'Survivor's' Jeff Probst to head to daytime, but what kind of host should he be?

Jeff Probst has quickly become the Law & Order of television hosts, in that he’ll now be on television at any given moment. It was announced today that Probst, who has won three Emmys for his work as host on Survivor, will now head to daytime television and put his hosting skills to use for a new talk show in 2012. As EW’s Dalton Ross reported, “The new show will cover everything from newsmakers to ordinary families in extraordinary circumstances.”

So, since it sounds like Probst’s show will be on par with most other daytime talk shows (unless of course, he stars asking people about their colons, like that meddling Dr. Oz) we’re wondering what kind of talk host should he be? Should he impart his own brand of wisdom like Dr. Phil (with the same Southern accent, if possible) or let the guests do most of the talking instead (unlike, say, the ladies of The View)?

While Probst probably won’t fill the Oprah Winfrey void (although, perhaps Probst could still introduce all of his guests like thiiiiii-iiiiiis) he does have the all around-likable guy appeal on his side. Maybe his best bet is to aim to be like the Jimmy Fallon of daytime television and just shoot for a laid-back, young approach at an old medium.

Or maybe he should just surprise everyone and pull a Maury Povich and have a show in which his guests have to guess who the father is and if they guess wrong, they are voted off the island…of life.

But tell me, PopWatchers, what kind of host do you think Jeff Probst will, and should, be?

Or he could just be himself. That’s why everyone loved him on Regis & Kelly. Why does he have to be like everyone else? Lame.

Good for Jeff. Can’t Wait! But come on, EW, don’t you guys ever re-read or do a spellcheck before placing articles on-line. I love you guys and have every issue still from 1992 but spelling errors are constantly being made which makes EW look incompetent.

I’m hoping SURVIVOR will come to an end next year because the reality competiton series STILL getting old and CBS has the rights to prove it.

Man, I was hoping you’d announce Probst as the replacement for Regis, if and when he finally goes.

I think he can take it further than co–hosting with Kelly
He needs to be the friendly guy who will call you on your crap as well. Not in a harsh cruel way but like a direct, keeping it real approach.

Bean, it might still happen as he’d be a solid choice for that show and liven things up with that annoying Kelly Rippa. But still thinking she has her way, ti will be her husband in that seat.

I’m just hoping that he’s who he is in Survivor. He already does great at Tribal Councils and at Live Reunions.

Oh, and I’m hoping he continues to do Survivor as well, although I’m guessing that it’s a given he will since he is quite involved in running and developing the show now at this point.

The headline sounded like “Survivor” would be a daily game during the daytime.

Looks like he’s done with Survivor then. Hopefully he won’t be a good host and goes back to the show when it gets canceled.

I also want him to be the guy who highlights people in the world who are doing amazing things – like those he tried to show us in his short-lived documentary show. Go For IT!!

  • dee

So which soap will make way for him then?

  • orville

Well, he did spend some time as an interviewer on Access Hollywood, so it could go the celebrity route. And he did host a gameshow, so it could go that way.

Here’s the deal, Survivor still has its original fans, but atracting new ones is the key. Jeff can PR form the daytime spot and gain a few. Here’s the key though… you knowm me Jeff (maybe), bring me in to put a new spark on Survivor; it’s far from dead but could definitely use a guy like me to bring in some new fans.
