not about to be packed away in the Disney/Pixar attic. “Yeah, I think they’re working on it now,” he answered interviewer Tim Muffett when asked whether fans can expect another helping of Woody and Buzz. Disney didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about any plans for a Toy Story 4, but after seeing them in the short that played before Cars 2, it’s clear these characters are still very much in play.

Yet part of me was chagrined by the prospect of a Toy Story 4. Not because these characters don’t have more stories to tell, but because the ending of Toy Story 3 struck such a chord with people my age and seemed the perfect culmination to the toys’ journey that I worry another sequel might somehow diminish the perfectly-wrapped trilogy — which began with Buzz Lightyear’s introduction into Andy’s world and ended with Andy’s departure for college. Through it all, Pixar’s storytellers seemed to make every right decision. Making another film that launches into a different direction (at Bonnie’s house?) might yield more fantastic adventures, but I’m not sure my Generation X heart will be in it the same way as the first three films.

Of course, studios don’t make animated toy movies for nostalgic thirtysomethings. How would you feel about another round with Woody and the gang?

There should not be a “Toy Story 4.” The third film ended the trilogy perfectly. If it was a prequel than that would be fine, but a sequel NO!

    • Sean

A prequel wouldn’t really work, since it wouldn’t make since without completely writing out one of the main characters (Buzz).

      • David

Not only buzz but Jesse and bullseye as well

      • David

        And the aliens, man

  • Betty

There should not be another “Toy Story.” I was so happy with how the third one ended.

I’m torn! I love the Toy Story gang, and the Toy Story short was my favorite part of Cars 2. But Toy Story 3 was pretty much the perfect film, and was a very fitting end for the series.

I agree completely. I love these characters, but they found such a great high note to end on, I don’t see where they can go from here without being repetitive.
I wish they’d do an Incredibles film instead.

      • JD

Well, yeah, they HAVE to do another Incredibles movie, but I disagree. I’d love to see a Toy Story 4.

      • Samuel

They’re supposedly considering another ‘Incredibles’, which I’ve been waiting for for seven years, just sayin’. Also, another ‘Toy Story’ would ruin it, also, while it was funny, I wish they would go back to doing original shorts in front of Pixar films instead of continuing ‘Toy Story’.

I totally agree on another Incredibles!!
But another Toy Story, no…the 3rd one ended in just the right way. Leave it at that Pixar.

I can understand the reasoning behind wanting to make a fourth one, but I really hope they don’t. The third one ended perfectly.

  • matt

Yeah, I could see a prequel happening, even though Buzz might be excluded. Otherwise it seems extremely unnecessary and just a cash-in.

  • Brian

Please no sequel!! As with Cars 2, we can see that even Pixar can slip up every once and a while when it comes to story telling…Toy Story should not be touched anymore!

  • Ann

I kinda want the story to end with Andy getting graduating college, getting married and having his first son. By that time, Bonnie would be older…and would be ready to give the toys back to Andy’s son, Andy Jr. The end. No more films after that.

The Toy Story films make a great trilogy, I don’t see why anyone would feel the need to add another film to it. Everything feels properly covered and wrapped up.

    • JD

They need to add depth to the new characters!

  • Dominic

They absolutely should not make a Toy Story 4. The trilogy was concluded to perfection, and expanding it would only wreck what is already golden cinema. A fourth movie would only show that Pixar is milking this franchise and not putting any heart into it. Although a Bonnie storyline might be okay, it will never be as good as Andy’s storyline.

  • Rusty Shackleford

No. We already have closure. Like Andy we have moved on

  • vjw

If it’s as funny as the “Hawaii” short for Cars 2, bring it on!

  • David

Buzz and woodsy story felt resolved but mmaaaybe some other set of toys, like the ones left at the daycare. Just a buzz woody gang cameo and that’s it. That may work.

  • Shamus N.

Pixar should just stick to original stories. The only Pixar film I want to see a sequel to is The Incredibles.

    • Cris

      I second that comment …

      • Steve

No kidding. The Incredibles has enormous sequel potential.

    • LOL

      Shamus FTW!

  • Cris

It IS tough … all three Toy Stories were so wonderful … but the third movie really gave a sense of closure (also, I’m not sure I can handle another sobfest like I had at the end of TS3)

  • travus

its not toy story 4 its a string of short films called toy story toons the first one played in front of cars 2 its called Hawaiian Vacation its really funny
